I had a Genesis, was pretty tight, had plenty games like Power Rangers(and the Movie), all the Sonics, Battletoads(and Double Dragon), X-men, Mortal Kombat 1 and 3, plus plenty of more that I can't remember right now, I think I had roughly around 30 games or so.

Had a Gamegear also but the batteries sucked balls on it, like 6 of them lasted like 5 or so hours, what a rip, I still enjoyed playing Power Rangers on the go though.

It's not really an age-related question though. I am almost 40, been gaming since the Atari 2600, and I never owned any Sega console.

The SNES outsold the Genesis by a lot. It's not surprising that a lot of gamers owned only a SNES.

The Dreamcast sold so poorly that it put Sega out of the hardware business. It is therefore even less surprising that few people owned a Dreamcast.

@rogerskg1979
That's actually kind of sad since it was the first 128-bit console. I don't buy based on how well a company is doing and I don't buy based on what my friends are doing. They all switched to Sony because of the Xbox RRoD and PS online was free and then Sony screwed them, and I laughed and laughed. Never understand someone who makes a purchase based on a trend.

Yeah. But its also more likely that the reason the younger gamers havent played it due to their age... where older players had other reasons like money or not wanting the system.

The first console I owned was a PS1, and I got it as a gift in 2002(I think?) Christmas.

Doesn't mean I never played on other consoles earlier than that tho. Just had to work really hard to convince my parents to buy one, so I had to be really selective about which one I wanted. And as you might have figured out, the newest generation machines were out of the affordable price range at the time.

I was going to say...

I guess I was fortunate. My mom was broke but I always go great consoles and games. She bought me an N64 and the gold OoT and the platinum GC that also came with the better copy of OoT released on that console. I'm pretty sure over the years I've owned most of the major consoles. It still surprises me that Sega had more of a cult following to it.

I still have in my collection of legacy gear (all purchased new at the time):

-Sega Master System (two actually, one bought used)

-Genesis console (original "three-chip" model, plus the 8-bit power base converter)

-Sega CD and Mega CD units (both modified to play both OS's

-Sega 32X (what a turd of a device however, only have a few games for it)

-Saturn (easily the least-played of all my Sega consoles)

-Dreamcast (first 128-bit system made, first also with progressive-scan 480p output I believe)

I also have a Game Gear that I was given (essentially a portable SMS).

I have been gaming since 1975 (first console was an Atari Super-Pong)

I actually have a few good games for the SMS. I mostly preferred RPGs, especially back in the day, so I bought games like Phantasy Star & Spellcaster for the SMS. When I bought the Genesis console I also bought the 8-bit converter, so I didn't have to leave the SMS connected to my monitor.

Sega has always had some quirky things with their consoles. The SMS (and the genesis converter) had the pause button located on the console for some crazy reason. The Genesis only provided stereo audio out a headphone jack(!!) In connecting the Sega/Mega CD systems, this headphone jack had to be connected to a mixing port on the back of the CD unit. Crazy! And don't get me started with the 32X, anyone who had the misfortune to purchase one knows what a nightmare to connect it up was (I called it the "potato"). At least the Saturn was a more conventional console, though it was rather limited in games I liked (Shining the Holy Ark & Panzer Dragoon Saga, though I have a lot more than just those). The Dreamcast- easily the best-looking game system by far (on my high-resolution system) until the first XBox came out. (Even the PlayStation 2 did not have progressive-scan output for games for some reason). The Dreamcast's VMU units were cool, and it was the first console to have DLC for any game that I know of (Skies of Arcadia, had to use the web browser to download the patches onto a VMU, still have those files!)

All that, and more, all the while I was playing the other systems as well. Sega was certainly a big part of my personal gaming past.

Lol. That's quite the reason.

Jk. This guy at work a long time ago was using a flathead screwdriver, that was bent halfway to Hell, like a 45 angle or more. I said "That thing is broken as fuck." And he goes to hold it up, pointing at the curve with his entire hand, and as he does and says "What's wrong with that?" a huge chunk of the handle that had become brittle with age broke off and it basically fell to pieces. Top ten funny moments. So now you know the background on that line if you ever see me use it. 100% sarcasm. And to this day I can't tell if he too was being sarcastic while saying it.
