Say you're forced to evacuate in the middle of the night due to a fire sweeping through your neighborhood and can't go back until after the fire is gone. Or a tornado rips through your home. Flood. Hurricane. Horde of pissed-off spiders, termites, and carpenter ants. You lose everything except what you could carry out the door.

Would you be prepared and be able to replace everything via insurance, or would you have to figure out what you lost and then battle it out with your insurance agent?

It's not too late to start a list of what you have and would need replacement. Exact descriptions, model numbers, serial numbers, receipts, pictures, etc.

Normally when that happens in Australia it's more likely that people steal stuff then it gets flat out destroyed. :/

That said, no... I know I probably should since sumner is approaching and all... But I don't know...

I'm fully insured... but I'd not be able to replace anything. I don't keep much, but the little I do keep is artwork and stuff. Even if I got a full or even extra payout from insurance I would be empty inside for a long time.

I've been slowly uploading photos to my Google Drive in the event my hard drive dies on me, or worse, house catches on fire, earthquake collapses it, etc. I should scan old photos and upload them as well as a precaution.

Not everyone has insurance. But either way yes and no. Physically no mentally yes. Moved in with my best friend once and promptly had everything but my clothes stolen while we where out one day. It sucked but I got used to it rather fast. No video games no cell phone no Internet. We had tv but only like 3 channels and they sucked we just turned it on for background noise whenever we would clean the house. Usually bob Ross painting something.

Also thanks to Florence in recent history went a week without power so I had zero form of entertainment and I did just fine then.

No, for the most part. I do have my mtg cards in a digital collection though. Wonder if an insurance company would accept that as proof.

I would genuinely welcome a fresh start like that. Not saying that I'm wishing for that to happen, but I would definitely make the most of it.

I don't live in a place where a fire would ever "sweep through my neighborhood".

As for possessions, I have nothing that I couldn't afford to loose and plenty of money to replace anything I would loose. Assuming I can grab my wallet and phone I'm probably fine.

Nope not prepared, and we DID have a fire sweep through our neighborhood. Thanks to the firefighters and my dad, our house is still standing. I don't think anyone lost their houses in that fire, unlike the more recent ones. (Ours was July of this year.)

Just keep in kind that your insurance company will likely try to lowball everything. You put in a claim for a damaged toaster - youre getting a $3 toaster from Target. Claim for a gaming computer - youre getting a gaming computer from Walmart.

I haven't valuated my belongings, that's for sure. I'm sure I could live with it, though. Most of the stuff I own is replaceable and not that important. The big thing I'd be worried about is my hard drive but I do intend to make a backup of that (well, not the whole thing, but unique files like photos). At least if I had to evacuate, that is easy to take (assuming some advanced notice) and worst comes to worst I'd have it stored in a fire/waterproof safe and hope it survives.

Not exactly, at least not with my renters insurance.

Everything is insured to be replaced (so no depreciation of value).

So if my LG 4k smart tv currently costs $2000 to replace, that is what they give me.

My 42 inch sony 1089 p TV currently costs about $500, that is what I would get for it.

My Playstation pro and PSVR would both be replaced etc.

Long as you have the items well documented/photos etc, your pretty safe. You might not get everything back exactly, but the big value items will be replaced (or actually you get the cash value to replace them).

This actually means you could probably upgrade in some cases, or find a deal etc.

Like my laptop for instance, to replace it would still cost about $1000 or so....but...I could probably get a better laptop on sale.....for about the same price.
