I just finished SMB2 and was shocked to love it as much as I did. Ranked it a 5/5 on Grouvee, in fact.

Curious to see how people rank the games in the series as I make my way into SMB3.

Been a long long time since I played some, but probably

Galaxy > Galaxy 2 > 64 > World > 3 > 1 for what I remember enough. I played the one 3DS one too, but I dont care enough to rank it.

Galaxy 2 > Galaxy 1 > 3 > World > Odyssey >> 64 > Yoshi's Island > 1 > 2 > Sunshine

Something like that, maybe? There's definitely a big dropoff after Odyssey for me though.

Of the ones I've played:

SMB3 > SM64 > NSMBWii > NSMB2 > SMW2 > SML2 > SMS > SM3DL > SMW > SMB > SML > SMG > NSMB > SMG2

Dropoffs are bigger near the bottom of the list. Honestly, even though it's third from the bottom, Galaxy 1 is way ahead of Galaxy 2.

From what I've played enough of to fairly judge. The first three are all-timers, the next four are still great, and all except the original NSMB are at least good, in my opinion.

Outstanding: 2 ~= 3 ~= 3D World
Excellent: 1 ~= Galaxy ~= New ~= New Wii ~= New U [the latter two might drop a tier if we ignore their excellent multiplayer]
Good: World ~= World 2 ~= Galaxy 2 ~= 3D Land
Okay: 64 ~= NSMB2 ~= Odyssey
Less than okay: GameBoy games and Lost Levels

Haven't played Sunshine. Still.. don't have much desire to fix that, after Odyssey convinced me I just don't like the SM64 style of games much (Galaxy feels different in several key ways).

I embarrassingly have yet to play Mario Sunshine, or Galaxy 1 or 2. Not too interested in playing the NSMB Wii or Wii U games more than the hour or so I already have. Not especially interesting or challenging, and the DS version seemed like the best one in that style.

Even though it shows its age at times (mostly later in the game), 64 is one of my top 5 games of all time. That being said, Sunshine actually improves on it in a number of ways so it sucks that Sunshine has so much dumb crap in it that prevents it from actually being better. Been too long since I played much of any other Mario game.

You could argue that 64 and SMB both invented entirely new genres... Or at least established the tropes that last through today.

Yeah neither one invented their genre. There were sidescrolling platformers before SMB (Pitfall), and a few 3D platformers before SM64 (Jumping Flash).

But both Mario games DEFINED the genre forever after. Miyamoto nailed it immediately

That's what I meant. You almost would call Pitfall an "action platformer" now instead of a basic 2D platformer because Mario superannuated it so thoroughly.
