Uh, the toy industry is more than just one retailer... and TRU more or less collapsed because people were buying from those other retailers.

I had to google that slang and I was shocked (but not too shocked) and offended (but not too offended) to learn it was an insult! More importantly, you say that you're talking about more than one retailer but you're literally just highlighting one retailer who lost out to other retailers.

I thought it was more of a financial debacle from a buyout long ago that they could never overcome becasue of interest.

^ That's what I've read. It was basically impossible for them to survive because of how the buyout was structured.

They're still alive and well in Canada. They broke off from Toys R Us in the States so they wouldn't get dragged down as well.

Gonna suck because this will be the first BF without it. Usually stopped there for at least one or two good deals. Got my GXTV, PS1, Wii, and Wii U at that same TrU.

I remember when I was a kid, my mom use to go there on BF to get stuff for Christmas all the time. I do remember them having some pretty good deals at one point...

Actually, their downfall was the likes of KKR and Bain Capital loading them with massive debt.

Something like that. Basically the CEO leveraged the whole company and sunk it.

It was only overpriced if you didn't do your research. No more markup than other places would do. I'd wander in for their B2G1's on video or board games.

Growing up it was literally the only store that sold video games in my area until around 91 or 92 when Ho Rc Hobbies decided to slowly become a used game retailer. Even then, they were about 20 miles from my house while Toys R' Us was about 10 miles.

Granted, that nostalgia kind of died stepping into one about 3 years ago, but it was still where I got all of my video games for the first 5 years of my video gaming career.

Nope. They had some debt and then had a leveraged buyout in the 2000's take them from a public company to a private company saddling them with debt more than the company was worth (Fuck Mitt Romney). If you don't consider the leveraged buyout debt the company was profitable but they couldn't handle the absurd debt payments. There were other fiascos like messing up an online retailer deal and falling behind, but the debt made it hard to invest in big changes and keep up.

But toys r us is still around. I don't know how but after selling all the stores and fucking over all their employees they seem to have somehow canceled selling off the brands and rebranded as "Geoffreys Toy Box" I believe.

https://www.supermarketnews.com/nonfood-pharmacy/kroger-revive-toys-r-us-holidays

I'm going to speak bluntly and say I don't understand how this is legal. They haven't given us our severance, they cleared their debt, and they maintain their brands. I'm going to hate this new version of Toys R Us for as long as it exists probably because the people in charge of it belong in prison. I'm even hearing rumors Toys R Us is going to start opening up small stores in malls and stuff next year.

Chapter 11 bankruptcy. Basically the closing of all of it's stores in the US and UK (as well as selling off the ones in Canada and the rest of Europe) was the condition by which it was allowed to exist. Chapter 11 is how you avoid having to sell off everything to get out of debt (Chapter 7 being the "liquidate everything" bankruptcy).

Not too hard to miss.

I can't remember the last time that I went into a Toys R Us looking for something and walked out with that exact thing. I've had better luck at those shitty K-Marts.

Actually Toys R Us Canada broke away from the American ownership early on in the bankruptcy process, this was still back when it was thought there was no way the American company was going to survive in any form.

They didn't sell everything off though. They canceled the auction right after the stores all closed.

What was supposed to happen was a full auction of the brands held by the company.

That is absolutely crazy, since employee payments are supposed to be at the top of the queue when it comes to debt.
