Well, it's a sure thing Bayonetta wasn't created as eye candy. Eye candy was added because it sells, but care was definitely taken to present said eye candy in a way that didn't make her seem particularly cheapened by it. Enough care that it shouldn't really feel exploitative unless you're just trying to pick a fight.

The issue with female characters(like Bayonetta) being mega strong is that... it just comes across as feeling fake in media(all forms, tv, movies, video games, shows) when they have women being ridiculously op PHYSICALLY. Taking out 10, 20, 50 men who are bigger than her np.

Like... in the real world women are physically weaker, it's just biology. Nothing wrong with that.

So when you see Bayonetta taking out like 20 guys no problem in her games... a lot of the male(and probably even female) audience will roll their eyes because it does not match the real world. They know that the video game/movie is SUPPOSED to be a fantasy, but when you bend the rules of reality too far it becomes hard to stay invested/interested. Things are just happening because they can.

It is hard to make good female characters in games I grant you that, and Bayonetta IS cool, so props to them...

This is a really good point. If Bayonetta was a man no one would've questioned taking out 50 demons with seductive dancing and guns attached to feet.

I think another problem with female protagonist-led games in the 2010s is that they're not allowed to express their interest in guys. In the video suggested by @Logience, Kratos(God of War) kills the baddie AND THEN has sex with 2 hot women.

Consider if the genders were reversed. If the same scene happened in Bayonetta, where she takes out the baddie then proceeds to have sex with 2 MEN, and loved it, it would be deemed inappropriate. Maybe she does have a sex scene with 2 men in the game, but I am not sure on that detail.

Another example, Lightning(Final Fantasy 13). She's seen often hitting Snow Villers, berating him. They make every effort to try to say that she has little to no interest in men sexually. There are scenes where she shows some vulnerability, like when interacting with Hope(a child). But, with regards to her love interest, it is left up in the air as to whether or not she is in to men.

Wow these are some epic questions. Really proud of you. I remember thinking critically about those same issues with women in media for over 15 years (I'm an oldie :P). One time in those years I actually asked a woman about it and she said the answer was simple: what if women are also just people? I slapped her for speaking down to me and moved on with my life. But a few years later some dude in a youtube comment said the same thing and it actually made a lot of sense.

It sounds really dumb and simple but it does answer all these weird things about women in media (and strangely enough, real life also). Women are just people. Crazy.
