I don't sympathize with the kid at all, but the teacher should know how to handle himself like a professional. It's embarrassing when you see teachers fight kids.

My mom was at a school where they had 11 teachers call off on a single day and a $20,000 raise wasn't enough to keep them around for the next year, and they didn't have this issue. Even one of the security guards who got a concussion because one of the kids smashed his head against the ground, didn't conduct himself like this.

the response should have been calling security, but i guess he decided it was worth his career to deliver a swift and much needed ass beating. hopefully when that kids face/head starts to welt up tonight and the pain actually starts to set in, he takes a moment to reconsider if he wants to be that sort of hateful, disrespectful little puke or not.

as for the teacher well... hope hes able to find a new line of work.

If the teacher had punched him the second after getting hit by the basketball Id understand a knee jerk reaction to defend himself but instead he waited a significant length of time afterwards to throw the first punch. The video is clipped so we can surmise that there is even more time in between than what was shown us.

Theres reasonable self defense and then theres letting your pride get the best of you and he clearly went with the latter.

Anyways, plenty of blame to go around on this one.

Kid shouldn't have beaked off (though teens do that all the time), definitely should not have thrown a basketball at the guy. The teacher should have had enough self control not to escalate and absolutely should not have thrown the first punch - that part's simply inexcusable.

From a pure legal standpoint, the teacher definitely committed assault, and you could make a pretty good case for bringing the kid up on charges too for throwing the basketball. I'd probably split the blame 60/40 with the greater share going to the teacher. Kids can be infuriating little shits at times, but if you're an adult you absolutely have to have enough self control not to haul off and punch one of them, especially if you're an educator or other caregiver.

Serves the kid right. I grew up in a terrible area but surprisingly I had some of the nicest teachers ever. Unfortunately, a lot of my shithead classmates treated them like garbage all year long, constantly provoking and harassing them, calling them names, etc. I would've loved to see my teachers body slam them through a table or something. I know it's not right whatsoever, but I'm tired of spoiled, arrogant brats thinking they can get away with everything, as well as the parents that enable that type of behavior.

I know that we don't have 100% of the details here and that there are definitely student-teacher conflicts where the teacher is in the wrong, but generally teachers don't go around picking fights with their students so it's hard for me to sympathize with the student here.

It's hard to tell what happened between the student throwing the basketball and the teacher throwing that punch. Whether the student did anything else in the interim, and how long apart the two actions were. Because the video is cut terribly. So it really depends on how it all pieces together.

I don't agree w/ the idea that it's the faculty's job to be a punching bag in general, though. If a student assaults them, I have no problem with the teacher or janitor (in one poster's story above) hitting back, self-defense or not.
So I'm inclined to side w/ the teacher, but it's hard to make a judgment call based on that edited video.
