We have this extremely stupid cat. Who, for the first 8-9 years of his life, knew how how to use the litter box but has recently just started peeing on the ground outside his litter box, and im not sure how to fix it and cleaning up pee daily isn't something im trying to keep doing

Take him to the vet cus that's a way cats tell their owners that something's the matter.

If you have multiple cats then also get another litter box in a different room cus it could also be a territory thing.

sounds more like a litterbox problem than a cat medical problem.

if it was a medical problem they would be going in other places too. they are going right next to where they are supposed to go.

try and do it like when you train a cat to use one. place them in there, place them in there when they start to go, etc

So what kinda problem could it be if it's not medical? Because he just pisses right outside the litter box but shits in it, so I assumed it was possibly medical but idk

well if it was a urinary problem then he would probably go in other places as well. it's still a possibility, but it doesn't seem likely.

maybe he has gone in other places but you haven't found it?

Make sure you clean that litterbox constantly. Often, cats that refuse to litterbox due so because their owners fail to clean it to their standards. If you are keeping that thing spotless and the cat is still going outside, take it to a vet... unless it is a male who is just spraying.

One of my cats started going right beside the box for a few weeks before starting in other places. Just a thought, but still more than likely something's the matter whether w/ health or just disliking something.

Spraying is an entirely separate behaviour from urination. Cats don't start to spray in their old age. They do often start soiling outside of the box when they have health issues

My cat who's outdoor/indoor (well, he doesn't ever leave my yard but is free to go outside whenever) will occasionally do his business in dry dirt. I also have sand where a fire pit used to be and he'll go there if the dirt in the garden is wet

If he is, though, that can lead to arthritis that makes bending over to pee difficult as he gets older. Switching to a larger, open litterbox can help with that.

Really, though, take him to a vet. Whatever speculation we can come up with here isn't going to help with the problem.

Unless it's for medical reasons and/or they are really young I see no reason to keep a cat indoor and actually believe it's going against their very nature. What next? Are you going to try and domesticate a lion? Actually don't answer that as I suppose some fool probably has.

People have done that. Also, some cats actually don't like to be outside. And some will go outside, but like to come back in. And just because they can take care of themselves doesn't mean things won't happen to them. Sometimes, people just do their best to hurt or kill animals. Shooting them can hurt pretty bad. And they still get run over sometimes. And wild or domesticated animals can still kill them. I'm not saying to have to domesticate all cats, nor do I think we should catch them all(Stray cats are fine). But I don't see the problem with domesticated them or keeping them inside. Especially when the weather gets bad...

True that. I mean keeping them indoors can lead to many things happening to them. Probably much more bad things than being outside if I'm honest. This reminds me of a mother who will never let their baby out of their sight no matter how old they are so wrap them up in cotton wool ultimately suffocating them.

... because they are cats that's why. Cats don't need babysitting because of worried "parents". Unless of course it's for medical reasons. It's really quite sad how some folk love to lock their animals indoors when their natural habitat isn't indoors.

Birds have their feathers pulled and are kept in cages unable to fly. That's far worse than an indoor cat. Or you want to talk unnatural cruelty, look at animal agriculture.

There are several cat breeds that cannot live outside and should never be outside.

Every outdoor access cat my family has had ultimately met some very nasty premature death that was completely avoidable. Not to mention all the animals the cats themselves killed. Song birds are dying in droves care of outdoor cats.

It's not the same in the UK where cats have few risks. It's flat out illegal to let your cats out in many municipalities here.

Interesting. Well I stand corrected that all cats should be outdoors in that case unless for medical reasons of course. I admit I don't know every cat breed in the world. I was just talking in general terms.

Suppose so. This doesn't mean I still don't stand by what I said but yeah some places in the world are certainly more high risk for any animals and even humans for that matter.

Usually on a leash is ok

I took my cats outside on harnesses and leashes this summer, quite a few times. They liked it. However, one of my cats ate some grass that had been sprayed. He became fatally ill. He would have died a horrible death without the quick medical intervention and care. I had to syringe feed my poor sickly cat every other hour for days to prevent his organs from shutting down. Because of something outside that was impossible for me or the cat to see. The vet was amazed he pulled through.

My cats now stay inside, until I can move somewhere and make them a catio.
