The winner of the 1.54 record billion lottery win in Mega Millions is from a RURAL town of only 18,000 people in South Carolina as locals swarmed the local convenience store owned by CJ Patel who was given 50,000 bonus for selling the winning ticket as he plans to share it with his employees.

Patel said he had no idea who bought the winning ticket on Tuesdays draw but said a steady stream of people came by the store as he hopes more people will keep coming in.

He's owned the KC Martin in Simponsville for more than 3 years and up until now, the biggest winner had been a 250,000 ticket about a year ago.

The Lottery Corporation knows when and where the ticket is bought but won't know who bought it until the winner comes forward..and we may NEVER know who won the ticket because of privacy laws in the state that allows the winner to be ANONYMOUS..

Cooper says they will owe the state 80 million in taxes if the full prize is paid out in annual installments, about 1% of their annual budget

The store is a lonely rural junction outside of Greenville in the northwest part of the state and it was mobbed by the media and locals who have now struck the banner "Luck Struck Here"

Patel said he can't offer clues as to who may have bought it but given the population is very small, the winner can't be that anonymous when locals pretty much KNOW EVERYONE and will notice changes in their habits once they claim the massive prize.

They have 5 MONTHS to claim the prize which will equal to 877.7 million in lump sum

Had no one won this jackpot, the prize would have risen to 2 BILLION.

Do you think winners should be allowed to be anonymous?

Yes, the winner should definitely be able to remain anonymous if he/she chooses. If I won, I would not want anyone to know. There are too many crazy people out there who will try to get a piece of the prize. I remember one story where a lottery winner's own brother hired a hitman to kill him so that the brother could inherit the winnings. WTF.

The potential bad outweighs the potential good in releasing the name of the winner.

Hell yes.
Nothing says "come and rob / kidnap/ kill me" more than winning tons of money and everyone knowing who you are and where you live.

imagine thinking something with over a thousand million dollars involved is legit

theres some kind of conspiracy involved by default just based on the amount of money involved. No agency is just gonna stack up 900 million bucks and hand it to one dude unabated. Not a chance. I lmao just imagining it.

If I had to guess I would say some very powerful people are in contact with you immediately if you win, and they dictate where your money will go if you value your wife, your parents, siblings, etc lives, but im straight guessing

Hell yea, main reason I don't play the lottery. I would rather not win millions of dollars if I have to have a giant sign over my head that says "New millionaire here!!!"

Anonymity should be protected.

Think about it.... you're worrying that a LOTTO might scam people...

If I ever won something like this, I'd hope my name would be kept anonymous, lest I immediately become one of the biggest targets for burglars in the entire country.

Yeah, Ducky hasn't really seen much of the world. It's 18k people in an 8k area, meaning that the population density is 2k/sq mi.

Zangulus posted...
Yes. Simply because you live in a rural area that has a very low population density doesnt mean areas with larger cities in them cant be in rural areas.

What? Even once you start to get over 500/sq mi, a town doesn't seem very rural. And, if we're talking relativity here, keep in mind that there are places with 45/sq mi. For comparison, Simpsonville has roughly a third of the population density of White Plains, which is very clearly a city.

There are entire organized crime groups that purposely hunt down people that win the lottery with the intent of blackmailing and extorting the majority of their winnings.

It's absolutely insane that people aren't allowed to remain anonymous and if you're worried that a lottery is going to scam people (more than they already legally do), you need to loosen your tinfoil hat.
