No one has ever given me a good reason for treating modern veterans like heroes. Let's see if you can. I'll mention that Vietnam veterans were the last veterans to deserve respect because they were the last ones who did not have a choice in fighting an unnecessary war.

And pretty much the whole reason we don't have a draft now is because of the voluntary service. So if you want to figure out what to thank a veteran for, you can thank them for serving because it means not having to drag your cowardly ass to war.

You realize only about 25% of the fighting forces in Vietnam were drafted, right?

I've been thinking this too lately. I mean is every first-world country like this about their armed forces or just the US? I think we go way too crazy with it. Tons of people who serve in the military are awful people. Plenty are also not, but it's treated like a sacred cow that you can't criticize.

I think it's at least gotten better in some regard. I remember in the early days of the Iraq War you couldn't get away from "Support the Troops" ribbons and if you didn't support the war everyone thought you hated the troops. Now people have a greater understanding of separating respect for the troops and opposition to the conflicts they're involved in. Though I'm not really sure that's so much a sign of progress as it is just years of people both right and left realizing these engagements in the Middle East have been big failures.

You do realize a lot of them were talked into willingly joining up under the impression that if they enlisted they wouldn't go to Vietnam. Of course it didn't work out that way.

The line of dialogue was something to the effect of:

"If you enlist now we wont send you to Vietnam. But if you get drafted we will. Either way we will get you."

This is of course anecdotal evidence on my part but nearly every Vietnam vet I've known has said something to this effect.

There are other nations where everybody serves so it's less of a thing. Plus most first-world nations aren't as involved as the US when it comes to actually *using* their military so it's service without risk of sacrifice. And keep in mind that the US doesn't have military parades like some other developed nations, so we don't venerate them as much in that regard.... yet.

It's literally the same thing it's been, but your perspective has changed. Although you might be seeing less signage because it's been longer since 9/11 which was a time when the country was a bit more together in terms of overall patriotism.

I'm sure the military has a wide spectrum of people. As a nurse, I can tell you there is a very wide range in terms of knowledge and experience. But you wouldn't be able to tell the difference unless we wore our name tags and you knew the different levels of nursing education with their abbreviations. Even then, someone of lower rank could easily be more capable than someone of higher rank due to their years of experience.
Personally, yeah, I think the military worship in general is a bit overblown. Now the ones actually out there risking their lives? Hell yeah. They deserve the respect.

This.

When people find out I'm a veteran they usually say "Thank you for your service" or even "sacrifice"... I was an engineer, basically a glorified construction worker. Appreciate the sentiment, but personally haven't sacrificed much of anything. Never been in combat. Never done anything remotely heroic. And you know what? Probably 70% of service members are in that category.

There are certainly soldiers who deserve praise and respect, but just like any other job there's plenty of plain, average folks doing boring, menial work.

There's also plenty of assholes and downright criminal pieces of shit in the military. The idea we should be sucking their collective dicks simply for wearing the uniform is stupid.

Mostly just the US and tinpot dictatorships.

You guys have some weird, semi-cultish habits around "patriotism". Like you guys have your flag fucking everywhere, which just looks bizarre. In most countries, you'll find the flag outside government buildings, possibly in sports arenas, and that's about it. Same thing with the national anthem and the pledge of allegiance - you guys do that way more often than everyone else.
