Shoveling snow is way worse, this isn't even a contest. Even if it's only like an inch of snow, the fact that there's snow outside is depressing enough to make the whole thing worse.

You mow a lawn, you think "damn that looks nice". You shovel a sidewalk, you think "fuck it all".

I've maybe shoveled snow one time, but I've put on chains in the snow. Both were horrible. I would gladly mow the lawn before doing most things in the snow

Grass grows every day, so I have to mow on a regular basis (probably bordering on a dozen times a year). Snow only happens every once in a while, so I can go an entire winter without having to do it once. With mowing, I have to mow and weed my entire yard - when it snows, I only have to shovel my sidewalk and driveway.

Factor that in with the fact that I tolerate cold way better than I tolerate heat, and the fact that I have mild grass allergies, and I'd take snow over mowing pretty much every time.

(Unfortunately, I'm an adult and I own my own house, so I have to do both regardless.)

Only if you actually care about your lawn, and actively maintain it in ways above and beyond simply mowing. To have a lawn that actually looks really nice, you're almost certainly fertilizing it and using weed killer as well. And potentially having to water it on a semi-regular basis.

Personally, when I mow my lawn, I basically think "Good, now I won't get a fine for my grass being too high", and when I shovel snow, I think "Good, now people can get in and out of my house without risk of slipping, and I don't have to worry about getting sued if someone slips."

I've never had anything resembling a sense of actual satisfaction from either. If I could, I'd pave every inch of my yard to never have to mow or weed again.

you live with an HoA?
fines for grass height is stupid.

one reason amongst many that i would never live in an HoA. people should not be able to tell you what you can and can't do with your home. (not talking about zoning issues like adding a 2nd story)

If we're talking a small amount of snow, they're probably about even, with mowing the lawn being a bit better just because it's nicer to be outside in warmer weather. There's far, far more range for shoveling snow to get worse, though, plus shoveling is something that has to be done as soon as possible (whereas a lawn can be put off for a day or two if the weather's uncooperative). And, to top it off, shoveling is almost always going to be harder work. I really can't imagine this comparison going any other way than to say that shoveling is worse.

Would rather shovel snow any day of the week. I hate high temperatures and I love the cold. I even had fun with some of the old 5 ft. Snow drifts I had to shovel back when I was a kid.

I enjoy both, plus I'm taking care of a friend's house and lawn while she's out of town. I'm 71, so that might make a difference. I'm retired, so I usually only work a couple of days a week, and I've got time for yard care. And where I live is on the border between temperate and subtropical latitudes so the snow seldom gets very deep.

Suburbs in general. Plenty of places can fine you for it even without an HoA being an issue.

We've actually had at least one topic on this subject here on PotD before.

Basically, my local town justifies it by saying if grass and weeds grow too high they promote insects and can cause other problems, so mowing is pretty much mandatory, and there's a fine for letting grass grow beyond a certain height (I think 3 inches?). Generally, if they notice your grass is too high, they send you a warning and give you 10 days or so to mow it.

My grass grows crazy fast, too. I have to mow at least once every two weeks (if not more) during spring/summer, or I risk getting hit with a warning.

More or less this. Lots more yard than driveway. Also prefer the cooler weather. Then during the summer there's too much 'green' so the blue and white of winter is kinda nice.

I don't have a lot to shovel, since the driveway is gravel, but what I do have is annoying as hell, concrete steps (all the fun of slipping on ice plus falling down stairs!) and a wooden deck with random screws that have come slightly loose and stick up above the wood to catch the shovel blade.

I have a LOT of territory to mow, about 4 or 5 acres total, but I've also got a 60 inch wide Hustler Super Z that can mow at 14 MPH so it only takes a few hours, plus it's kinda fun to drive. (Most push mowers are about 16-22 inches wide and run at 1-3 MPH.)
