Not sure what I'll go for myself beyond Bayonetta 2 and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, but plan to grab Mario Kart 8 and Splatoon since my brother wants to play them. What lesser known games should I keep an eye out for when buying a system? Enough systems are selling online with several games included that I should try for stuff that might be decent.

No, I'm not grabbing a Switch for these games. I'm only getting the WiiU because of the Wii digital transfer cutoff date is in January.

Well, those aren't really obscure games like I wanted, but maybe I'll get some of them.
Smash 4 is a maybe. Got the 3DS version which he likes.
Mario Kart was already intended.
Not a fan of Pikmin when I played a previous game.
Donkey Kong / Mario is maybes.
Mass Effect 3 I already own elsewhere in the complete series. What does WiiU offer over other versions?

I like Game & Wario. It was pretty fun. I've heard good things about The Wonderful 101. NintendoLand was fun, and probably better for multiplayer. Maybe Captain Toad. The Sonis All Star racing transformed was pretty fun. I've heard good things about Lego City Undercover. I had fun with Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE... Maybe some of those. Not sure how obscure they are, though...

Super Mario Maker is amazing.

Some of the levels people make are ridiculously awesome. I really enjoy the puzzle and boss ones. I suck at the advanced platforming levels though.

Good call on Bayonetta 2 and BotW

My other favorites on Wii U:

Xenoblade Chronicles X - The plot's not that great (seems good at first, but...it's not), but the combat is still really fun and the exploration and environments in the open world are possibly the best in any game I've played. Plus you eventually get to pilot a mecha! And a few chapters after that, flying mecha!

Hyrule Warriors - It's exactly what you'd expect...Zelda setting w/ Dynasty Warriors gameplay (which if you're a fan of both....like me....is just awesome!). But even if you're not a DW fan, it's one of the best Warriors games, and each move set (some characters get multiple weapons, Link has like 6) feels very different and unique. The summoning gate and the great fairy were pretty damn original and my personal favorites, though hard to use.
However...since it came out on Wii U, a New 3DS version came out w/ all of the Wii U game's content plus all of its DLC plus more, for less than half the price of buying the game and all said DLC for Wii U. And I think an even more expanded version is coming to Switch, so at this point you may want to wait to get it on one of those consoles.

Nintendo decided to shut down the Wii digital store. The cut off date for adding funds passed several months ago, but you can still have some points sitting around, you can spend them before January. In January, the store itself will be shut down, which includes the ability to move your Wii purchases to a WiiU. Planning to move my own library (5 WiiWare games and 27 VC games) as soon as I pick up a system.

Own the 3DS version. You don't actually need a n3DS, I played on my 2DS before getting a n3DS XL, but it does limit the visible enemies and has a lower frame rate.

I remember seeing a comparison video of new 3DS vs. "old" 3DS and the number of enemies that were on screen was way less, like halved...
Not good in a game where you need 1200+ KOs every battle in a limited amount of time (if there's just plain less enemies at a time) and can only afford to be hit a couple times over the entire battle (if the enemies are still there, just invisible...and thus harder to avoid hits from).
Seemed unplayable to me, so I never bothered getting it for my "3DS Classic"
I was also kind of annoyed that I spent $80 for the game and DLC, just for Legends to come out less than a year later for $40 w/ all of that and more...
Good game, though.

Devil's Third (seriously). It's very cheesy but pretty rare and fun if you're into campy Japanese stuff like No More Heroes or Shadows of the Damned.

The online is gone now, but it had this "chickens" mode that ruled. It was points based. You had chickens all over the map and you would touch them to claim them and they'd follow you around in a line. The more chickens you had, the faster your points went up but the easier you'd be to find. If an opponent shot you to death, they'd get one of your chickens and the rest flew back to their starting points. If he melee killed you, he'd keep two.

As a Wii U and a switch owner, would you rather Nintendo keep releasing games for a system nobody owns, or realize their mistake and come out with system that can actually compete with the ps4 and xb1 and release games on that?

Yep

Except I'm getting the WiiU only to transfer my Wii games while I can. I wasn't in a rush to get WiiU games, which is clear since I asked you guys to tell me there was more than two worth owning. But since I have to upgrade by January, might as well try for a game or two worth playing.

The Switch is something I want even less at this point, between the higher price and paid online. I'd want to see how they might treat stuff I'd want to buy before I even consider buying one. If Pokemon games are blocked from trading without payment, I'd be very unwilling for example. The knowledge that there are games where downloading DLC is behind a paywall is already bad enough.

*nods* I understand where you're coming from, there will be more people who experience MK8 and Splatoon for the first time on Switch, for the small number of Wii U owners thou there still isnt enough to upgrade

Pretty much everything I'd suggest has been covered already. I'll third W101 because it's generally underappreciated, and mention Xenoblade X again because it's a really solid time, but I think everything's been covered.

Actually, on the digital side, I can suggest Fast Racing Neo if you're in the market for something like F-Zero. It's a pretty good time, even if the rubberbanding is some of the worst I've ever seen.

$20 a year isn't bad. Plus, they send you codes for all kinds of stuff, too. Like stuff in the games.

Also, Xenoblade Chronicles X is pretty good. I did like that one very much...

Idk if they are going to do that yet. But they did say more to come. But I guess if you don't play online enough, then it probably wouldn't matter. I play online like a lot. Even more than the other 2 consoles. So it's definitely worth it for me.

I do wonder if now is the time to try and buy a 2nd console, if only for a backup game pad. Once that goes, some Wii U games...especially Xenoblade X...become rather impossible to play. Do 3rd parties even make knockoffs of it? It's the perfect combo of too complex / expensive and too low a console ownership base where I could see 3rd parties not even bothering...

Metroid Prime 4. And that is all.

That is literally all there is. And we still havent even seen any footage of Prime 4.

Nintendo has been an entire generation behind all the other consoles since the N64. And it's quite sad.

**feels a distant rumble....**

**notices particles of sand and dust on the window sill start jumping up and down**

**kitchenware starts rattling....**

Uh oh....

**ground quakes**

**sees an army of Nintendo fanboys on the distant horizon, approaching with much speed and fury**

Oh shit.

The Zelda HD remasters are pretty great if you're into playing Twilight Princess and Wind Waker again. Super Mario 3D World and New Super Mario Bros U are great Mario games. DK Tropical Freeze. I think you can still download VC games? Access to GBA games is pretty great, I'm really enjoying playing through Golden Sun right now...Earthbound too. I kinda love still having my Wii U around, I transferred all my old Wii data onto it years ago, so I have a bunch of great VC games (Zombies Ate My Neighbors, Chrono Trigger, Earthworm Jim).

That being said, I'd really like to get a Switch after I've beat BotW, a few major VC games, and some old Wii games (Xenoblade, Galaxy 2).

You can get all the Zelda , Metriod , Donkey Kong Country+ 64, Mario games and Kirby games. Xenoblade Chronicles x is alright. It gets boring after 30 hours (and that's when you get your mech). I really need to go back and beat it, but I suck at that game.

Oh you need to get NES Remix 1 & 2. that's worth it and nobody talk about it because the physical release was so limited.

I really like Captain Toad on the wii u better than the switch. the second screen is awesome for that game. speaking of which Rayman Legends, Lego city and Fatal Frame are great.

And I actually like star fox zero with all those people that hated it. its a good game once you get the controls down.

I really liked the Fatal Frame game on the Wii U (Maiden of Black Water), but I don't think it got a physical release anywhere outside of Japan. You might have some trouble getting that one, not sure if the Wii U shop is still available.

Actually, looking at it there was a physical version in Australia and Europe, but it was Limited Edition only. It is also called Project Zero: Maiden of Black Water in those territories.

I didn't get tired of Xenoblade X until the post-game stuff. Material farming got tedious, and after a while you think, "what am I even doing this for? I already finished the story." And then you quit. But that's still a solid 100 - 150 hours before you reach that point.

I think maybe the music just got to me. it's so generic and so good and bad at the same time.

The area music is great, and so is the boss themes and tyrant theme. But the general battle music and especially the NLA theme (especially NLA night) are awful, and you hear those for a huge chunk of the play time.
True story: I'd frantically race to a point where I could reset the time of day (or to the bunker, which has its own music that's basically elevator music levels of "nothing special, but tolerable in the background") every time it was getting close to night time in NLA, just to avoid hearing the damn music start up.
I was 75% through the game before I decided to finally do a lengthy (and volume muted) night time session running through NLA to catch up on all the sidequests I had skipped.
