Yes. This is another weird thread of mine. Feel free to ignore it. Or whine about it. Either way: I love you.

So yeah. There's this thing I see all the time, and it's strange. I wonder if there's some kind of evolutionary purpose for it. Help me out. Because I'm puzzled.

You meet someone new. A new friend of a friend. Or a new group. Maybe you decided to join the local adult baseball team. Maybe it's a group project in college. Maybe you just got a new job at some accounting firm. Maybe you got a new roommate in college. Maybe a new kid started at your school. Either way....you currently find yourself surrounded by new people reasonably close to the same age as you....

They might ask what your name is. Ask where you're from. Small talk stuff. Getting-to-know-you-jazz. Real basic communication foreplay.

....But then something really bizarre starts happening. Almost always:

After they've set some real basic grounds for communication with you......what's one of the first thing they start doing?

Sarcastically insulting you.

Oh, it might be subtle as hell at first.....but then it's quite blatant.

Teasing you.

Taunting you.

Pointing out your physical flaws.

Laughing things off.

Have any of you ever experienced this? It's kinda subtle. But sometimes not so subtle at all. It's clearly them just seeing what you are willing to tolerate and what you will not. And if they cross any kind of line that seems to genuinely offend you, what's that infamous line they always say next? "Hah, I was only kidding, bro."

Why do you think so many humans do this? Especially humans under the age of 30.

Is it human's subconscious way of weeding out weaklings in the pack somehow? Is it measuring how passive someone to see how easily they can be manipulated to benefit you somehow? Is it just pure sadism? I've never understood it.

And you probably think I'm just making this shit up right now, or grossly exaggerating it somehow. But now that you are aware of what I'm talking about....keep an eye out for it. Maybe you'll be more tuned into it now and you'll see exactly what I'm talking about. It's everywhere. Fascinates me.

It's almost like people are afraid to be too nice to one another for too long, because kindness is somehow an expression of weakness.

I dunno. Don't mind me. Cocaine.

I actually do believe you are exaggerating. I do understand people "feeling someone new out", but not to the crazy extent you described. It's usually different than that...

Some people just have hate in their hearts. They mask it at first, but can't keep up the act forever. You mentioned love, they'll try to steal that from you in twisted, indirect ways. But love overcomes all, and sometimes the only way to love someone is to hate them.
