Turns out the games are way easier when you have unlimited credits

And people think pay 2 win is bad nowadays

tbh, part of the program with early gaming was that it was built on arcade culture where games were deliberately made pointlessly hard to get people to spend more money.

I really like that lives and continues have generally been replaced by checkpoints because, outside of a few genres, I dislike being punished for losing by having to start all the way back at the beginning of a game when I'm really just having trouble with a later part.

I could get pretty far on a single quarter on the TMNT Arcade back in the day.

NBA Jam would sometimes be $1 per quarter, too. This used to annoy the hell outta me.

We played TMNT and it was way harder than I remembered

For the bosses you had to hit them with a single hit and then dodge or theyd knock you down

Also there was a Sega Spider-Man beat um up there and in that game your health slowly drained as you were playing, even if nothing was damaging you, it was kinda BS

I've been to D&B a number of times although they aren't local.

Same here. Checkpoints let us finish games so I appreciate stepping away from limited continues.

Pins are tough unless you have someone to maintain them. Broken flippers are SO annoying.

Yeah, I've been to a number of unlimited credit places and it really does change the feel of a lot of games.

There's a gamer bar near Atlanta called Battle and Brew, it's pretty nice. They have arcade machines but also several stations with different consoles hooked up to TV's that you can pay a flat rate per hour and switch games or consoles at any point. Also quite a few PCs you can also rent out. And they have little buzzers next to the PCs and consoles so you can call someone over to order a drink or food.

Arcades by themselves usually aren't viable, but arcade bars work because you also get people there to drink.

tbh, I think it's been at least a decade since I saw a pinball machine anywhere. Not sure what the deaf, dumb, and blind kids do with their spare time now.

They are pretty easy to fix without training.

They aren't something D&B have and I only see them at the arcade in town when we go on vacation. Seeing a bank of them is extremely rare for probably just the reason I mentioned before - upkeep. Now I've read about places online that caters to pins, wish I was near one of 'em. There's also this, haven't been there either.

At my old job over 10 years ago in the lunch room we had a NBA Jam Tournament Edition arcade cabinet on free play it was awesome.

Damn, you are living in the wrong town in my city a large chunk of the bars have at least a few pinball machines and any arcade bar that focuses on having a large selection of arcade cabinets has at least 3-5 pinball machines. The main reason arcades don't work anymore is that modern kids don't really identify with arcades, now they can download 1 million games on their phone/tablet or play Switch it's like why go to an arcade to play video games, maybe the arcades that focus on games for prize tickets those do better with kids.

Maybe. I always felt like arcades thrived by offering an experience you can't get at home. Now that consoles have comparable graphics and online play there's less reason to leave the house. Things like pins, larger scale VR, motion simulators, dance machines, this is what arcades need - to provide something consoles can't. Ticket redemption is a nice side feature but the games should be fun while earning them.

I always wanted to have one. This stuff would require a lot of space and a ton of money. Older cabs can be had for a few hundred and aren't terribly difficult to maintain. That's just not enough to attract tons of people unless you're acting like a museum of sorts.

Are the computer custom like having Windows 95 on it for older games?

I'm going to this place today: https://twobitcircus.com

Been there once before. There are new arcade games, escape rooms, virtual reality games and classic arcade games. Plus there is a bar and a "robot bar". It's pretty cool.

Then we have way differences in skill level in the way we overcome difficulty. I can't 1 credit any arcade game but I can beat Double Dragon 3, considered one of the hardest games out there with one life characters. I never got how people who have better skills than me can't even beat that game.
