I've never seen concrete numbers on this, but do you have anything to back up the allegation that accusations against famous people and/or politicians are more likely to be fabrications? Because we have dozens of example - against people in both parties - of politicians being accused of sex crimes where the allegations turned out to be completely true.

Incorrect. The Washington Post was provided the excerpts of the therapist notes that detail the rape accusation. Ford could not remember whether she had provided the notes or just summarized them, but the Post clarified that the notes were turned over.

As for the polygraph, the report detailing it was submitted and accepted by the Republicans (who were asking pointed questions about who paid for it).

To your next point, honestly I don't put much stock in polygraph results because they're not ironclad and they can be fooled by someone who knows what they're doing. That said, the overall point there was that Ford has invited more investigation and oversight, which is not behaviour I would expect out of someone to pass off a lie ("How dare you doubt my story!" would be the liar's expected response).

Sure it would.

Think about it - if I'm lying, I have three options for my story.

1) Put the person I'm accusing and a second person who is not friendly to me in the room. Since I am lying, both of these people will say I am lying, and that makes my story seem less believable and more like a fabrication.

2) Say that I was alone with the person I was accusing. This turns it into a he-said-she-said. I don't have any advantage in believably here, but neither does my accuser.

3) Put the person I'm accusing in the room, plus someone else who I have talked into backing up my story (maybe a friend who I can say walked in as the attack was going on). Now my friend backs up my story and it's two-against-one in my favour. That is a huge blow to the accused's credibility.

If I had a friend who I knew didn't have any problem lying for political gain, I'd go with Option 3, but if that was not the case I'd default to Option 2. There's no way I'd pick Option 1 because it just makes the job of convincing people to believe me that much harder.

Of course it's speculation - the whole case is speculative at this point. No one has proved anything yet and I certainly can't prove beyond all doubt that Kavanaugh is guilty. I'm just annotating what is looking sketchy to me and the reason that I believe it's more likely than not that the allegations have merit.

Fuck, man, if I was innocent and I was accused the way Kavanaugh was being, no one would be screaming louder for an FBI investigation than me. I would want my name cleared as comprehensively and thoroughly as possible and I would invite whatever scrutiny I could, because I know there's nothing for them to find.

If I was guilty, though, I would probably stay pretty quiet about the whole thing, lest something get turned up that torpedoes my alibi.

I believe I read somewhere that they are still friends, but I don't have a source for that.

Point remains, even if I got called about someone I was friends with in high school but have since drifted from, my first reaction would not be refusing to testify, then bolting to go hide somewhere. That's sketchy as fuck. If Kavanaugh's innocent, this certainly doesn't make it look that way.

Point is he - to be extremely generous in the characterization - stretched the truth so much in his characterization of his youth that it's basically fiction.

Do I care that he got drunk underage? No, not at all. That isn't anywhere close to disqualifying in my eye. But, as I already said, him lying about something this menial makes me question his honesty in other areas. If he'd been more open and honest about his youth (which he was when he got a second crack at it during his testimony today) I would be much less likely to doubt his word.

You don't have to put much stock in it because since I wrote that post the third accuser has come forward with her accusations.

Honestly I'm still not sold on hers - they are, by far, the most out there of the three - but she has said that she has additional people who are willing to corroborate her account, so I'm willing to wait and see.

If he's not, then no, this is abhorrent. Kavanaugh, in that case, would have my sympathies. But the Republicans would not because they've spent ten years fucking the judicial confirmation process - which is supposed to be fairly apolitical - into a partisan shitshow. If they lose this nomination and lose the senate in November, it will be just deserts (and no, that doesn't mean what's happening to Kavanaugh is right if he does turn out to be innocent, but I still won't be shedding any tears for the Republicans backing him).

OK... so why are you assuming that Ford is guilty of perjury? Shouldn't she be afforded the same assumption of innocence you're granting Kavanaugh?

Mead is exactly correct - the correct approach to this is not "I will defend Kavanaugh as completely, undeniably innocent until unarguable proof of his guilt emerges"; it is "I will not come to a conclusion on Kavanaugh's guilt, or lack thereof, until I have had a chance to see all available evidence and here all available testimony. I will not prejudge nor presume the outcome."

I didnt watch the whole thing because I mean... well... it was way too long and I have shit going on... but he basically had every aspect of his private life on display for the entire world for several hours over an unproven allegation. In that case it shows he has questionable morals and little respect for ethics and the law, which is sort of important for someone sitting on the Supreme Court.

Moreover, rightly or wrongly, we generally say that people who abuse others should not be in positions of power (the logical argument is "because they could abuse that power and magnify their ability to cause harm", while the emotional argument is "why would you want to reward a scummy human being with a cushy, prestigious, high-paying job?")

2. No questions Dems asked had any significance to the testimony (they didnt even ask him if he did it)

People watch too many movies. Everyone thinks the FBI is this magical organization with all the latest technology and secret gadgets like the Men in Black or some shit, and they can get to the bottom of a case within hours that would take normal law enforcement years.

A vague party that happened 35 years ago where a young woman might have been pushed onto a bed and grinded against.....simply cannot be investigated in any cohesive way.

They are going to interview witnesses (many of whom won't be able to remember shit), and it's all statements that have already been made public.
