I hate quitting from jobs, but I'm moving to a company where I'll be making more money. (going from 72K~ to 80K+)

I gotta call the sup soon, but I don't want to do it...

I just made the call, and he was very chill about it, even though I'm giving only a day's notice. But then again, with how the work is around here, most people just stop showing up to work or quit right before they're supposed to show up to work, so I guess he was thankful about the one day notice.

Now they're offering me the raise I was promised back in June and asking me if I'll stay. Assholes, does someone have to threaten to quit to get paid what they deserve?!

As unfortunate as it is, that's often the most effective way to get a raise. But it's also the dumbest, because you're usually still better off switching companies at that point, as you already know you'll have to basically threaten to quit again to get your next raise.

The amusing stories are the ones where people threaten to leave if they don't get a raise, and are either let go on the spot, or told to go ahead. So always make sure there's a plan in place before you threaten to quit <_<

Kudos on the better position and offer of promotion. If I actually get hired elsewhere the pay more than likely will be better but at the same time I do enjoy the work environment of my current company. Work-life balance actually exist and our work load is enough to keep us busy and growing at a slow rate while not burying us under due dates.

Unfortunately being a relatively small company, I don't know if its something I can safely stay with for 20, 30, or 40 some years. Realistically I would like to land a position in the public sector and work for a city.

I forgot if the article was posted here or somewhere else but it more or less suggest new employees are more than likely to start at a higher pay than a long time veteran of the company even if their experience and work load is about the same.

It bothers me that this is always a goal for people. I'd be lying if I didn't say that included me.

I worked for the public sector on an engineering internship and chatted with the older folks in the office, and most of them said when they took the position, it was a massive paycut compared to what they were making in the private sector. But they took it for the work-life balance, and more importantly, the guaranteed pension.

Nowadays, the public sector has better benefits still, pays just as much (or more), you work less hours, and is all around just a better gig an almost every metric.

Given that the public sector relies on the private sector, there should be some drawbacks to choosing to work for the government. Currently, it's all positives.

Funny you mention all that. I was told about the same in my early days of studying civil engineering, that private tends to have higher pay but more hours while public pays less but better benefit and work-life balance.

About all my friends working in the public sector are making at least $80k or so while still working only about 40 hours a week. Hell, when I applied for an engineer associate position that asked for zero experience, starting pay was $60-80k. Still mad at myself for bombing the interview......

I have friends in the private sector pulling in at least 60+ hours a week. They get paid well still but work-life balance varies so much. One friend in particular at one point was going in at 8am and leaving at 9pm because of a major project.

The few friends who started public and switch over to private did it because I think the work was getting boring for them. That same friend told me her projects with the county were almost about the same and it was getting boring.

I guess that is a downside to the public sector. For the most part, there are less challenges and it can get boring. The amount of coffee breaks people took when I worked there was incredible. 8h shift, 30 minutes for lunch, and probably close to 90 minutes of coffee breaks.

I'm not making that assumption but salary is currently a huge component of self-worth, erroneously.

sounds like when I worked construction, only the amount and length of the breaks was up to the boss. he stopped working so often I eventually told him everytime he quit working i was going to quit working. he'd sometimes bitch but I never got in trouble for it. part of the reason I said that, is I was a newbie to the job field and had zero confidence doing shit on my own without him supervising it. except easy shit like just moving material from point a to b.

we worked roughly 14 hours a day, but i'm betting only about 10 of that we actually worked.
