Realistically I would like to land a position in the public sector and work for a city

It bothers me that this is always a goal for people. I'd be lying if I didn't say that included me.

I worked for the public sector on an engineering internship and chatted with the older folks in the office, and most of them said when they took the position, it was a massive paycut compared to what they were making in the private sector. But they took it for the work-life balance, and more importantly, the guaranteed pension.

Nowadays, the public sector has better benefits still, pays just as much (or more), you work less hours, and is all around just a better gig an almost every metric.

Given that the public sector relies on the private sector, there should be some drawbacks to choosing to work for the government. Currently, it's all positives.
