Majority of the cast in KoF are forgettable compared to other series like Street Fighter and Blaz Blu.

I don't know about that. In fact when you bring in BlazBlue (which really ramps up the anime compared to GG) my BS meter starts acting up. Some of that cast is derivative at times, but they clearly reference anime pop culture. Other designs, like Es, are just kind of creatively bankrupt. I actually like playing the character, but she's a Saber variant in a media environment saturated with Saber clones, oh and she's a big breasted loli emotionless girl who secretly obsesses over sweets. Please just kill me now; GG would never.

Compare that to KOF, with distinct character designs. Most of the KOF members from the original games are still kicking around with like twenty years of gaming history on them. The designs get redone occasionally (like Kyo's jacket from 94, 99, and XI). Sometimes we just touch up the graphics, (Kim's graphic redesign in 02 was excellent, and his XIII is fucking hypnotic). But in the end these are still clearly those cast members from 1994 and if you've been playing KOF from any time prior to XI, you'll clock them at a glance.

Who among the KOF cast is forgettable? The awful "Original Zero" mess in 01, I'll grant. The Kyo clones from 99 were as much about the nostalgia of getting to play 94 Kyo and 98 Kyo alongside their new 99 Kyo as they were their admittedly thin plot, but the connections and fanservice kind of justified it to me. We don't talk about Maximum Impact, it's barely even a KOF game in spirit. And I really can't think of any other examples of major cast flubs, let alone most of the cast not being memorable.

Yeah, this isn't going to go anywhere. Outcry for the depiction of females in Japanese games and anime is pointless. It can be creepy, but it's part of their culture. Western society isn't changing Japan's shit.

From an artistic design standpoint, it's got some pretty memorable rough spots. I don't think any of the new cast members are particularly great, and it's too bad because then KOF XI comes out and we're suddenly back on track with detailed sprites animation cycles (though nothing SF3 level crazy) and characters wearing outfits with a lot of personality. It's like that guy was on vacation for the whole dev cycle or something. And do we want to bring up that four part anime they used to try and advertise the KOF:MI spinoff?

Yeah, it's longevity strategy is trying to unlock the cosmetics in this game, but that will get old really fast. I don't get it though, the gameplay for KoF14 was just fine on its own, why did they think there was a need to change it? The game plays like a mess, I mean at least it's a little more smooth compare to other casual games like Blade Strangers, but still.

It weirds me out how the fetish costume is the "default" and you have to buy their "standard" costume as an extra unlock.

Like, if you want to make it default in the Story Mode, whatever, if it helps the narrative, but leave Versus Mode with the classics so people can play the characters they love how they love them.

Unless, of course, this was not made as a proper SNK fighting game to begin with, which, after watching the Super Best Friends play it, might in fact be the case. >_>

Beyond that, I agree with so many other people in this topic when Oda saying "Theyre not just wearing these costumes because we wanted them to.", he's being super disingenuous. Be honest about making your anime titty game, man.

Its weird that they butchered the gameplay so hard here. Like couldn't they just keep the same gameplay from KoF14 and done other stuff like improve the graphics? It seems to me they put a lot of emphasis on chipping the gameplay and barely don't anything to improve the visuals. What's funnier is that there are other indie fighting games that are going for the "casual" gameplay as well but are a lot more refined like Blade Strangers, Pocket Rumble, and Fantasy Strike and they charge at a cheaper price than this game that barely has any content. There is only 3 costumes for each character, with one of them being their default costume, like what kind of fanservice game is that? It couldn't even do that part right.

Honestly, no. Please explain it to me.

The fanservice in this game is particularly trashy because the characters are depicted as disliking the costumes. You see all of these characters with their tits out, all these jiggle physics and cute accessories and thongs and shit, and they're all embarrassed and humiliated and shit. From a social justice standpoint, that's degrading and just shit fanservice. I personally think it's shit fanservice because if the characters involved aren't into it, it feels really fake and desperate - same reason why I don't like porn where it's just two actors going through the motions, it feels hollow and fake to watch.

Bayonetta gets less flak because while she's presenting in a revealing and oversexualised way, she's clearly down for that. She's doing all of this twisting and grinding and dumb stripper dance moves as she kills demons, she's very outgoing with her innuendos and she isn't afraid to just fuck with people and flirt her ass off. Her default costume is sex appeal because she feels confident rocking sex appeal - there's no scene in either Bayonetta game where her clothes get torn into ribbons and she has to modestly cover herself in embarassment, nor where she's forced into particularly slutty clothes against her will. Maybe something like that happens in Bayonetta 2, I never finished the game so excuse me if I'm wrong on that front, but for the most part Bayonetta is accepted as a fanservice character because she embraces her sex appeal.

Something just feels skeevy about fanservice where the person being objectified is like "n-no, this is so embarrassing! why do I have to wear these clothes?!". The characters aren't real people, so I mean go off about how worrying about the feelings of fictional characters is dumb I guess, but the context in which fanservice is presented is what drives a lot of these arguments. Of course some people still demonise Bayonetta as a character designed to evoke the male gaze, but there's more of an acceptance due to her personality as a character and context in which she's depicted in a sexually appealing light. SNK Heroines' approach to fanservice, in comparison, is cheap, disingenuous and skeezy. Why the characters had to be forced into skimpy clothes by a villain against their will is beyond me, and it's that context that has led to the game drawing heat for its fanservice.
