An interview with the producer of upcoming all-female fighting game SNK Heroines has attempted to shame him for the games skimpy outfits and implied that it does not respect the fictional characters, the western gaming medias soy-based thought patterns as usual being largely incomprehensible to anyone with intact testes.

The writer of the Game Informer article tried to spin the topic in a way to make it seem like SNK are producing the sexist game solely for the cash they suppose that such sassy titles rake in, with the insults running even deeper as the producer is given two questions regarding how women are depicted in video games.

According to Game Informer, the producer (Yasuyuki Oda) was asked if he thinks the game fits in with a modern, more broad gaming culture and is told that backlash is typically directed towards game that use sexuality as a driving force the interviewer very clearly implying the game doesnt fit in with modern gaming culture, which he has assumed consists of games that dont objectify women by putting them in skimpy outfits.

The politically correct portions of the interview:

Interviewer: Culturally, where do you think this game actually fits in with a modern, more broad gaming culture? There has been backlash against games of this type that kind of flirt with sexuality as a driving force. Do you think this game follows in that, do you think it bucks that trend?

Oda: There is exposure of female parts, but we dont feel like its overly sexualized. It is there, but we want to push the cute aspect of things, the elegant-ness of the women, and we feel like we are able to cull the people that would bash this game for there being too much exposure.

Interviewer: Do you feel like that the game, with reference to sexuality, tends to respect the characters? Mai has always been a very sexualized character, but for example Leona hasnt. Shes been a very stoic character, and yet in this game shes wearing a catsuit in a thong. What would you say to a fan who has loved that character for years, but sees this and doesnt jive with what they know of that fighter?

Oda: Theres a reason theyre wearing these costumes. Theyre not just wearing these costumes because we wanted them to. Theres a full story behind it which we cant really go into details about at this moment, but if you play the story I think our fans would better understand why they were put in this situation. We made an effort to make sure the image of our characters will stay the same, even after people play this game.

Yasuyuki Oda pointed out that he intends to not cater to the interests of feminists, though some are skeptical of this claim as NIS America will be publishing the title

they should just say "they're wearing silly outfits because we want them to and want to please our fans with them" instead of giving a weak excuse

everything in the game is a conscious decision by the people making it

But this is the game people have to play now. We're not allowed to have devs making games that pander to people who are attracted to women and just admitting to it. There would be outrage. Protests would lead to petitions. Wal-mart would refuse to stock it.

Basically the same thing as in the 90s when bands would intentionally release censored albums so conservative christians wouldn't get their album banned from stores. Only with feminism.

Yoko Taro actually responded to people complaining that he had over-sexualized his characters by asking the internet to send him a zip of all the porn of her because it was too much work to find it all. The man is a national treasure.

I have no issue with these anime boob games if they want to make them.

But I do think sexualizing characters who aren't usually portrayed that way in a crossover game is a valid criticism.

Also I don't really see where they're demanding them to censor the game. They're questioning their vision of the game. I think that's a totally valid thing for an interviewer to do and it should happen more often instead of the constant brown-nosing that we usually get.

Yeah, reading in a lot of MG forums, most people still publicly say that they deed to Quiet even after the learn the reason for her "revealing" clothing.

Just out right say it, I have more respect for people like the director for Nier Automata (even though I couldn't get into the game, though I will give credit that it's a well made game). Hell I always hate it when a fanservice game purposedly casualize the game, like they're treating people who buy games like these as idiots rather than competent gamers. I tried the demo for this game and it plays like complete garbage. Even games like Blade Strangers or that indie game Fantasy Strike plays better than this garbage. Hell, the graphics still look like something out of a PS3 game, they barely updated the graphics from KoF14.

This is really sad considering KoF14 had such great gameplay.

KOF13 did pretty well. I don't know about KOF14, besides that it ended up being a better game than initially believed. Still, I couldn't get over the new art style and wished they'd just rebalanced the cast of KOF13, added three new characters and called it a day.

I see Heroines, and I get very little of the heart or design personality that makes me love this series. The way they've fleshed out their cast across all these games is probably the reason the franchise has lasted for as long as it has in the face of graphically more impressive and mechanically more immersive and complex titles like the SFZ and SF3.

Well I mean, literally South America is the biggest reason the series is still alive (and the fact that it's the best game, besides Dragon Ball Fighterz, for people who love rush down heavy fighters). Majority of the cast in KoF are forgettable compared to other series like Street Fighter and Blaz Blu. But yeah, the sprites in KoF 13 were great, I think it was a huge mistake making them 3D especially when it doesn't even look that good.

Slight correction, while the South America meme holds tons of merit, KoF makes most of its money in China. They love the hell out of that series more than anyone with the... everything to prove it. As for remembrance, who exactly is getting shafted? I mean, sure, Johnny Dee can't tell the difference between K9999 & Nameless but anyone invested in fighting games only have trouble recalling 13 and 14 characters.

Also, potshot time: She should be offended that the game blows instead of blows. Haha, cheap one.

Like can you see why that reason might not be seen as okay? People are fine with Bayonetta because she owns her sexuality, but these are pre-established characters that are canonically being stripped by a villain and wearing skimpy clothes against their will.

It's also portrayed like a wacky cartoon. Yeah, sure, most things are fucked when you read into it. But the game is clearly trying to be as funny as Gals Fighters was. Its effectiveness is not working when too many seriously question the ethics of it.
