Yes. I didn't vote for him as I wanted Obama to get a second term back in 2012, but yes, I did like John McCain. He loved this country and was passionate about politics. War hero and a hell of a fighter.

John McCain was a warmonger. He participated in lying to get us involved in Iraq. He bombed a civilian light bulb factory while as a soldier, and then in 1999 condoned the bombing of power plants, water systems, hospitals, and other civilian targets in Yugoslavia. He supported the bombing of a major Iraqi water purification system during the first gulf war, which resulted in countless civilian casualties.

He supports unconstitutional infringement on personal liberty. He voted for the patriot act. And the NDAA, which allows for indefinite detention of those suspected of terrorism without ever mandating a trial, is literally named after him.

He was a racist. He regularly referred to the Vietnamese as a 'g' word that gamefaqs won't even let me post until the day he died. He compared Iranians to monkeys. He voted against the establishment of Martin Luther King Jr Day.

He divorced his first wife after she was in a horrific car accident and left her for a girl eighteen years his junior.

But sure, let's call him endearing nicknames like 'maverick' and serve up bullshit platitudes like 'he's a war hero!' and 'he's a fighter and a true American!'

He was a racist, self serving, callous, war hawk politician. No wonder both parties love him, and no wonder the average citizen is ignorant enough to not only not condemn him, but to praise him.

I disagreed with him on a lot (including many things BADoglick mentioned) and he inflicted Sarah Palin upon the nation instead of her remaining Alaska's problem.
I never liked him.

But he did take some principled stands instead of just towing the party line, and was respectful to his adversaries. Which sadly in the modern age....distinguishes him from the rest of his party quite starkly. And his actions as a PoW were truly heroic/altruistic, especially refusing an early release b/c others would be left behind.
So I've also never hated him.

Totally neutral towards him. I think he was a good enough man to deserve a respectful send off, which is not a high bar to clear. Just...don't be a complete monster, like hitler, Stalin, or Edison.

Yeah, that really tarnished him to me in the end. It wasn't the worst thing he's ever done, but just the fact he's barely fighting off cancer thanks to his government-provided healthcare and uses his last bit of strength to...deprive other Americans of healthcare.
Really terrible final act. Usually when someone's facing their end, their last efforts are to do good and leave a positive legacy. What McCain did was just baffling.

He was far too pro-war for me to like.

As far as Republicans go, he seemed like a reasonably rational human being, who believed in right and wrong, and was willing to reach across the aisle and occasionally put country before party.

That said, I think he was extremely misguided in his patriotism and his perceived role of the USA in this world, or how the rest of the world looks at the USA and its actions. He seemed blind for everything the USA has done wrong when it comes to military presence and interference. And on lots of policies, I strongly disagreed with him and his proposed solutions.

I believe that, at heart, he was mostly a good honest man. However, I also feel he was severely misguided/wrong on numerous issues.

Also didn't help that whenever somewhere in the world there was trouble, McCain would be on some news channel proposing the USA should show strength and force and bomb those folks.

Didn't like him back in 2008 and nothing has changed. Typical establishment RINO and he's constantly propped up as a war hero despite being given dozens of passes because of nepotism, ultimately resulting in his capture and the deaths of other POWs. Not to mention he was a tremendous warhawk.

Getting basic facts correct is pretty significant if the buildup is to accusing him of actual war crimes.
