today, Sony CEO Kenichiro Yoshida reportedly told the press that his company generally doesn't believe in the idea of opening up the PlayStation to cross-platform multiplayer.

"On cross-platform, our way of thinking is always that PlayStation is the best place to play. Fortnite, I believe, partnered with PlayStation 4 is the best experience for users, that's our belief," he said, according to The Independent.

"But actually, we already opened some games as cross-platform with PC and some others, so we decide based on what is the best user experience. That is our way of thinking for cross-platform," he reportedly added.

That second quote does make it sound like Sony would be open to cross-play on a case-by-case basis, if Sony believed that cross-play would be the "best user experience." That's something.

They don't wanna for the same reason Microsoft didn't wanna back in the 360 era, because they're on top. Companies are not required to do cross play, but it is pretty shitty when they do something like they did with Fortnite where their account was tied to the console which didn't allow them to play on the other consoles. That's fucking shady.

Earlier this year I was contemplating getting a PS4

Then all this cross platform shit happened and now I've just sworn off Sony for the forseeable future.

I don't play Fortnite. I don't play any cross platform games or at the very least utilize the cross platform features.

I just can't support this total fucking anti-consumerist bullshit Sony has been on since it was clear they won the generation back in 2014. <_<

360 had Final Fantasy XI and a few from the failed Windows Live service.

Portal 2 was the only real exception.

IMO, this is the biggest problem. I'm fine with them not agreeing to crossplay, it's understandable. But ruining people's ability to play a game that someone else made and you have no control of on another console is just pure scum. That's a total dick move.

Yes it was. You could play coop on PC and PS3 together. Not sure if you still can though.

Well given that Sony and ms were the only consoles with real online, there wouldn't be any cross play if ms shut it down. It makes sense for the platform with the highest sales to not allow cross play

What I don't get, ever since this stupid conversation started, is why people are surprised by this? Sony obviously is winning the "console war" this generation. By a lot. Why would they do anything to help Microsoft's business in any way? Promoting cross play with Microsoft gives anyone who might want a PS4 still one less reason to get it or gives someone who might want a Xbox one more reason to get it.

I mean...do people not understand this? It's like the guy in this topic earlier stating he was on the fence on PS4 but now totally has wrote it off. Seriously? You're writing it off because it doesn't have a feature that has never existed between these companies and only is being talked about because Microsoft wants to seem like the "good guys" because they're so far behind?

All that said, this whole Fortnight business is not defendable. I could see why people would want to "boycott" due to those types of business practices. Just like people might boycott Microsoft due to the stuff they tried to pull when they were launching the Xbox One.

The whole situation is playing right into what Microsoft wanted. Make people angry at Sony for something that is a non-issue. And before this post gets attacked, I'll mention that I was a 360 owner last generation and have both consoles this gen.
