My "major" is math lol. I'm pretty much required to pick one of these beginner courses and then I'm never touching it again in the future.

I'd go with sociology. I'd rather learn about people and why they behave they way they do than about the environment. If anything, maybe I can learn why they see nothing wrong with exploiting it so carelessly.

As far as I know, a degree (which people are probably thinking this is for) is more lucrative a career path. There are several careers that utilize the degree (oil field to name one). Sociology, not so much. Sure it's interesting. Not quite as lucrative. That's why I voted for it.

Because it's more practical. Granted, sociology is the easier subject if you want to just go that route.

Take the one that interests you the most then. Which one you pick won't matter in the long run.

Sociology will be more fun. Unless the teacher is shit.

My Environmental Science course was significantly more entertaining than my Sociology class. Could have just been the teacher though; he was so excited about the field and that excitement spread throughout the classroom. We watched a bunch of TED Talks and discussed a lot of the things that we could do on a personal level to help the planet a bit. The stuff I learned in that class, I still use today. I didn't learn too much in Sociology, but I've always been good with people and understanding patterns so I don't know if I had much I could learn from an intro class.

My Sociology class was way more interesting to me than my environmental class, but I was also a social science major in general, so I was more into Psych/Soc/Anthro/Crim/etc than I was most other classes.

We had to do 20 hours of Community Service, but we could bring it down to 8 if we spent all on a Habitat for Humanity site for one day.

In my class we mostly just talked about human interaction and how different groups of people have different social norms, how the socialization process works, various cultural assumptions, social stratification, race/gender/sex issues, social politics, and so on. And to be fair to that class, a lot of what I learned is stuff I still reference today, whereas I'm not sure I can remember a single detail from the environmental class I took. But again, that's subjective - someone in social science fields will almost always get more out of social science classes, while someone who is drifting more towards STEM fields (which you are if you're a math major) might get more out of a hard science class.

On the other hand, you might want to deliberately go against the grain of your major and lean in to a humanities class (which sociology sort of shades into), so you can be more of a Renaissance Man who goes for breadth of knowledge and not just depth of knowledge in a narrow sphere of experience.

Also keep in mind, what you do in any given class is going to depend almost entirely on who the teacher is, and what textbook/syllabus they choose to teach. In one college Sociology 101 may be the worst class in the school, and in another college, it may be the best class you can possibly take. The same goes for pretty much any class and any subject.

The only real advice I could give you would be to tell you to track down other people in your school who already took those classes with the same professor you'd wind up having and ask them what they thought of the class, but I also understand that's kind of difficult to do, even if you aren't rushed for time. But really, it's the only answer that's actually going to be worthwhile to you.

Ultimately, you know yourself best, and know better what sort of class you'd get more out of than any of us here do. And none of us here know what your future professors would be like, so we can't really warn you away from someone who's going to be a major asshole or guide you towards someone who is going to change your life.

A math major might get more out of the STEM class.

If you're leaning Poli Sci, though, I'd definitely recommend Sociology.

I mostly chose it as I feel STEM majors are more "future proof" than others of course it still depends on how you use it. A fellow Scout of mine studied environmental science and I think went into law school with focus on environmental laws.

While I enjoyed humanities courses, a lot of it was just reading fiction, watching movies, etc, and I can't remember much besides that. (Granted, I *think* some of my foreign studies classes fell under humanities and those I can remember a so-so amount. It gave me a stronger basis for things I later researched independently.)

A humanities course was, however, where I first saw Moscow on the Hudson, so it certainly wasn't a total waste... well, outside that I could have just got a movie recommendation and been strongarmed into watching it.

What kind of things did you guys do in ES?

I realize I'm a bit late, but I didn't log into the site again until now.

We discussed a lot of the environmental issues that face the world now and will face in the future if current trends continue (such as a limited amount of clean water), as well as things we - both as a community and on a personal level - can do to help. We looked at potential futures and what would need to happen in order to meet those futures. We also discussed politics a bit and how legislature affects the environment, though "politics" was definitely not a focus of the class. My instructor was part of a UN board for the environment (I can't remember the exact board right now), and he shared a lot of the interesting projects that people were doing to help discover more about the world and to help solve some of the environmental issues that plague it. There's a lot of neat stuff out there.

A friend of mine, who happened to be an RA, mentioned simply showing up to the class anyway. Most likely, a student on the list will not show up. If you're there on day one, the instructor will remember that and may "bump" you to the top of the waiting list so that you'll be officially in, assuming that student doesn't show up the next week either.

Sociology is fun.

At my university, the cases we studied were conducted by the most sheltered and privileged people you can imagine, they contaminated the shit out of the societies they visited and basically treated the locals like pets.

Of course they weren't meant to be viewed that way though. Studying people who study people could be a lot more interesting than plan 'ol sociology.

Sociology would probably be better for a cakewalk class if you're just banging out a requirement. That being said, many moons ago when I took it, I absolutely hated my teacher (and it seemed like the feeling was mutual) so I didn't do all that well in it.
