I detected some feel goodery in chio though.

I prefer something irreverent. Where does it lie on the mean-spiritness scale of humor. I really liked the guy that likes to make fun of poor people.

Id say Cells At Work is pretty consistently great. One thing I like about it is I can totally picture it being used to help kids get interested in anatomy and stuff because it manages to be educational while also being funny and having some battles thrown in too.

Yeah, to say it gets mean spirited is putting it lightly.

It's difficult for me to keep track of who's watching what, but by that criteria you should REALLY be watching Asobi Asobase.

Starting Sengoku Youko now then gonna re check out Biscuit Hammer since that was half a lifetime ago.

I started reading Sengoku Youko quite a while ago. Haven't made a ton of progress though. It has an extremely boring 'main character' who's there for no reason, hanging out with the actual main characters, and he really holds it back. The others are more interesting, but it still feels way more generic than Spirit Circle or Biscuit Hammer.

Up to Franxx ep 20. Kill La Kill + Franxx spoilers: amused that they used the same twist as KLK here. Makes more sense in this context though I think. It's a twist that feels surprising but also makes everything before it make sense, which is the best kind of twist.

As FranXX ended, people could no longer give it the benefit of the doubt that all the crummy pieces might eventually come together and say anything interesting or meaningful. That false hope was all the series had so losing it was fatal. The quality of the production taking a dive and all the characters having their few interesting traits sanded down until they became cardboard cutouts didn't help, either.

I doubt my views on FranXX are what you were looking for, though!

Okay, some thoughts on Darling in the Franxx.

The first half was probably better in a few ways, but I still liked the second half quite a bit, especially the last few episodes. 14 was the only real stinker. The show was generally good about not dragging dumb drama out over multiple episodes, which I appreciated. Gonna go into detail on some individual aspects:

1. The animation. I didn't hear much about how great this looked for some reason, but man, the animation was awesome! The first 13 episodes had a ton of awesome looking mech battles, and the characters (especially Zero Two) had some very good looking scenes as well. Unfortunately the second half has practically no great animation. For a while I thought they were saving it for some epic scenes in the last two or three episodes, but the battles there were fairly unimpressive too, which made me sad. Thankfully there's no QUALITY, at least! I'd heard the series was aired three months before they initially planned to release it, and the second half makes me feel like that certainly could be true.

2. The mech designs. I think this show had like, maybe my favorite designs of any mecha series? I love how they look like humans, and having faces is awesome. This is probably part of what made the good animation possible, since mech battles are inherently boring, and it takes something special to make them look great (great looking mecha series still have great battles, but a mech battle with average animation is typically gonna suck compared to an ordinary action scene with average animation).

3. Zero Two. She was really great! For the first half. I think I've talked about this a couple times before, but examples like this are why I sometimes feel like character development is a bad thing, particularly with tsunderes. Writers sometimes struggle to actually develop the character rather than just changing them. Zero Two in the second half is basically a different, less interesting person. Sometimes you can do development with the character totally changing and have it be good, but this wasn't really one of those cases. Another example might be someone like Rin from Fate/Stay Night. In Fate and HF, she keeps her edge and stays interesting throughout. In UBW she has a romance and gets far more boring. It's not like I ever stopped like Zero Two, but she definitely wasn't the highlight she was in the first few eps. Gonna have to read some femdom doujins to assuage my sadness.

4. The characters. Cast was solid. I liked basically everyone. I don't think there were any huge standouts other than Zero Two herself, but they were all good. Hiro had actual good character development, so that was cool I think. I liked how they established that his nice guy persona in the past existed for purely selfish reasons.

5. The plot. Was basically always good stuff, especially in the last few episodes. The mix between battle episodes and character episodes was pretty good. I was kinda annoyed at the adults vs. kids thing that happened sometimes, but the twists from the end made that better at least. The setting was cool stuff too.

Anyway, great series! Not quite as good as TTGL or KLK, but still pretty excellent. Definitely up there as one of my favorite series from the year so far. Maybe even #2, behind Devilman Crybaby? Fun times.

Hiro is still not that good of a character, he got BETTER as the series went on but he's still pretty damn one dimensional and blah considering all the girls lusting after him.

The later episodes were kinda starting to shit themselves after the middle was building up the series well after a not great start. Now obviously this could change when I actually finish the series but so far it wasn't the best for how good the middle sections were getting.

Two girls! Not that many. I always found him entertaining. Certainly no Simon or Ryouma, but good.

P&S was a 10/10 series for the middle half or so! Scanty and Kneesocks introduction episode is incredible.

Monogatari is a solid 6 right now with high potential to rise. I guess it wouldn't be impossible to fall to 1/10 but it would have to really screw up somehow.

Also, I wound up only having time to watch the first Kizu movie since I last posted about it. It was pretty great! I liked how basically the whole plot of the series was kickstarted by Koyomi going out late at night to buy a sexy magazine after a glimpse of Hanekawa's underwear left him restless. She truly is the best girl.

P&S a great example case of a dub way better than it's sub. Didn't like P&S at all when it came out but loved it in english.

I think it's actually a pretty common opinion to prefer Hanekawa over Senjou <_<

...though I guess Senjou has five times as many favorites on MAL. Huh. Didn't think the difference would be that stark. Shinobu's fairly close behind Senjou though, with Araragi in third (I think Hanekawa's fourth).
