21 y/o Samuel Woodward, the California man accused of murdering 19 y/o Blaze Bernstein, a jewish kid who was gay says he may have fallen in with an "antigay and anti-jewish" crowd because he struggled with his own identity!!

He faces life in prison without parole if he's found guilty of a hate crime in addition to first degree murder as his lawyer, Edward Munoz wants the jury to consider he has a "serious mental disorder"

He said his client has Autism as a representative claimed Samuel's association to a NAZI GROUP that has been linked to 5 murders in a year was due to living with aspergers syndrome

They said those affected have difficulty with social interactions and said "He is a blonde, blue eyed young man. There's only going to be certain cllubs he's going to be allowed into"

They did not mention the group Atomwaffen Division, the group he was pictured with in Texas as he used to dye his hair black but appeared with his natural hue showing as he appeared at the hearing

Samuel claimed Blaze tried to kiss him and used that as a reason for the attack. Materials on his social media found that he was racist, misogynistic and anti-government.

Blaze, a University of Pennsylvania student was found dead in a shallow grave in Lake Forest Park after being stabbed 20 times

Sam previously faced 26 years to life while under California law, death penalty can only be sought if the murder was because of race, religion or nationality.

Blaze and Samuel used to be friends until they graduated as Blaze moved away and came back to his hometown to visit family. He got together again with Samuel, an old friend to hang out and it would be his last time he was seen again that day.

The defense is using a mental disorder and autism as a defense for the vicious killing as the jury will decide his fate on that account.

Not a free pass, but provided said disorder is treatable, it makes more sense to treat the disorder and end up with a productive member of society than to jail them.

And that's why it's not "getting out of jail for free," it's "being involuntarily committed to an intensive treatment program, to be released only when the disorder in question has been crushed beyond the point where it will ever threaten anyone again." Of course, that relies on mental health care services that aren't completely useless, which is a bit of a stretch to assume in the US, but once you pass that hurdle it's a perfectly effective way to fix all of those things that render him unfit for society and necessitate his removal.

You misunderstand if you think I want to help him. I want to fix him. The man he is right now is garbage. So make him into somebody that doesn't suck. That way you at least get some tax revenue out of him.

If I was the kid who was killed farther, family member or friend I'd get great satisfaction knowing his murderer is dead. I'd call it karma and probably the best justice that could be served in this situation.

Based on what? The concept of being "too far gone" for rehabilitation to be possible is thrown around a lot, but nobody ever seems to have a concrete basis for drawing such a line.

In a way, yeah. Murder somebody because they piss you off? Obviously that's bad, and not the sort of person people want roaming the streets, but it's a relatively narrow focus in terms of potential targets. Murder somebody because they're a certain race? That means that everyone of that race is a potential target, and the only thing standing between that attitude and a successful genocide is a lack of opportunity. It also means that the murder can be seen as a form of terrorist threat, which I know you're okay with punishing harshly.

Now, I personally disagree with the death penalty in pretty much any circumstance where it isn't absolutely necessary (such as a credible escape risk for a particularly terrible criminal), so I still don't agree with that policy, but I can understand the logic.
