Tried it out for two hours yesterday and 1 1/2 today. Not really a fan so far.

I'm averaging about $16 an hour, gonna give it a week and see what happens.

It's okay I guess when I have down time but I can't see how this could be a profitable full time job.

Well okay

I'm gonna tell you the story of why I'm already done

So it's about 4:30 on Friday. I'm going to the browns preseason game later in the day so I'm like okay I've done enough. I'm about 40 minutes from home so I turn on the destination filter. Drive for like 2 minutes, get a ping for a ride. Cool they are also going the way I am and it's surging a bit here. Pickup is at the social security administration, huh that doesn't sound good. Get there, 3 women of various sizes and the kind that don't tip (if you know what I mean) fuck this is not gonna be worth it. Everything is fine for a bit, they change the destination and add a second destination. I'm cursing in my head right now. We get to destination one, one gets out to get her check, wait forever, she comes back with a piece of fried chicken (not even joking bros, I'll post the dash footage if you want) and just gets in my car like it's cool. Next destination is 20 fucking minutes in the opposite direction I want to go.

Total time for this ride: 59:01
Pay: $21.34
No fucking tip

Well, I wasn't a driver for Uber, but a Messenger (RUSH) for them. And yea, it's really isn't that profitable as a Full Time job if you're looking to make $50K-$60K a year. Maybe if you live in more 'Rural' area or a really Big City w/o alot of Cabbie Competition.

It's really good as a part-time/side gig, (working your own hours) so if you already have a decent job and wanna make extra cash, then go for it.

Yeah I did it part time for a while. Some nights I did well like with these drunk, coked up brits that tipped me 40 bucks but overall it's kind of shitty and I maybe got a tip on average like once out of every 5-7 trips. And the people that didnt tip were always the most inconsiderate and demanding. It's definitely not worth the mileage you put on your car

If you can, try to pick people up at the airport. A lot of times you'll get classier customers that actually tip

I've done both. A lot of times uber naturally would drag me out to shitty neighborhoods because people out there dont drive as much but that's why I always carried my 38 with me

I always carry my 45 or 9 anyway. Have the 45 in my urban carry holster and the 9 in the dash board glove box thing when I'm driving. I'm looking at truck mounts for my raven but I don't want it to be out in the open and at that point it's just not practical.

It's not a 38 most women could use practically. It's a cheap piece of shit really. A woman would struggle to rack it back. I just wanted something that would get the job done though and that was one I got as a loaner froma buddy of mine. I'm not much of a gun buyer really

It'd be fruitless if I'm not going to drive at night because then I wouldn't be driving during surge pricing times.

Tbh really when it comes down to it, if your rider is going to rob you they'd have the gun to your head before you'd know what was going down but I guess it feels nice to have one anyway just in case you get into a situation that isnt so cut and dry like that or doesn't directly involve you. But with everything linked on the app its pretty stupid to rob your driver unless someone sees that you're an uber driver and pretends to be the rider

My cousin drove for one of those services while he was looking for a new job after first moving to a city. He was trying to do it as a 40 hr/week job and was aiming for $1k/wk... then it was $800/wk... and luckily he found something else because I *think* he was only doing like $600 which was before factoring in the cost of gas (and not even considering the wear & tear to his vehicle).

A service like that probably works best when you're looking to kill time or can find a fare who's wants to go in the same direction you're driving. (Granted, never tried the service; do you know where your fares want to go before picking them up?)

What area are you in? Im in LA and I wind up averaging usually about $20/hr real time, $25/hr drive time, which is just their fake way of making it look like youre making more money by cutting out all the downtime.

If youre in a place with Charlotte surge where you get a guaranteed dollar amount for surge or its just plain not surging at all then avoid events like the plague. If you think youre going to be jammed up in traffic for the time being then you may want to ignore any 45+ warnings and just focus on a few shorties for a quest bonus. And on the inverse if its surging nearby dont drive into it but if youre right next to it then decline everything until you get a surged ride and hope its a long one to multiply your bonus.

My uncle does it, he says the key is to lease a hybrid car so you have very good gas milage. It costs him about $400 a month, but almost nothing in gas so the driving is pure profit.

He drives in SF and makes about $30 an hour average.

Now he does lose about $100 a week towards his car, but he has a brand new car this way, and uses it himself, so it's not really a bad deal and he makes up most of that in gas.

SF may also be a way higher rate of pay, since it's so hard to park and many people want to get around. Tipping is also normal. Not everyone does it, but enough do to increase your base.

This the base is about $20, then subrtract gas and add tips (per hour that is).

If you can get your gas to be under a $1 an hour with a hybrid, then it's 20-40$ depending on tips and how many people you pick up/drop off.

As for the main question: No. I have thought about it, but have decided against it. I don't really like or use those companies, anyway. I'd probably rather use a normal taxi, if I ever need to.

I think it depends on what part of the city you live in. Even different areas in different cities can say what good and what's not. If the part of the city you live in is cheaper than another part, then $20/hr might be pretty good...

I think it depends on what part of the city you live in. Even different areas in different cities can say what good and what's not. If the part of the city you live in is cheaper than another part, then $20/hr might be pretty good...

Well considering I dont even live in the city, because fuck you $2500 studios, its fine for me for a couple bonus hours a day or so. I might even devote one of my off days for a whole day of driving and come out an extra $300 per week on top of my paycheck. Its not meant to be life changing, just extra pocket change.

I go to work.

No really. I work in DTLA so its usually pretty central to wherever Im at. Even in my off days Ill just stop by literally only to use the restroom.

But if its 04:30 - 23:00 Ill just beeline to the nearest Starbucks since their policy change has forced them all to let me use the restroom there even without buying anything. Other than that a Target or Walmart is usually a good second choice.
