==================================== { 1,040th Place } [70's][ 180th Place] Song: "Baba O'Riley" Band: The Who Album: Who's Next ---{ 1971 }--- Genre: Hard Rock Score:[6.1][5.1][4.2][3.3][3.3][4.2][8.2] = [34.4] = [4.914] Video:
Write-Up: Perhaps one of the most recognizable intro riffs ever that most people have no idea who it came from. See what I did there? :P Anyway, perhaps even more popular and recognizable from the hit CBS show C.S.I. and I don't mean the spin-offs. Straight from the original. As you can see in the video, the late 60's/early 70's were a hell of a time for peace and standing up to the man. It was a time of major changes in the world when freedom of expression couldn't have been more in your face and I do believe the music here expresses that. Of course all of that is up to interpretation by the listener. Some would just say that these classic hits were a side effect to the drug infused hippie revolution but who cares about that generation since they are mostly dead by now anyway am I rite? ====================================

"Best read of the game goes to se7en. Who correctly surmised this town is full of idiots." - Corrik Se7enthrust ~ Dude_Dexter
Write-Up: I used to think this had a really catchy beat but over the years the simplicity of the beat has waned on me. I mean it obviously is true Dance Pop for sure so you can really get into it on the dance floor. But um.. something else about it remains disappointing to say the least. There is absolutely no substance here in the message. It's just a for fun rhythm romp atleast until that last 15 seconds or so but I believe they've cut that out of the radio edit anyway. I do remember quite well when Chumbawamba hit the scene as I was a Sophmore in high school. Damn near everybody was screaming "I get knocked down..." lol. There really isn't much else that the band has done that is all that memorable tbh. Just another not-quite-one-hit-wonder bands imo. ====================================

"Best read of the game goes to se7en. Who correctly surmised this town is full of idiots." - Corrik Se7enthrust ~ Dude_Dexter
Write-Up: Interesting tune for sure that I may have simply not bumped it higher because of unfamiliarity. It almost feels like it could be Progressive Rock but there isn't enough variance in the segments in the song. It does sound quite epic though on the other hand. Sadly it didn't chart as well as I was expecting after hearing it even for the first time. Perhaps it was simply a tune overlooked in an ocean of music that poured out of the era. I have added the band to my list of bands to check out at least so I thank the nominee for yet another stash of tunes to explore. The storytelling is decent even though I didn't pick up on all of it (actually I didn't really take the time to read all the lyrics like I usually do). With these rankings comes a ton of reading and sometimes I cut corners admittedly. Not sure if this will pop up on a ranking regret but I could see it going a little bit higher in a re-ranking. ====================================

==================================== { 1,037th Place } [90's][ 219th Place] Song: "I Want You" Band: Savage Garden Album: Savage Garden ---{ 1997 }--- Genre: Electronic Rock Score:[6.2][3.2][3.3][7.2][2.1][3.2][9.3] = [34.5] = [4.928] Video:
Write-Up: Wow. Again straight back to high school and the 90's I trip. This was a big hit when it came out even though I'm not sure what is sung through half of it. Is that a different language or just gibberish? (speaking of the chorus vocals in particular). It has a catchy bounce-your-knee effect but it isn't strong enough to go nuts over. There are better Savage Garden songs imo really. The 2nd tune in the Electronic Rock category and it actually pleases me that this knocks the Evanescence song off the list. I had a few friends that liked this band enough to hang posters on their walls but I don't think I would have ever gone that far personally. ====================================

"Best read of the game goes to se7en. Who correctly surmised this town is full of idiots." - Corrik Se7enthrust ~ Dude_Dexter
Write-Up: So.. I got the 3rd degree from the wife over this tune expecting to drop so low. She really was not happy that I told her it wasn't making it into the Top 1,000 at the least. It was one of her picks as you might expect and I don't blame her for liking the tune really. It is sort of iconic tbh and was a major hit for Blondie. It came out when Disco started to take a turn for near extinction and actually helped slow down the inevitable death of Disco. Nevertheless the genre would still meet it's fate in the early 80's. It's a really simple beat and the vocals aren't actually as terrible as I score them here. It's just that preferences and such if you know what I mean. I just noticed that we are getting really close to the 5 pointers though so in a manner of speaking this didn't do all that terrible. If only there weren't so many other great tunes that I liked better... ====================================

"Best read of the game goes to se7en. Who correctly surmised this town is full of idiots." - Corrik Se7enthrust ~ Dude_Dexter
Write-Up: Oh yeah... this is definitely coming back in a ranking regret later I can already tell. Oh well. I am sticking to my guns and nothing below 1,000 right now gets bumped unfortunately. It's a very creative mix of sound and the backtrack is far better than the vocals and front instrumentation. I can almost ignore the vocals though and sink into that drum beat and background harmonics. There are a couple of nice riffs in the mix as well but there isn't enough to get nostalgic over although I'm sure fans of the band just may. Looks like you are running out of nominations though NBI. Not sure how much longer you'll be sitting at the top of the nominator challenge list. ====================================

"Best read of the game goes to se7en. Who correctly surmised this town is full of idiots." - Corrik Se7enthrust ~ Dude_Dexter
Write-Up: This is a pretty cool piece let's be honest but one thing I unfortunately didn't consider pre-ranking is that an instrumental which has no lyrics cannot score any points in the Lyric category really. (I mean it could score slightly if I feel like I'm getting a poetic message from the music) but for the most part there will be a lot of 0's in the stead of no lyrics. That being said I gave this a .3 because even though there are no words I'm pretty sure there is a powerful message behind this tune. It's a classic score for the Rocky fans out there obviously but anyone looking for a decent Pop instrumental may approve as well. ====================================

"Best read of the game goes to se7en. Who correctly surmised this town is full of idiots." - Corrik Se7enthrust ~ Dude_Dexter
Write-Up: Ouch! The 3rd song by The Who to fall short of the Top 1,000. That's something I wasn't entirely expecting when I started this. The thing about most of the music from these guys is that it's all just ok to listen to. There isn't a lot that you would ask a friend if they've heard it yet imo. It's good rock no doubt but I'm shooting for stuff that's a bit more memorable imo. This song didn't top too many charts but was a fair favorite among compiled lists in the genre at least to the extent of my research anyway. I would still tell any 70's Rock fans to check out this album though. ====================================

"Best read of the game goes to se7en. Who correctly surmised this town is full of idiots." - Corrik Se7enthrust ~ Dude_Dexter
Write-Up: So, how many people forgot that this wasn't Nirvana? I totally forgot personally. I actually think that nearly every time I've ever heard this on the radio I've assumed that it was Nirvana. Who wouldn't? The vocals are pretty damn close and that chorus just screams Kurt Cobain doesn't it? I can't be the only person that thinks so. Anyway, STP in the house when they were growing in their popularity back in the 90's. It's a slow beat that never really speeds up so I don't really experience any sort of climax in the tune other than the last pass through the chorus. Not much else to give you here unfortunately. ====================================

I find it hard to believe that someone that grew up in the 90s doesn't know other songs from Jamiroquai like Cosmic Girl, Deeper Underground or Canned Heat.
And they did release an album last year with quite a few nifty songs. ---
Write-Up: Haven't heard this before this ranking and I'm surprised that with as few Country songs that made it on the list that this almost made the Top 1,000. I'm not a very big fan of Country music if I didn't already make that obvious but the video with this tune kinda softened me up and I took it humorously which probably made it easier for it to score points. Gotta get a kick out of the rhyming scheme used here too. It could be catchy if I gave it enough of a chance but that won't happen in my house. The wife hates Country music more than I do. The band won 5 or 6 awards in the last 3 years and were nominated for as many more so I'd say they are rising in popularity among the fans. ====================================

I more or less just lived through it lol.

"Best read of the game goes to se7en. Who correctly surmised this town is full of idiots." - Corrik Se7enthrust ~ Dude_Dexter
Write-Up: Speaking of the 80's and Damn, only 2 more nominations left for you Bane. Tbh I actually thought this would be the highest placing song of yours. I can't remember if this was a fill in from another nominator but it obviously strays from all the other Metalcore that you nominated. It's got a standard Rock drum beat but it sounds like it's got just a little bit more in the rhythm imo. The vocals are unpolished if you ask me but not a whole lot was done perfectly in the 80's since most music was about the instrumentation imo. I still to this day have not watched all of Heavy Metal so I wasn't recognizing this from there. I have heard it plenty of times elswhere though. We are now getting very close to the 5 pointers. Hype! ====================================

"Best read of the game goes to se7en. Who correctly surmised this town is full of idiots." - Corrik Se7enthrust ~ Dude_Dexter
Write-Up: It looks like we are gonna assault the 70's for a few rankings since 4 out of the next 5 will be just that, from the 70's. Where are my Democrats at? lol. Of course anyone who knows what I mean knows that this was the selected campaign theme for many years by none other than Bill Clinton. It even appears at various Democratic conventions because of Bill. I'd say he could have done better tbh. It makes sense in a way considering the way he ran his campaign and he did win two elections so I guess it worked. Anyway, still far from my favorite Fleetwood Mac tune. It did fair on the charts but there aren't a lot of discussions going on about how great the song is or at least I didn't find much. It's the kind of song that can get rather annoying on multiple replays so I have no idea how it worked to win elections. ====================================

Write-Up: The 2nd tune from the Cars so far in this ranking. Not the worst and not the greatest. I personally think the band did it's best in the 80's though. Got a nice steady beat here though and it serves as good background noise at the pool hall. I don't have a ton to review here as far as my general interests go but the band does have a mild following. I didn't think this song was going to make it too far but it did well enough for being one of the last 20 songs or so that I added to the 70's list. ====================================

"Best read of the game goes to se7en. Who correctly surmised this town is full of idiots." - Corrik Se7enthrust ~ Dude_Dexter
Write-Up: Hmm... it seems that this tune may have slipped higher than intended. I wonder what kind of ear I had the day that I initially ranked it because I'm hearing it now and I'm not sure what I ranked. I may have thought that it sounded like something else at the time because the beat is higher than I'd give it now. Fortunately for the song I couldn't even take points away at this point if I wanted to. Ah, I see. It got a bump for the message as the song is lyrically sound. It isn't among the norm for Classic Rock that I favor but it has a sound that owns the genre to a point. Other than that, on to the next song I suppose. ====================================

But Canned Heat is featured in one of the board's darlings, Elite Beat Agents!! ---
Write-Up: The first minute or so of this song is far better than the rest of it imo. It's kind of disappointing in a way that I feel like the song starts out strong and then trails off to mediocrity somewhere but I can't help but feel that way. This is the second Judas Priest song to make an appearance and it actually may also be the last but I can't recall atm. This was one of the few songs that I actually hated playing in Guitar Hero when I was obsessed with that so I kinda knew that it may not have made it far in this ranking when I added the nomination to the list. I'm surprised to see it higher than several of the other songs that I have ranked recently though. ====================================

"Best read of the game goes to se7en. Who correctly surmised this town is full of idiots." - Corrik Se7enthrust ~ Dude_Dexter
Write-Up: Oh hey it's Foreigner! Once upon a time these guys were one of my favorite bands back when I was more about the 80's than any other decade. Eventually when I expanded my interests they fell pretty far on the best band list and now I just like a few of their greatest hits really. That means there will be more further up the list of course. I wanna say that the intro piano riff is nearly unmistakable but that'd obviously not be true since I already know a couple folks that have no idea who these guys are. The wiki states that this is one of the band's most popular songs but that most certainly can't be correct. Uh hello, "I Want to Know What Love Is" and "Waiting For A Girl Like You" are far more popular and syndicated than any of their other work. Btw this is the final Ranking before the 5 pointers! ====================================

"Best read of the game goes to se7en. Who correctly surmised this town is full of idiots." - Corrik Se7enthrust ~ Dude_Dexter
Write-Up: And our first 5 pointer is one of my wife's selections. It's also a Bruno Mars song. I don't have a lot of fantastic things to say here honestly. The whole song is kind of blah imo. It did well on the charts and was a big hit in 2010 but I got so tired of hearing it on the radio that I wasn't too thrilled to have to rank it here. It's a song about liking someone more than they like you I guess. ====================================

"Best read of the game goes to se7en. Who correctly surmised this town is full of idiots." - Corrik Se7enthrust ~ Dude_Dexter
Write-Up: I like the beat here and I'd probably listen to it on the radio but this is far from my favorite CCR tune. It's too bad most of them are in the 60's and not included in this ranking but you can bet if I ever decided to rank some 60's songs they'd be there. We also get a new genre here with Roots Rock. There actually have been a few songs already that could have possibly qualified in the genre but they had other stronger themes. It's kind of weird but I keep getting a sense of Aerosmith's Cryin' somewhere in here. Can anyone else hear it? I swear there are some similarities in the backtrack. ====================================

Write-Up: Snake's gonna give me s*** for this one lol. I honestly didn't think that I'd drop a Metallica song below 1,000 other songs but here we are and here we go.. There is a ton of Metallica that I love but in the last couple of releases I've sort of become distant with the band. Or hell I might as well be honest here. I lost interest when they dumped Newsted. I think it was the worst thing that could have happened to the band post Burton. I don't even know the name of the newest band member and really don't care to know tbh. This song just doesn't measure up to the iconic tunes the band is more known for imo. Luckily I wasn't too restrictive on the number of songs per band and there will be a healthy dose of Metallica's best peppered throughout further up the list. ====================================

Write-Up: Damnit. I had to replace the link for this again after having to do it 3 or 4 times since I started this ranking. Hopefully the new one doesn't get taken down before folks get to listen. Anyway, this one may surprise folks yet again as it is dropping so low. It's not that I think it is terrible or anything but it is a rather slow song for my Rock interests. The beat is fine and when the song actually kicks up it's classic. When you ask the question of what happened after the Beatles broke up though, this is one of the answers. The single sold more than 1,000,000 copies in 1974 alone pretty much cementing this as one of the band's most successful hits. ====================================

"Best read of the game goes to se7en. Who correctly surmised this town is full of idiots." - Corrik Se7enthrust ~ Dude_Dexter
Write-Up: This song was one of the last minute fit-ins that I had found to fill the 10's list and I think it actually did pretty well for something I wasn't entirely enthusiastic about putting on the list in the first place. It's got a decent rhythm and melody really. I wouldn't be surprised though if this makes an appearance in a ranking regret later on since these kind of tunes tend to drill into your brain until you are a fan. So if you don't want to like it, I suggest you be careful with how many times you listen. :P ====================================

Write-Up: This song always takes me back to the first time I was living single with a roomate. I lived with one of my best friends from grade school and she was always an on and off love interest growing up. We were both in college at the time and hosted many a party at our place. I am always reminded of this time in my life when I hear this song because it was one of her favorites so I got to hear it a lot. I was really into stuff like Metallica and Linkin Park at the time so it was interesting that her music interests were always the opposite of mine. We never really decided to date each other officially but at home we certainly lived like a couple. Of course that only lasted until we both found other people to invest our time in. Anyway, that was probably the last time I really heard this song until this ranking. ====================================

"Best read of the game goes to se7en. Who correctly surmised this town is full of idiots." - Corrik Se7enthrust ~ Dude_Dexter
Write-Up: I swear the background to this song sounds just like a Sonic the Hedgehog theme. Actually you could almost take out the vocals and it would be pretty close to one for sure imo. It was a big hit in the 80's but it isn't a song I really ever appreciated tbh. I sort of feel like the song goes nowhere or maybe that is a highlight of how disinterested I am in the song. It made it this far because I couldn't deny that I was familiar with it really. I mean the chart topping score helped too. What makes you so interested in this song Dragon? You seemed pretty intent on having it in your nominations so I was just curious. ====================================

"Best read of the game goes to se7en. Who correctly surmised this town is full of idiots." - Corrik Se7enthrust ~ Dude_Dexter
Write-Up: What the hell is this Disney s***? Just kidding but it does seem to have a direct positive message contained in a decent melody. Never heard of the band before or the song so this is the first time experiencing it. I do like the intro guitar riff which becomes the main riff through the song. The vocals seem like less than a final cut of the song but that could be associated with the recording equipment used. Um... ok maybe I should have watched the video first. Are these guys cultists or something? They definitely have the appearance of a nutty church band imo. ====================================

"Best read of the game goes to se7en. Who correctly surmised this town is full of idiots." - Corrik Se7enthrust ~ Dude_Dexter
Write-Up: Interesting... I originally thought that Animotion was the creator of this tune but as it turns out they just did it best. Good ol' Synth Pop from the 80's am I rite? There are better examples for sure but in the 80's a lot of these songs tended to follow the same beat/rhythm format imo. It's not overly exciting and isn't really something that you can sing to if you are practicing your vocals. I have the Animotion version on my Xbox and I have actually rampaged in Saints Row 2 with this playing in the background before. Funny thing is that most of the 80's music I have on the Xbox is pretty good background noise to destroy s*** lol. Actually I just realized that this was also in Grand Theft Auto: Vice City.
Write-Up: This isn't too bad of a catchy pop song which is to date the band's best song as far as I can tell. I don't really recall this from 2014 so either I just didn't listen to the radio as much as I thought or it didn't become popular until recently. I find it interesting that I just heard this on the radio about a week ago though when I was so soon to rank it here. I can see this going up the list a little bit but I feel like the substance is minimal although the video that goes along with it is a great addition. I actually almost thought it was from a real movie or something. Damnit though... after hearing it a couple more times it is at risk of getting stuck in my head lol. ====================================

==================================== { 1,014th Place } [80's][ 216th Place] Song: "Higher Love" Band: Steve Winwood Album: Back In The High Life ---{ 1986 }--- Genre: Pop Score:[5.2][3.3][5.2][4.3][5.2][2.2][10.1] = [35.5] = [5.071] Video:
Write-Up: A classic from the 80's but one where I kind of wish the verse and chorus were more compatible or cohesive if you know what I mean. Obviously what is there works but I don't get the same feelings from the verse as I do from that chorus and it almost feels like the song suffers a little bit from the lack of complete harmony. Anyway, I noticed that we still haven't had a song from 1985 yet and I almost thought this was one at first. I wonder if we'll see one before the top 1,000 speaking of which, we are getting so close! I was hoping to have dropped everything to get us there before the end of the day today so at this rate it looks promising with 13 to go. ====================================

It's not of my favorites from the new album either tbh. However, I will say "Hardwired" had some other great songs on it, like Now That We're Dead, that got many plays out of me. ---
Did they dump Newsted or did he leave? I thought he left.
Yeah he left, though obviously it was all the bullying and hazing he received over the years that led to the decision so it was basically like he was kicked out anyway. ---
==================================== { 1,013th Place } [10's][ 191st Place] Song: "That's What I Like" Band: Bruno Mars Album: 24K Magic ---{ 2016 }--- Genre: R & B Score:[5.3][3.2][5.3][4.3][4.2][3.1][10.1] = [35.5] = [5.071] Video:
Write-Up: Another Bruno Mars song and another of my wife's picks. This isn't a song I necessarily find entertaining to listen to. It's got some jagged beats but the rhythm is mild enough to offset it a little bit. 2016 was clearly a great year for Bruno as he had several successful hits around that time. There are a few songs below this one that I wish were not so I kinda feel annoyed that this is as high as it is but it did so damn well on the charts that the score carried it here. This song did win 3 Grammy's at the 60th Annual Grammy Awards; Song of the Year, Best R & B Song and best R & B Performance respectively. ====================================

Write-Up: This was a pretty popular song in the 80's but I think the only real thing I like about it is that guitar riff that plays on a loop from start to finish. Unfortunately it wasn't enough to get this any higher. It takes more than a decent riff I like in a song to get it to a place where it's awsomeness is indisputable to me. There are still some better Springsteen tunes on the way so don't worry if you are a fan. This song is a bit shorter than most but still feels complete in a way. I guess once you realize that the majority of this song was made up on the spot during one of Springsteen's "Born in the USA" jam sessions you can appreciate it a little more. I know I couldn't make anything half as catchy on the fly and I've been playing guitar off and on for almost two decades. ====================================

"Best read of the game goes to se7en. Who correctly surmised this town is full of idiots." - Corrik Se7enthrust ~ Dude_Dexter
Write-Up: Because of unfamiliarity I sort of feel like this fell through the cracks in the opposite direction. On the surface I don't mind the beat and vocals but as a whole package it isn't necessarily a song I would listen to on a regular basis. The message of the song makes a bit of sense for me so it got some points there. Unfortunately it was right now when I realized that this song was used in Blair Witch 2 so it should have gotten atleast a point or so in the memories category since I've had to watch that movie a few times with the wife. (She's a horror buff and every year I have to slog through many of her horror favorites which include many B-rated sequels). Anyway, there are some obvious reasons this made it higher than I was expecting but I can't help that it feels like I should have had it lower than some tunes I've already dropped. ====================================

Write-Up: Not sure why I'm not more critical of this song since there are a few parts that stray from the kind of harmony I prefer but I guess the ok beat and sort of ok vocals make if fine. Originally I thought this was that Duran Duran song until I saw the year and then I wasn't sure what song it was. I have heard this a bit on the radio but I couldn't tell you if I've heard anything else from the band. They sound like a band that has been around for awhile but I think they only have a couple of albums so far. Their "Garage band" sound kinda makes me think of Foo Fighters really. I think this might have been their best song from Wilder Mind but I could be wrong since I'm not completely familiar with the band. ====================================
