You have arrived to my 2nd "Ranks 1,000+" project and this time around instead of B8 users we will be tackling 1,300 songs from the last 5 decades.
Just a couple of notes about the list: -This ranking is almost entirely subjective. Please do not engage in a debate with me about whether this list qualifies as a legit "Best of" list. This is Not a ranking to determine the "best" based on record numbers or sales statistics etc.
This is purely a collection of tunes that are most appealing to my personal interests in music found within the amount of time I spent on research (with 300 nominations included). When the ranking is over you are more than welcome to reference any tunes that I did not include. I'm always down for great music and who knows, it is entirely possible that I will have simply overlooked some stuff that should be here. I listened to more than 5,000+ songs over the course of about 13 months or so, so I hope that was enough ground covered to at least offer some satiability. I have personally enjoyed the research either way.

Why didn't I include the 60's? Simple, because I'm not confident I could have pulled 200 songs from that decade and also I would have known immediately what the #1 song would have been for this ranking.

[The Beat] This will represent the overall rhythm and progression of the song imo. A slight evaluation of the instruments used in a song will also have weight on the final beat score.
[The Hook] This will represent how likely it is that I listen to the whole song if it popped up on the radio. It will also represent the interest that I have to even finish a song.
[The Lyrics] This will represent how well the verse and chorus are written imo. It will also represent my ability to memorize and sing along with the song if I have that interest. I also use this to measure how well the vocals mesh with the rest of the song imo.
[The Memories] This will represent how much the song invokes personal memories. In some cases a song may gain points based on it's use in other Pop Culture I am familiar with.
[The Message] This will represent the message of the song or the difficulty of understanding it's meaning imo. It also represents a degree of emotional response that I get from hearing the song. I also include points if a song comes with a decent backstory.
[The Stickiness] This will represent the likelyhood that the song will get stuck in my head when I hear it. Depending on whether it's a verse, chorus, beat, simple riff or the whole damn song can determine how many extra points I give.
[Top 100 Bonus] The ONLY piece of this scoring system that will be slightly Objective. I will score based on an average of the info I find. Top 100 lists, Best song lists, overall sales, awards won etc.
[The Leaning Points] Every Song ranked will receive a "leaning" score in all 7 categories. A [0.1], [0.2] or [0.3] will be added to help the further breakdown of a songs final score. It's simply as follows: [0.1] = I'm not 100% sure how I feel about a final score. [0.2] = The final score can go either way up or down. [0.3] = I am 100% confident in a final score.

Write-Up: Ew what a terrible song to kick off the 3rd topic! Yet another song though that my clients just loved to hear every time I had to transport them somewhere. Sometimes I wish I had just lied and said the radio was broken or something to avoid crap like this lol. Anyway, I can't say for sure if this topic was delayed because of how much I didn't want to have to listen to this song again (J/k) but it may as well be the truth since I hate it so much. Why did I give it an average beat score then? Um.. well, when you hear it a thousand times you can't do anything but to admit that the song is polished to a degree or I'm semi-brainwashed I guess. Why is it here then? Another choosing of the wife's. I'd rather shut off the radio almost any chance I can get though and the lyrics are semi-annoying and half-brained too imo. It does score well with moderate listeners though so I didn't get the chance to gleefully rank it at the bottom which sucks. :/ ====================================

Write-Up: Another song that I have sort of recently decided to dub as "Jukebox Rock" as you can almost always find this among the selections among them. Certainly in my area that is the case anyway. There are 2 billiards and at least 4 bars I know of that have jukeboxes just in my city and they all contain this widely known and partially iconic song. At one of the pool halls I go to it can even be heard 2 or 3 times depending on how long you hang around. Since I love to play pool when I get the chance I have indeed heard it quite a bit. Interestingly enough it never really seems boring and generally adds to the atmosphere although I do feel a little bit of disinterest in multiple re-plays. If you happen to be a fan, there are still to come a couple much better tunes from the band so don't despair. ====================================

Write-Up: Speaking of "Jukebox Rock" it seems we have two in a row. This is a pretty common selectable tune in my experience and not a half bad one too for a place with a dance floor. It's a little outside of my normal playlist for glam rock (since it's filled with lots of Queen) but the beat should be recognizable by almost anyone over the age of 30 imo. It's really catchy and rocked the charts pretty well becoming one of the biggest hits of '73/'74. You may wonder why it scores so low in 4 out of 7 categories for me after saying that but it's simple. Popular doesn't always mean best in my eyes. I have a few obsessive compulsive issues with this tune and it isn't one I can slap on repeat for too long without annoying my ear drums. Regardless... I can at least recognize the sell to the general audience here. ====================================

Write-Up: Oh boy... I feel like we might end up having our 2nd ranking regret here. I may have gotten into a particular 'funk' where this song raises the appeal detector in my brain after an incident I had to deal with recently. At the very least I have developed some muscle memory over this tune already. You know when you hear songs and they instantly bring back certain memories? Well, that's what is happening for me here only it's in the fresh stage. Before this nomination though, I had never actually heard this song although after a second thought I could have heard the band referenced somewhere but just didn't know what I was hearing about. For folk music this is really the ideal format imo. It has a message that sinks in as soon as the music does which is what I like about most of the decent folk music I hear. ====================================

Write-Up: The piano in this song is probably my favorite part tbh. However, I'm not as emotionally impacted as I can certainly imagine some folks might be here as it is a really melancholic tune to say the least. The song was featured in a favorite show of mine called "Six Feet Under" during it's finale and even appeared in a trailer for the 2008 Prince of Persia game. Oprah Winfrey also used it in her "farewell season" of her show in 2010 to generate atmosphere for the show's closing. But my favorite finale appearance came along in The Simpsons in the most recent episode of the 29th season which parodies the ending to Six Feet Under coincidentally and hilariously enough. ====================================

Write-Up: Dang. I never knew I'd place a Nirvana song below the top 1,000 songs in a ranking but here we are. Despite the moderate popularity of this tune I honestly feel like it is quite unpolished for reasons. It's a simple riff and beat but there isn't a ton of magic in the vocalization here in the way that lyrics and vocals are meant to meet imo. After multiple listens the song just feels hollow and circled entirely around the repetitious beat. It would be pretty top tier for Grunge though for most of Nirvana's fans as far as I can tell. The song is recorded on the band's most successful album and is considered one of the top 3 songs on it. Even though I am willing to listen to it more than 50% of the time, I can't connect to it on a regular fan's level because it lacks a bit of substance for me. ====================================

Write-Up: Geesh! I'm never gonna live this down dropping a One Direction song after a Nirvana song lol. I really don't like this band and I'm not sure why my wife chose so many of them for the list but this is only the 2nd of like 5 songs that appear in the ranking I think (I haven't double checked atm) but it's more than what I would have chosen for sure. The chorus does carry a catchy beat here but that's about it imo. I feel pretty disinterested in every other category but the gdamn song topped the charts giving it almost a perfect score there so this doesn't drop as low as I wanted it too (yeah I was secretly rooting for failure here) but at least it didn't make it into the Top 1,000. ====================================

Write-Up: Hmm I dunno... at first I was digging this tune to a point but as I revisit it for the write-up I'm not so sure. That "do you feel it" line is very sharp on my ears atm. I do like the background piano play here though. Other than that I'm not completely certain where I was going with the other scores when I originally scored this tune. I would say that this is the rare case where I got things in reverse and perhaps scored it higher than I intended. Nonetheless I said I was not going to change any score before we hit the Top 1,000 so I guess I'll leave this as it is. ====================================

Write-Up: Ok then. Had to change the video due to a copyright claim. Coulda sworn I had the official music video selected the first time around but I guess I didn't. If I were changing scores at this point I'd probably bump up the Beat and Hook here as the more I listen the "Better" they get imo. :P Anyway, this might actually be the most recent favorite of GnR of mine (since honestly most of their other stuff sounds like they should have hung up their guitars and retired by now to me). The band can't top their significance in the 90's imo. The band still has a decent following of course even though it didn't get them to the top of the charts on this one. I thought it was funny to learn that the music video was delayed (missing a slated release) by none other than Lars Ulrich from Metallica who had given pre-authorization to use his image in the video but then later only signed off on one appearance forcing a video edit. I used to love Metallica above all else but the last couple of decades have proven that Lars is nothing but a self-righteous f***wit so I'm not too surprised here. ====================================

Write-Up: Hey, some more "Jukebox Rock"! I swear this has to be in every single jukebox I've ever come across and that has been many over the years. It's undeniably ZZ Top's greatest hit imo too. In all honesty I think I've heard this almost every single time I visited a bar in the last 15 years as well. It's definitely uber popular in biker bars. Anyone who has visited very many biker bars will know exactly what I'm talking about. If anyone has seen that old Dolly Parton and Burt Reynolds movie about a whorehouse in Texas, well this is what the song is about. Not the movie of course but the "Chicken Ranch" as it's been famously dubbed. The rhythm of the song should be recognizable to almost anyone imo but that could just be because it's a song I've personally heard so many damn times although it has appeared in a number of popular films including the blockbuster "Armageddon" as well as an overly syndicated Geico motorcycle insurance commercial. ====================================

Write-Up: Yeah... I think I've heard this one more times than I'd have liked. Obviously it has a catchy summertime beat but the best thing about it is clearly the video. So many girls in bikini's that I almost can't stand it. I'm not typically a perv but I have a certain limit of skin exposure that I can tolerate before I lose focus on anything else. It's actually one of the biggest reasons I hate going to the beach tbh. It's far too frustrating for me to process all of that sexual innuendo. I mean don't get me wrong, I don't think girls should cover up or anything like that but it's completely ridiculous with some of the string and revealing clothing girls wear these days. Write-Up: Finishing up this block of tunes is a song that I promise everyone you don't even need to like to find the chorus catchy. It's an anthem of sorts and I'm not 100% certain if it was meant to be serious or a joke song. It sounds quite comedic to me as I naturally find "trailer park life" comical. Been there done that so I know of the interesting scenarios that are sometimes commonplace but maybe that's why I feel like this song is sort of a parody. The beat is the best thing about the song imo. ====================================

Write-Up: Definitely not my favorite Soundgarden song. In fact I believe there are several better choices here tbh. Even so, the fans are evident since there is such a high Top 100 score. Not a ton of other stuff comes to mind but this is the first I am getting familiar with the album. I don't feel very engaged much with this tune though and sort of anticipate it's ending sooner than later. This song did make it on to the band's greatest hits album so that is sort of significant I guess. Oh cool, a cover of the song was used to promote Sin City 2 and now that I think about it I kinda remember that. ====================================

Write-Up: Another choice by my wife. This is one of her favorites from the 70's and even from one of her favorite 70's bands. Me on the other hand... it's ok but not something I generally listen to. There is however a song by the Carpenters that I did personally select further up the list. This song was hot back in the day and was chosen by Rolling Stone magazine as one of the 500 greatest songs of all time. As some may imagine this song is also a popular wedding song which was actually used in an inumerable amount of ceremonies. ====================================

Write-Up: The song that kicked off this kids career to sum this one up. Yet another tune selected by my wife (that's two in a row... better make sure there isn't a 3rd or she might get mad at me lol). Anyway, this guy can harmonize pretty darn well and the beat here is just fine. I don't tend to listen but I am familiar with the summer of it's release since there are a few connected memories I have with this as background noise. Not too proud of it but do we really get to choose what is stored in our memory banks under those circumstances? Oh well. McCartney was a Disney staple appearing on a few of their pre-teen shows, most notably the Suite Life of Zack & Cody. ====================================

Write-Up: Damn she's gonna kill me lol. Bummer for her though since this is in fact the 3rd of her nominations in a row to take the dive. Certain Pop music just doesn't keep me entertained unfortunately. I can clearly hear the catchy rings in the song but I'm turned off by something indescribable for some reason. Maybe it's because I don't find Jesse J all that attractive when she clearly thinks she is or perhaps it is her overconfidence that annoys me or is it her weird dance moves? I dunno. This is something that I'd refer to when I say the term "Dance Dance Generation" which happens to be one of the most annoying generations btw. It's possible I wasn't experiencing life in such a positive way during this generation because even though there are a lot of happy sounds, a lot of them bring displeasure and anxiety. Perhaps something I should evaluate at a later date lol. ====================================

Write-Up: Ok so... I had to change the link to the music video because I just couldn't trust that it wasn't going to be a violation of the sites TOS. If you want to see it you can go check it out on youtube yourself. I will warn everyone though that the video depicts death and tragedy and some of the imagery might be offensive or disturbing to look at. You were warned. But yeah, this band is famous for it's affinity for gory propaganda and most of their music is tragic and melancholic. I don't recall atm who nominated this song but are you ok buddy? It's a dark trip through something I am definitely not familiar with. I mean sure, last year I had a heart attack that almost killed me but even through that I did not feel as much mortal desperation and hollow-ness as the music you find here. ====================================

Write-Up: Hmm, it seems that I once again ranked something a bit higher than I would have originally predicted. Phil Collins has some really great tunes but then the rest fall into a single category that is strongly mediocre imo. I did grow up hearing a fair portion of his work since my mother was a fan and would usually have this kind of music playing during regular house cleaning time but... most of it just didn't interest me. I wouldn't exactly call this progressive rock as I feel it might sound like but a few different resources list it as such so that is what I went with. I'm looking forward to a couple of his other songs in this ranking, anyone got any guesses what they might be? ====================================

Write-Up: So much positive support for this song... and so I gotta be that a** that goes against the grain. I do not like this song at all. I don't really care if a blind guy overcame odds to create some music. I mean.. I'm not a total a** so I can acknowledge that it was a feat for sure but this music just isn't for me. I can't relax to it, sing to it or even reminisce about it. The beat is fine but I'd skip this on the radio almost every time I heard it. It isn't that it's Funk either because there are some decent Funk tunes I like. I think I may have already mentioned this somewhere but I have a natural disinterest in anything this guy does just because I used to get picked on as a kid and one of the names frequently used to troll me was "Stevie Wonder". As an adult the name doesn't bother me so much but it's tough to shake all of the bad memories as a kid when they are attached to music such as this. ====================================

Write-Up: Meh... another popular song on the charts but it's too blah imo. It's been used in a bunch of other media over the years and to some it's an iconic love song. While it is kinda recognizable I would never agree that it is iconic. The song is Dan Hill's biggest hit of his career and it was covered by many other bands to include Tina Turner, Barry Manilow, Bonnie Tyler, Dream Theater, Donny Osmond and Rod Stewart in no particular order. I kinda chuckled as this is the first I've ever heard of AOL Radio's 100 worst songs ever but this made that list in 2010. The only reason it sits on this list tbh is as filler. I had to come up with 200 70's songs and it wasn't that easy to bring in all the best hits so I kept a list of the highest charting tunes whether I liked them or not just in case I needed to fill the list. Not a whole lot else to say about this one though. ====================================

Write-Up: The 70th 70's song to take the dive here. I actually don't mind this one though. It sits nice on an easy listening playlist if you are ever in the mood for that kind of music even though it is technically Pop Rock. Many of you who are Marvel movie fans might recognize this straight from Guardians of The Galaxy Vol. 2 as it did appear on one of Starlord's mixed tapes and is also included on the soundtrack for the film. The song would end up being the only song the band would have that made it onto the charts. That makes sense to me since most of their other work I've heard is largely forgettable imo. ====================================

Write-Up: Ouch. Four 70's songs in a row. If we keep this up the 70's will be the first decade down in no time lol. Anyway, I had never actually heard this song before this ranking. I don't typically listen to Country Rock but it's tolerable although it isn't all that catchy imo. I will say though that the guitar play is pretty stellar here and we even get 2 guitar solos that are pretty cool. Among the band's fans this is known as one of the most favorite of their portfolio. I never really played too much Rock Band since I'm a Guitar Hero junkie but it was available as the final song in career mode. It's appearance there kickstarted some newfound popularity for the band in the late 2000's I guess. Holy crap! There is a 20 minute version of this included on their concert album "Bring It Back Alive". ====================================
