You know I'm lucky to live in the UK and at this point to be out of work as I get all my health care on the NHS for nothing(including dental). The only thing I don't get is a eye test but that's nothing. The stuff I've had done would have cost a fortune at this point, even more so with my teeth. Every cloud and all that.

Well dude...its kinda your fault for not taking care of your teeth and regular check ups. I hate yell you so but...its true. Brush, brush, brush, and always floss! So what kinda work needs to be done? Oh, and avoid soda...that shit is like acid for your teeth.

Why do you assume so much? Bad genetics and accidents can happen too you know.

No assumptions are necessary. The TC literally said in the first post that he hadn't been to the dentist in years. It's his own damn fault.

Regular annual/biannual checkups are cheap. Regular checkups are much cheaper than not going to the dentist for years and then needing a lot of work done to fix your teeth that have been neglected all those years.

Another thing is that insurance will almost always pay 100% of the cost of a regular checkup. They will only pay a small percentage of restorative fixes caused by neglect.

It's why you need to visit the dentist regularly, tbh... which I admonish even as I realize I haven't gone in a few years. Partly because my company decided to stop offering a dental plan.

I haven't been to the dentist for a few years largely because of doctor burnout. I get so tired of going to three different doctors all the time that I totally conveniently forget to go to the dentist. :F

I mean you can not go the dentist for years, still take care of your teeth and still have shitty luck so yeah it's a assumption thanks.

It literally isn't, there are plenty of things the dentist does that you can't. No matter how well you take care of your teeth they are still going to go to shit if you don't visit the dentist regularly to take care of them. And even ignoring that the dentist is going to notice something earlier if you go regularly. Like if you have a cavity that requires a filling vs. a cavity that requires an extraction. Fillings are cheap, extractions and expensive.

If he said he went to the dentist regularly then you would have a leg to stand on, but you don't. You are just flat out wrong.

According to the docs, its a combo of shit genetics + not going in for routine checkups.

Yeah the dentist harbinger of doom told me this is pretty much gonna be my life. Routine checkups every three months after they fix me this time assuming shit goes smoothly. Part of me believes this is a way to suck my money away

Oh man. Just last year I went to the dentist for the first time in ages to get two molars (or what was left of them checked out) Back when I was a freshman in college, both molars had some root canal work done that was never actually finished. And eventually they broke.

Anywho I finally went to get them checked and I remember how painful it was to have to pay out of pocket, even with insurance and all. I think it was the first time I truly felt I had crossed over into adulthood.

So you have your own x-ray machine? If not, then there is one thing right there that the dentist can do that you cannot. He can take x-rays. You can only see the surface of your teeth. You cannot see what is going on below the surface.

You can only see a cavity once it has gotten bad enough to start causing pain. A dentist can see a cavity before it gets that bad.

I fractured a tooth, and many trips later, I need an implant for $7,000 before insurance. I have been living in teeth hell for months while I wait to spring for my most expensive plan so it can only be $3500

Fuck the United States. Pretty sure they can 3D print the damn implant for a few bucks, give or take. Service should not be that much.

Will they cover it if it happened before you had the insurance? Usually it doesn't work that way.

Not going to the dentist is like not flossing, you're just *kinda* taking care of your teeth.

If it were that easy, competition would likely have lowered the price because companies would try to undercut each other especially since they're dealing with a massive margin.
