A student organization at Marquette University is asking "white folks" to "STOP CALLING THE COPS" and instead try to resolve threatening situations on their own.
If the matter can't be handled independently, Marquette Empowerment suggests consulting friends, neighbors, and professional mediators before contacting law enforcement.

A Marquette University student group is imploring white folks to STOP CALLING THE COPS, suggesting instead that students take matters into their own hands when they feel threatened.

In a post on its Facebook page addressed specifically to white folks, Marquette Empowerment offers some handy steps to follow if you feel the urge to call the police, attaching a poster listing five alternatives to calling the police.

The poster outlines the steps to ask yourself before calling the police, posing a series of questions to ask oneself before involving law enforcement in a given situation, starting with Is this merely an inconvenience to me?

If the answer is no, I need to respond, the flyer instructs individuals to consider whether they can handle this on my own, perhaps by trying to talk-out [the matter] with the person.

If talking things out isnt a feasible option, the document says one should first consider whether there is a friend, neighbor, or someone else who could be called for help. In the event that professional assistance is required, it suggests pursuing mediation to talk through whats happening or calling an emergency response hotline.

Only after all of those options have been exhausted, the guide says, should one contact the policeand even then it exhorts students to make sure they understand how involving the police could impact me and the other person.

The bottom of the poster contains a link to a resource guide put out by an organization called Showing Up For Racial Justice, DC.

Marquette Empowerment bills itself as the schools ONLY intersectional feminist organization for women, men, and nonbinary folks who strive to combat injustices concerning ALL PEOPLE, explaining that it focuses on issues such as misogyny, transphobia, heterosexism, slut-shaming, victim blaming, cissexism, classism, homophobia, xenophobia, Islamophobia, ableism, racism, and any other form of bigotry.

The group has also expressed pro-abortion sympathies, such as in a January tweet declaring that Abortion is healthcare.

Iit is normal and okay to have an abortion. You can talk about it publicly if you want to, the post adds, saying, We support you. We stand with you.

Neither Marquette Empowerment nor university spokespersons immediately responded to Campus Reforms requests for comment. This article will be updated if and when a response is received from either.

That's correct, these posters certainly aren't advising people to not call the police in emergency situations (and they say as much) as several people here are eagerly interpreting them to.

There are a lot of posters like this around DC, and the point is really simply to encourage people to not immediately escalate little things (particularly non-criminal things) by calling the police, given that the police have a tendency to ratchet up the intensity and danger in a situation when, let's just say it, people of color are involved.

The posters are meant to discourage people from calling the police any time they see a non-white person existing in a place they might not expect, not to ignore crimes when they see them happening.

I dunno. Ive never called the cops, and if I did it would be because a crime had just been comitted or I was fearful for the safety of myself or others.

Two of my friends and I were swimming in the neighborhood pool and someone called the cops on us. We were the only ones in the pool area. Not sure who it was, but it was definitely someone in one of the houses nearby or someone who walked by.

A poster directed at black people, women, LGBT, Muslims, etc. wouldn't have to be related to illegal activity such as fake rape or hate crime stories to be seen as highly inappropriate on campus. But I think even analogies involving that kind of illegal activity are still relevant. Most white people don't call the cops for BS reasons, most women would never make up a rape story, most people in any demographic group have no interest it making up hate crime stories.

The poster presents the issue as a epidemic, but fails to put the problem into any context besides " did you see the news?"

You also have to know your audience. How many students walking by and seeing this poster are the type to call the cops frivously, and would benefit from seeing this poster? Its "preaching to the choir" at best and completely condescending at worst.
