Ahhh, this brings back memories. Shadowrun Returns is the very first game I bought on Steam (yea I'm a late starter).

Echoing what a lot of Shadowrun players have said, this game is more or less a tech demo to show what the devs have to offer in future installments. It's rather basic and barebones, but still a decent squad based game nonetheless. It convinced me to get the next two sequels and I have no regrets.

The combat may be similar to XCOM but in essence it's an RPG game where you travel around talking to people and looking for clues to solve a murder case with some combat in between, unlike XCOM where you build your base/squad and send them off on missions. Hell you can even talk your way out of fights most of the time, which usually is the better choice since you don't earn experience by kills but rather by your actions.

Be warned though, there's a lot of text in all 3 games (it's very lore heavy) so if you're those run & gun players, this might not be the game for you.

Combat & customization: XCOM wins

Edit: Btw, there's actually a mod in the 3rd game (Shadowrun Hong Kong) which recreates the 1st game with a better engine and adds more content to it.
