I agree his response is a little odd and sounds like somebody trying to cover their tracks in an "Oh shit" moment. I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt in the long run, whether it's because he didn't know, or because he earnestly thought it wouldn't be a big deal and didn't realize how people might feel. Like, I'm willing to give him a bit of a pass on the latter because, while slimy and wrong, Rance isn't quite the same thing as if it were a murderer, serial rapist, somebody accused multiple times of assault, etc. I think people are often quick to blanket "A sex offender is a sex offender," but I think there needs to be some consideration of the individual acts/crimes.

If he's not being fully honest, he should be, but like I implied before, I think he's kind of screwed with the "CRUCIFY HIM!" mob regardless, and lines have already been drawn. People that shrugged it off are gonna continue to shrug it off, people that want his head on a pike are going to want his head on a pike. I don't feel anything he could say, short of "I DID IT ON PURPOSE," could change any minds.

If it were somebody who has continually assaulted people, or who has continually preyed on kids, etc., then yeah, I could see people in the audience feeling uncomfortable about somebody like that potentially being around them. Those are the kind of things that probably should keep people from more public/spotlighted jobs
