Ohio State Psychology Researchers have said there's a surprising correlation between longetivity between atheists and religious faith..they said that church going god people live up to 4 years LONGER than non-believing atheists, this according to 1000 obituaries published across the United States!!

They said the study insist there is a merit to the connection: ppeople with religiuos affiliations often volunteer and engage in social activities throughout their life, something tied to a longer life.

But socializing appeared to boost longetivity by a year at most suggestiong other religious elements such as low alcohol intake is another factor

Laura allace, a doctoral student in psychology said there's a lot of benefit in religious affiliation.

Dr Baldwin way, an associate professor who co-authored this study said the findings may sound harsh to athiests but you can't argue the statistics as there's persuasive evidence of religious participation and how long a person lives

Religious people lived almost 10 years longer than atheists but it shrunk to 6 years when they took gender and marital status into account

The reason religious people live longer is how they restrict unhealthy practices from alcohol to drug use and having sex with many partners as athiests are seen as wild "radicals" who abuse everything christians don't partake in.

Do you think agree that Religious People live longer than Atheists?

Religion is only one factor. Hereditary, stress, diseases, etc.

Well, placebos are a real thing and being comforted by the thought of a magical space wizard every night would do wonders for those who have "faith".

I might accept the sample size, but it seems like a very easy sample to bias. Moreover, it doesn't sound like they corrected for a number of pretty obvious other variables, like region and socioeconomic status, so I'd be wary of the conclusion.

I guess, if that's what studies show.

How did they define Christians?
That's a huge swath of different levels of faith and actual "go to church every week" vs. "yeah, we buy presents for Christmas..."
Plus people who aren't particularly religious most of their adult life and become more so once elderly. You know, since apparently they just looked at obituaries, so they got the "end result" only.

Don't trust this study at all yet.

I could believe it to the extent that Christians are more likely to refrain from certain high-risk behaviors but I also kinda question the methodology here.

You're not really in a position to criticize anything that anybody puts out, though. >_>

That's not really a matter of agreement, its either true or not, and the only evidence i've seen either way is this one study. I'm not convinced by one study. If a whole bunch of them came out all saying the same thing, then sure, its hard to argue with.

Now I'd buy the alcohol and social support stuff as a factor, but that's not purely a religion thing.

The implication seems to point that those trends are more prevalent among Christians than atheists, which is kinda driving the claim.
