dont you think it's arrogant to bash experienced well-regarded authors? youre just starting out, so you should accept feedback and learn as much as possible. that way youll become better faster

It could be perceived that way, but I really genuinely think those authors are bad writers. I don't find anything good about their work. I can't take it seriously after reading classic lit. I'm reading Swann's Way right now, and my God it's just so much better written. I aspire to write like Proust, not Sanderson or King or Martin. I'm not saying no one can like them, but I don't and never will. Their work does nothing for me because I find beauty in language and words themselves as well as the story they tell.

It's not just the blood thing, it's most of the paragraph

I can get overwriting certain paragraphs but that was borderline unreadable. My mind kept telling me as I read it that the sentence should be over at that point, but it just kept carrying on. Like out of this;

A sweeping blade of flashing steel riveted from the massive barbarians hide enameled shield as his rippling right arm thrust forth, sending a steel shod blade to the hilt into the soldiers vital organs. The disemboweled mercenary crumpled from his saddle and sank to the clouded sward, sprinkling the parched dust with crimson droplets of escaping life fluid.

...only the bolded really works for me. Everything else just keeps running on because it unnecessary extends itself to the point where it's annoying to read

Shouldn't the impact of the word (blood) be defined by what's happening surrounding the concept? You don't need adjectives to make it impactful or meaningful

Blood, blood, blood, blood, blood, blood. Why on earth would you use the same word to describe something over and over again? Synonyms exist for a f***ing reason.

Because otherwise it sounds overwritten.

The same reason why you it gets tedious to read "______," said person adverbly over and over again in dialogue.

I find "he said" type dialogue exchanges mind numbingly tedious. I think most modern prose is actually underwritten. That's my preference. I like long, intricate sentences with varied vocabulary.

"Long, intricate sentences with varied vocabulary" is also an easy go to for the pretentious unskilled writer who thinks more writing=better writing and therefore fills their work with purple prose with story concepts that present themselves as deep but are actually shallower than pulp fantasy, so don't be surprised if your pining for it makes people project other things on to you and your writing.

Really, those two sentences are fine as ideas

Barbarian attacks soldier (by drawing his sword from behind his shield)
Dead soldier falls off horse (and sprays the ground with his blood)

But those ideas are hopelessly obfuscated by the delivery. The priorities in writing should be ideas, then clarity, then entertainment

How about (and this is just a shitty spitball)

With a mighty cry, the barbarian drew his blade, and forcefully sheathed it in the soldier before him. His foe gurgled momentarily before sliding out of his saddle, bleeding like a fountain.

I think the whole concept is stupid, as I hate high fantasy as a genre, but it could be spruced up with a more complex sentence structure and words that give it more of an identity to stand out from the tons of other samey stories.

Amateur tip: you should write the sentence in whatever fashion fits. Use the flow of a sentence to accompany the events in the story or the way a character speaks, etc.

A cool example of that, along with other zany things, is found in House of Leaves. There is a section of the book that has short sentences that are spaced out to have them be on their own pages. This means you flip through pages quickly as you read them and that pace matches the frantic action that is occurring in the story. Something like that specifically is more of a gimmick, but using short sentences with straightforward wording will let the reader go through them quickly and picks up the pace or emphasizes some of the wording more than usual.

Ok, but stay with me here.
Good writing isn't defined one way or the other by long, intricate sentences and varied vocabulary.
Length of sentence and use of vocabulary is a stylistic choice and can be executed well or poorly.
The greats are not greats because of their sentence structure, but because they did it well.

Good writing can be short and simplistic. Good writing can also be long and complex.

Bad writing can be long and complex.
Bad writing can also be short and simplistic.

You're also calling a lot of popular authors bad for using the other style, and indirectly calling fans of those authors dumb for liking them.

Having preferences is fine. You went a bit farther than that.
