How do you write a realistically super intelligent character, someone like Tony Stark with all the jargon and knowledge and make it interesting?

If it were me, what I'd do is somehow focus their intellect in a way that it leaves flaws in other aspects of their life. Perhaps their intelligence is very specialized, and there are other areas of knowledge about which they're completely ignorant; or their intelligence comes at the cost of some sort of mental/physical problems.

I meant more in how they portray their intelligence, in a way that doesn't seem like the writer hasn't just browsed wikipedia and thesaurus.com.

Oh. Well - maybe it's just me but "interesting" didn't really convey that to me.

I guess it'd be a matter of "show, don't tell." Describe them doing things which show that they know a lot about something - maybe it's a complex thing only an expert can do, or a more simple thing done with finesse. As far as not sounding like the writer just glanced at a wiki page...iunno, you might just need to do some actual research. Enough to describe those actions and the results, at least.

Not really stuff I've needed to consider for my own writing, but that's the best idea that comes to mind.

random excerpt from my novel to further explain what i mean about prose

Brian mulled over the idea before storing it away with the vast collection of concerns in his mind. Nodding, he took his suit jacket and placed it over his red T-shirt, foregoing the dress code. If the situation was as urgent as it sounded, nobody would care about a tie.

For a moment, out of the corner of his eye, he caught sight of a painting one of the few in the house that Sherry hadnt made herself. It was a simple painting of a snowy, dark looking forest with an orange light in the distance.

Why am I thinking of that night?

Every day, hed look behind his shoulder, but nothing ever came for him. There were no dark, lurking shadows seeking blood. Crash had all but vanished ever since that bloody night, with the report on the deaths of Senator Dominic Sutherland and his wife being the last trace of The Black Capes influence.

this is kind of lengthy for a guy expressing his thoughts very early on in the book; I fail to see how purple prosing this would make it better. It conveys ideas, has a few embellishment words for emphasis (e.g. "bloody night", "vast collection"), and makes the point about the perspective character being paranoid/anxious

I'm not calling the above passage perfect but I can't imagine approaching what I've written with weighty prose that just slogs everything down. My novel's entire purpose is to build multiple plotlines and have each of them ignite in really catastrophic ways, and a lot of time is spent in that setup.

A lot of writers do that. Why would a writer doing that make the build-up process even slower by throwing adjectives in at every given turn while simultaneously damaging the impact of their conclusions by having those also be defused with cool words I found in a dictionary?

I'll agree that passage doesn't really need to be purple'd up to be better, but the first paragraph also states that things are urgent - the character has a clear agenda they need to tend to, so he isn't gonna spend time dawdling.

Why would a writer doing that make the build-up process even slower by throwing adjectives in at every given turn while simultaneously damaging the impact of their conclusions by having those also be defused with cool words I found in a dictionary?

Going purple sparingly wouldn't severely damage the pacing. Certainly not telling you how to write your story, but this part of your post makes it sound like you think purple prose has to be an all-or-nothing deal.

(EDIT: I hope I don't have to point out that I'm not talking about small instances of gogg-tier purple prose. Just, y'know - jazzing the descriptions up a bit.)

Writing my 11th book right now. Serious question: how do you write about your frustrations with society without coming off as pretentious?

Apparently everyone hates a Holden Caulfield type of character, but I want to make a dystopian world overrun by technology, based on our current society, which is obsessed with virtual experiences over real ones.

Fair enough. So introduce the themes themselves, but let the reader decide how they feel about them?

Also, any other good dystopian books I should read besides Brave new world? I've already read 1984 and Fahrenheit 451.

Just keep in mind I say this as someone who doesn't really read all that much at all anymore, and never went much into literature to begin with.

It's better to have a character show their frustration toward a society through rebellious or disrespectful attitudes than to have them monologue or soliliquize. It's boring to read about a character info dumping their beliefs and it treats the reader like a fool who can't tell what a character is like without being explicitly told.

Oh, I agree. I'm about 5,000 words into my story and I'm not doing anything like preaching. Just telling how the world is reliant on technology for everything. No one has intimate relationships anymore because they can get everything they need from technology and all entertainment is simple and bite sized. Everything is artificial, including births, food, trees, everything organic replaced out of convenience. The main character doesn't like this, but is painted as an outlier who wishes things were like they used to be. Recycling centers exist where books and other objects deemed useless are burned and converted into fuel for the city. He's not preechy, just depressed and obsessed with the past mostly.

Pick up the third book in the His Dark Materials trilogy and scan through the latter half until the book's "skeptic" character delivers a totally-not-an-author-tract speech about atheism - or more anti-theism, really - that goes on for at least a full page. Read the speech. Internalize it.

Do the exact opposite of that speech.

I think that's more a philosophy book iirc, not dystopian. And preaching isn't what I want to do, so even though my character is disappointed by the way the world is, I've made it a point to say he doesn't blame or resent the people for the way they are, nor does he shame them. He blames the convenience of technology itself and understands that the people are merely a product of the society they live in, which I believe is true of any society, real or fictional.

Definitely. I have a deep respect for anyone that reads, no matter their preference. There's something magical about books and their power to entertain and enthrall, to transport our minds to different worlds through text alone.

Same. I'm going to buy Brave New World today for research purposes. The book I'm writing is pretty ambitious in terms of scope (three "books" with two parts each, about 120-150,000 words total) and I want inspiration beyond my initial prompt of noticing how over reliant society seems to be on technology.

Pick a Philip K. Dick book at random and it'll probably be dystopian in some way. He's really fond of having Earth get destroyed/crippled and people migrate to other planets, with the stories focusing on some way in which people are dealing with it.
