All the picks are nice, though I kind of wish Shadow Hearts was on that list.... makes me want to play those games again.

I would probably say Golden Sun, but considering that it would pick up from the DS title, I'd probably not even bother to buy the new game.

From the list, maybe Castlevania if it was a more traditional 2D one.

More generally, though:
-Monster Rancher
-Mega Man Legends, Battle Network, and Star Force
-Darkstalkers
-Battletanx
-Cruis'n series (although the Wii one sucked)

And I still really want to see a KIU2, even if it went console. And I kinda wish Zombies Ate My Neighbors had become a series.

As much as Id like to see a new Castlevania or Suikoden game, I have no confidence in the ability of Konami to make one. So, I went with Advance Wars.

That was my initial thought before I even saw the list. I was like, "I'd like to see Suikoden make a comeback, but it would have to be developed by someone other than Konami, because otherwise it would be absolute hot garbage."

At this point, I'm more in the mindset that I want old franchises I used to love to die forever and never come back, because I reflexively assume any new title in a beloved older franchise will probably be terrible, and will absolutely shit on all of the good memories I have of the previous games.

Hell, I've gone from considering Bungie and BioWare two of my favorite development studios of all time about 10 years ago to actively wishing they'd both close down tomorrow and never blight the marketplace with another game again. Which was remarkably quick turnaround (the previous winner of that honor, Square, took about 20 years and a ill-advised merger to pull off the same feat).

But the old games still exist. Nothing is preventing you from enjoying them. Outside of outdated mechanics, and incompatibility. Example for me. Parasite Eve was great, But The 3rd Birthday was trash. But I still try and go back every year around Christmas to play through Parasite Eve.

But the old games still exist. Nothing is preventing you from enjoying them.

People always say this, but it has literally never been a true statement of how human brains work.

Like it or not, negative experiences can absolutely retroactively color our memories of older things. As an extreme example, it's why so many people feel like they can't watch the older work of actors or comedians who have been getting outed as sexual abusers - you may have loved the Cosby Show as a kid, but if you watch it today, on some level you're always thinking about what he did. A lot of wrestling fans have trouble watching old Chris Benoit matches, in spite of his in-ring ability and prior performances not being altered in any way by the fact that he murdered his wife and child. But even on a much smaller scale, the dissatisfaction you feel from a terrible game can easily color your perception of previous games, even if you once loved them. The ending of Mass Effect 3 absolutely does weaken everything leading up to it. The backstory of the 343 Halo games does weaken plot and characterization established in the original Halo games. Yes, the prequel trilogy really does ruin a lot of the presence and majesty of Darth Vader when you go back and watch Empire Strikes Back. And so on.

Does that mean a terrible game (or movie, or book, etc) will automatically make you hate the games that came before? Usually no. And plenty of people can still enjoy the things they used to in spite of the new thing dragging it down. But it CAN detract, however slightly, from the overall experience. Especially if the newer work alters the characterization of previous characters, or changes established backstory or setting details in ways that are contrary to what you loved about the thing in the first place.

And yes, you CAN ignore the new game (or whatever) and pretend it doesn't exist, but on some level you're still aware of it, and it still has an effect.

And when it comes to games with a running story (like, say, Mass Effect or Dragon Age), a later story being utter crap can absolutely make you less interested in replaying previous games retroactively. Why play through 100+ hours of Mass Effect again when you know disappointment is waiting for you at the end? Why play the Dragon Age games when you know Inquisition is waiting for you like a bloated awkward mess (and the Trespasser DLC basically renders the entirety of Inquisition functionally meaningless anyway)?

In a sense, it's similar to the reason why so many people get annoyed with the "It was all a dream!" ending to stories. It makes you feel like the narrative just wasted all of your time.

It's about separating the art from the artist. John Lennon use to beat his first wife and abandoned his first son but his music is still held in high regard. Same thing about Michael Jackson and all of his controversies. You don't have to love the person to enjoy the work. You could even hate the person but acknowledge they did quality work when it comes down to it.

When it comes to sequel media you have to ask yourself these questions: Was it good enough to warrant a sequel? Is the creator good enough to make a sequel? Should there even be a sequel?

Star Wars didn't need a expanded universe full of bullshit and contradictions. Episode IV stands well enough on its own that it could've "and probably should've" ended right there. But demand for more ultimately watered everything down for the sake of being a cash cow.

Mass Effect hardly had a good main plot to begin with, and it became more apparent as the series moved forward. It was nothing more than space marine chosen one universe revolves around you fluff. Your character was always going to save the day even if you intentionally fuck up (to a degree).

The enjoyment I got out of it was through other characters and what was going on around your character. Would I ever play the series again? No. Once was enough and I set out to do what I wanted to do in the first place.
Even if it had 150 endings or ending slides explaining my actions across three games I still wouldn't do it. Whatever ending I ended up with is how that story ended for me. Example, I really like Fallout: New Vegas but I've only beaten it once. I've played around in it multiple times since beating it but I've only beat it once. Why is that? Because I did what I set out to do and ended up with the ending I felt I deserved.

Mass Effect example from finding out about the Reapers I set out that I'm going to destroy them. In the end I destroyed them mission accomplished.

Not even. Dream endings/unreliable narrator endings are typically a cop out when the writer ends up in the corner with no way out. A bad sequel is when the writer is proven a hack or the company managing the media only sees money. The world is full of media with sequels that are atrocious. It doesn't stop people from enjoying the older media and newer generations from discovering it. People still hold Godfather 1/2 in extremely high regard but nobody gives a shit about the third one. Hell people hold Neverending Story in high regards but say nothing of the horrible sequels.

Network TV is pretty bad about wasting viewers time in series. But its all evident when you realize everything is written for the commercial, and to keep leading you on to draw things out beyond necessary. This could probably be fixed if the media in question had a set number of episodes/sequels/books to work with and once the end was reached that was it. Granted a writer can still shit the bed but at least they didn't shit all the way to the breakfast table.

There are so many series that haven't seen a new entry in many years. Here is what I'd love to see come back:

Parasite Eve (The 3rd Birthday was an embarrassment)
Suikoden
Wild Arms (I know there is a mobile game coming, but I think it has all of the characters from the past games)
Panzer Dragoon
Shadow Hearts
King's Field
Echo Night
Arc the Lad
Onimusha
El Shaddai
Dino Crisis
Gargoyle's Quest
Shining Force
Phantasy Star
Thunder Force
Maximo
OutRun
The Suffering
TimeSplitters
Half-Life
Gauntlet
Bushido Blade
Grandia
Ecco the Dolphin
Ogre Battle
Tactics Ogre
Chrono
Streets of Rage
Vectorman
Mega Man Legends
Resident Evil Outbreak
Silent Hill (like 1-4, not the shitty games that Team Silent wasn't involved with).

Out of the choices given, I went with Parasite Eve. Loved the first one. Didn't get very far into the second one for some reason, I didn't like the changes they had made to the whole game and couldn't get into it. I'd give it another try but 20 years later, I feel like it didn't really stand the test of time.
Castlevania was my second pick.
Didn't give it enough thought to come up with series I'd want to come back that weren't in the choices, but I'm sure if I look up my old SNES and Playstation favorites, I could easily find a bunch.

maybe they mean make the games like dragon age origins. (though having 2's combat, and 3's increase in character race/class would be the best combination)

Damn, this just made me think of Kingdoms of Amalur. I want another one of those! I loved the first one but.. it lacked something. Closure? A sequel to expand the story?
