I needed to catch up on fifteen airing shows, and I started watching five other shows at the same time too because I'm an idiot, so I haven't had anything to post about lately because I haven't finished anything. Still, I just got through what I guess was a mini-arc in Sword Art Online S2, Excalibur. It's probably my second favorite part of the anime so far, mostly because GGO and the fairy arc both had huge problems that Excalibur managed to avoid.

I liked how it was just the Kirito Harem (plus Klein) on a random quest where the only stakes were the virtual world maybe getting messed up. It was a nice change of pace. Everyone had a cool moment, too. Klein getting trolled was also great. I thought he'd at least get a virtual girlfriend but lol it was Thor in disguise, have a hammer you can't use instead. Also, the whole time I was watching, I kept thinking about how unfair it was that a big world-changing quest was only experienced by seven people. Everyone else must be so confused about what happened.

I'll try to watch the final SAO arc over the weekend.

HeroAca episode 44

Alright it wasn't QUITE as epic as I wanted it to be but they did a fair enough job with Dark Shadow vs Moonfish. Great detail with Tokoyami tearing up while in the state. And Broji gets his time to shine as well!

Toga vs Tsuyu and Uraraka was great, I think they pulled it off super well.

Man. I'm not really surprised you enjoyed it since your taste is similar to other people that did, but I really hated the Excalibur arc. Most likely my least favorite part of the series.

It doesn't do the blatantly bad things that some of the other arcs do, but from my perspective there's also absolutely nothing to like about the Excalibur arc, which is a greater sin in my eyes.

Hero Aca episode 44

Ok Toga's fighting style (don't think we've actually seen her quirk yet?) actually really makes me nauseous and I hope she exits this show sooner rather than later. This actually could be a problem for me going forward though because like this is actually even harder to me to watch than a certain other anime from last year with notoriously difficult to watch scenes.

Otherwise a good episode though. And there's not really any problem with Toga's scenes either...it just makes me sick to watch.

I do like this Mr. Compress fellow though.

Week 5 Rankings

1. Steins;Gate 0

2. Megalo Box
3. Hinamatsuri
4. Full Metal Panic! Invisible Victory
5. Food Wars S3-2

6. My Hero Academia S3
7. Hisone to Maso-tan
8. Amanchu! Advance
9. Cardcaptor Sakura: Clear Card

10. Sword Art Online Alternative: Gun Gale Online
11. Darling in the FranXX
12. High School DxD Hero
13. Kakuriyo no Yadomeshi
14. Last Period
15. Golden Kamuy
16. Comic Girls

17. Uma Musume: Pretty Derby (TV)
18. Rokuhoudou Yotsuiro Biyori
19. Record of Grancrest War

Drop Line
20. WotaKoi (5)
21. Piano no Mori (TV) (5)

Points of Note

Darling in the FranXX needs to do something quickly or it might start to tumble more in the rankings. Individually good episodes are not enough right now, it needs to push the story along now even at the expensive of character.

MHA3 has had a string of really good episodes, but so far the overall packages of Food Wars and Megalo Box still have it behind. MHA3 is gaining (at least on Food Wars) but slower than I thought it would given on how just "okay" I thought the previous cour of Food Wars was. Megalo Box though has pushed out extremely good episodes and I think the gap between it and other shows has gotten wider. I think it's closer to Steins;Gate 0 than the next show is to it.

GGO has revealed some "really?" elements to the show. I still think the gunplay sequences and the way they actually use the game world and rules within the game as some key parts to the show to be really great. I also like Llenn a lot. I do think that the whole thing with Pitou is like one of those things where if it's true that's pretty dumb... but if it's not true... that's also dumb? I don't know it's like one of those things where I kind of don't want it but maybe the show needs something like that?

As for the drops this week. WotaKoi is trying to inject comedy into situations in unnatural ways. Like take a good comedy like Hinamatsuri where the jokes have good situational awareness or buildup. It also uses the characters personalities well in ways that make sense. I think a lot of the laughs in WotaKoi are not authentic and some of the more serious moments are somewhat baffling. More like it tries to force the action too much by not understanding putting something in that might have been funny in another show is funny here. But I still think the most damaging part of the show is the poor animation. Like it was super noticiable in episode 5 where shots just linger for too long and nothing happens in a lot of shots where stuff is going on. Other shows like Golden Kamuy also have kind of bad production values, but it makes up for it in other areas.

Piano Forest is just... a nowhere show? That's all I can do to explain it. It's something where I think the show is probably okay, but stuff has just been so predictable and it doesn't have any level of actual engagement for the audience.

Without spoiling anything directly, check under the tags if you want your answer pyre.

Toga is a very common presence later on, though probably not much for the rest of this season. That said, this aspect of her "fighting style" isn't going to be a major factor with her moving forward, it's just establishment for later reveals.

Oh are you really iffy when it comes to blood?

Sort of, but it's not quite that straightforward. I was totally okay with Stain, for example, and blood was a major part of his character also. I don't totally understand it but it's sort of specific to these suction pump things that she has. Like the idea of someone's blood being drained is very uncomfortable for me to watch, but it's also not just that. I think it has something to do with the mechanical nature of these pumps, as I'm also mostly fine with watching things like vampires, for example. As I said I don't really get it entirely--it's an almost purely instinctual response, but that's how it is.

It's not just here though either. For example every once in a while the building I work in has blood drives in the main lobby, and I'll take a longer, less direct route to my office that avoids the main lobby just because I feel sick to my stomach even being in the same room.

Also if it does end up a problem (which based on LtM's comment I think it probably won't be?) an option could be for me to switch to the manga. I think the loss of full motion will shut off whatever part of my brain is going into overdrive at this.

The bad guys

I'm not sure how much I buy that a human organization would lean so hard on the EXTERMINATION side of things, or that this is a real organization that plainly exists but the MC questioned the idea of ghouls in the first chapter

But hey whatever it's some fine battle shounen shlock for now. This next arc seems a lot cooler

Finally went and read all of Land of the Lustrous up to the most recent chapter.

Man do I ever hope this gets another season. Kind of amazing how much it can grip you in such a short time. That said, the manga is a monthly release with a weekly chapter length, and only just now about 3 chapters ago reached the obvious natural stopping point for a second season (newest chapter was 67), so I wouldn't expect anything anytime soon.

Also, when it's in monochrome the body horror elements are waaaaay harder to handle, lol.

I finally finished the second season of Sword Art Online. That final arc, Mother's Rosario, is easily my favorite.

Man, I'm such a sucker for heartfelt/tear-jerking plots, and this one was handled really well. For starters, effectively making Asuna the main character was a huge step up from Kirito. However, the real star for me was Yuuki. She was such a fun character, and I feel like I got more attached to her in those few episodes than I have to everyone else in SAO combined. There were no creepy rapists, and no shoehorned deadly threats. It was just a beautiful story about friendship and life, so I enjoyed it a lot.

I just finished Lucky Star, and I thought it was really good! In addition to the general humor, I appreciated a lot of little gags that continued throughout the series. My favorite one was how, quite often when they cut to a new scene, the girls would be in the midst of a conversation about how smelly something was. There was never anything more to it than that but it quickly became hilarious to me for some reason. Like, before they even got to the actual focus of the scene, this silly out-of-context conversation they were having was already making me smile. Stuff like that was a nice touch. The Lucky Channel segments with the surly idol were still the best though, I was always looking forward to them at the end of the episode!

Thank you to WhiteLens for recommending this anime roughly a week ago.

I think yryr and lucky star are significantly different. Like beyond the main casts (which actually line up kinda). Lucky star is much more mundane where a lot of the humor is in timing and that a lot of it is also stuff where you think I did that or I thought about that.

Yryrs first two seasons was largely a running gag comedy with some yuri overtones . The third season was done by a different studio and had a shift away from comedy and into more relationship cute stuff.
