Seph, what would the sanctions accomplish that inspections wont?

So if you really define it in practical terms, we are essentially paying Iran billions of dollars for minimal inspections that will not uncover nuclear weapons. A leading theory right now is that Iran has been resuming their weapons development in North Korean sites, which is why the Trump Administration is timing the withdrawal as North Korea appears to be waving the white flag. Couple this turn of events with renewed sanctions and you have a legitimate window to effectively cripple Iran.

At the end of the day, the worst that this withdrawal does is allows Iran to continue developing a weapons program that was never going to be stopped, except removes billions of taxpayer dollars from their military R&D budget.

So the assumption is that Iran has not and will never operate in good faith?

47 US senators wrote an open letter to Iran, while this deal was being negotiated, warning them that the US president had no authority to make deals binding on the US without ratification in the Senate. Iran was on notice that they never had a deal with the United States, only its president.

Now, withdrawing from the deal will likely make it harder for the president to unilaterally make deals with foreign countries going forward......but that might not be a bad thing for the United States.

Do you really think that foreign countries make a sharp distinction between the two and that reneging on a deal in the latter category won't hurt the credibility of future deals in the former?

Absolutely. Foreign countries are so aware of this that the Paris climate agreement was drafted specifically to avoid going before the US Congress. That's what the French side said at the time.

There's potentially an advantage to restoring Congress's role in diplomacy in that the US Congress has built up an international reputation for being unreasonable and ideologically driven, over the past 8 years, making it a great "bad cop" to the president's "good cop."

A good deal would be a complete abolishment of the DPRK and reintegration with South Korea, or North Korea being turned into a barren wasteland.

(I assume, as this is literally John Bolton's position.)

I'm not an isolationist by any means. In fact my mantra is basically that trade can lead to world peace and that thats pretty much exactly the model we used in the Iran deal.

They were engaging with the west, entering the common market and reaping the benefits of that association. The theocracy will end without us firing a shot the same way the Soviet Union did. 40 years of isolation didnt kill them but 5 years of openness did. Theres an object lesson there.

Now you punch Iran in the nose and for what benefit? All that happens now is not only do they resume their nuclear programs, but so do Saudi Arabia and Israel. Its a an all-lose proposition.

Kim Jong Un gets a private island somewhere beautiful with the title of emperor and ironclad security guarantees from the United States, and an annual allowance of $1 billion paid for by South Korea, plus a house on Nantucket and the Congressional Medal of Honor. I know what Jakyl means, though. There is a difference between understanding and agreeing. When Seph posts a source or explains his reasons, it's usually very easy to say "oh, I get it, you think this because you're a sociopath". Understanding that brings some closure and there's always a chance that his reasoning could actually have merit even if that hasn't happened yet, so it doesn't hurt to ask.

The job of the president is to protect American citizens, not bring about world peace. The two usually go hand-in-hand, but if the choice is between having a relatively prosperous, educated civilization that is intent on destroying us with nuclear weapons or a barren, hapless skeleton of a country with no technological capabilities--then the president must choose the latter in every instance.

Hopefully it doesn't come to such a black and white decision, but I am merely making this point to illustrate how flawed Eddv's argument is to a person with my moral/political (ie, correct) philosophy.
