Shouldn't schools be teaching kids how to tell time on analog clocks at an early age? Like in elementary school?

Bullshit. There's seriously no fucking way. Big hand points to minute, small hand points to hour. Analogue clocks are still everywhere, both physically and still in culture. There are often analogue representations of clocks even on digital devices.

There has to be something additional, like they were awful Roman numeral clocks with no notches for minutes or something.

Even if they did, it'd be like teaching cursive or how to use an abacus. You wouldn't retain the information because you don't use it. And with every gizmo having a digital clock, many kids don't use it after they learn it.

I dunno... I retained this info relatively easily... unlike cursive, it's not blunt memorization of symbols. It's knowing how something functions.

I've been hearing this since the 90s. In HS it was "4th graders can't read the clock, you will be among the last people groups of graduates that knows how to tell time on analog clocks". Was complete with an article for discussion in social studies about a school changing to only digital clocks.

Weird. I can't tell time very well with a digital clock--I have to keep looking to get it to register in my mind. With an analog clock, I can visualize how much of the hour is left (or has transpired), which is much more meaningful for me. How close is the minute hand to the 12? That has meaning. Random numbers with a colon between them? Not so much.

And for a PP--studies have shown that learning cursive has benefits beyond being able to write in cursive. Our brains actually work differently when we write in cursive. (Full disclosure: I rarely write in cursive. I do often prefer to write by hand, but I print.)

I doubt it. Replacing analogue clocks with digital ones is a one-time and a fairly cheap one, while teaching every class of kids how to read analogue clocks is a recurring cost, as you'll need to do it for every class in every year.

Nobody is saying that. Analog clocks are still in use though, and digital clocks have been around for decades now but analog has been taught regardless because for one thing it's easy to learn.

Odds are you used it in some way then. If you learn something in 2nd grade and never use it until 7th, you'll forget it. Simply because it has no value.

Its not that people wont remember how to use an analog clock...they just wont need to as often. Why take time to teach something theyre really only going to use while in that school? Reading a clock is a good skill to have, sure, but how often does anyone use an analog clock anymore? Ive been out of school for years and I cant remmeber the last time I had to use one. I wear watches but I dont even use that to tell time because I have my phone on me. Thats just the new normal.

I was gonna say that's stupid but then I remembered they taught us cursive as kids and I never write in cursive today. Haven't in years probably.

I still think they should teach it though, its really simple to read an analogue clock and they're still all over the place. I wouldn't say its a necessity but when your phone dies and there's an analogue clock on the wall, its useful to know. I guess you could ask someone the time but still. Its so easy to learn how to read a clock.
