It displays my real name, but I'd prefer it to display a screen name I make up.

It's linked to your Google account, so I believe you'll need to change your Google account's real name or just create an alt.

I tried to figure this out in the past but couldn't find a real solution. I guess Youtube uses the name from your google account so if you had your real name there then you are stuck. You can add a nickname to the google account but even the it still shows your real name but changes the format to John "Anagram" Smith or John Smith(Anagram) which seems very pointless.

first, change your real name in real life, then send the documents to google, then after your name change takes effect on youtube you can just change your real life name back again

I think Google eliminated this life-hack in 2016. I was able to do it before that, but my friend tried to do it a few months ago and it didn't work out. Once he changed his real life name back to normal, his Youtube name changed again, too.

I remember there being a way to associate your youtube profile with a brand or something instead of your real name. So you can have a channel be called like "Car Repair Tips" or something like that.

I did that with my youtube profile and it doesn't have my name anywhere on it.
