I have never used cheat codes much, but there was a few times I found a bug etc and used it. The first time I can remember is in a game called Wizardry Proving grounds of the Mad Overlord. You could make Bishop characters identify #9 and it would give them a gazzilion exp (which would let you level up, and then change your class into anything you wanted).

Was awesome lol, especially since this was WAY before the internet, so you couldn't just look online for cheats etc. It was word of mouth or self discovery. The game itself was the same (you literally had to figure out what spells did, and type in the spell name etc...it was all new.)

So...what was your first cheat in a game if you have every used one?

Rare candies out the wazoo.

First thing that came to my mind as well.

Does the warp pipe in Mario 1 count as cheating? Because Im pretty sure I did that before I even beat the level the right way.

Not technically cheating but I used the turtle shell exploit for extra lives in Super Mario Bros. Probably the earliest instance I can think of.

There were more than a few games with password systems for saving progress. For some of them, with a little back-of-the-envelope decryption you could create passwords that would never happen in normal gameplay, and you could start with extra items. That became a game to me in its own right.

This. Otherwise it would be the Konami Code for Contra.

TMNT 2 on the NES

It was the game based on the arcade one, the stages were extremely long.
I showed my brother and his friend the level select (Konami) code and they grilled me for like a hour to get me to tell them the code

First thing to come to mind for me as well.

For actual cheat codes, either the Konami code in Contra or the "Justin Bailey" code in Metroid.

Probably figuring out in Gamestar Baseball how to get a swing a miss not count as a strike. Either that or beating Ninja Gaiden (NES) with a Game Genie. Both were around the same time in the late-'80s..

Unless changing the code when typing in a BASIC program from a magazine counts. I figured out what determined how fast my car could go in some text-based racing game in the old 3-2-1 Contact magazine. That would have been in the early-'80s.

Cheating... if you're counting finding Easter eggs, then the HSWWSH in Yar's Revenge. If you mean cheating to just get in-game benefits, then I don't know which game it was, but I remember the device was called the Infinity Machine. It was a cartridge you plugged into the Commodore 64, and you were supposed to get different effects depending on certain inputs. It worked, sort of, but not always.

Do stage select codes really count as cheating? I forgot about Ghosts 'n Goblins though. I don't think I ever personally beat that or the one on SNES. The Genesis one was easiest out of them.

1996, when I discovered cheat codes for Dark Forces for the PC. Cheats in a video game was a new concept to me, and a thrilling one at that, so for the next two years I played through all my new games, specifically first-person shooters, with god mode enabled.

I'd weaned myself off of cheat codes by 2000 and I nowadays I don't use them even when I'm in a bind. Though I occasionally experiment with codes/values to see how they affect a game, especially in Skyrim.
