My university a university last year got it passed that from now on bathrooms are preferred gender not gender exclusive (something I dont know how its worded. Gender neutral can use any trans can use whichever like you know?)

So I cant find videos talking much about it so Ill post this one, but warning its super bias against it and its Fox News I think
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ztzBtv7iCO0" data-time="

So however you feel about it; did you know about those pronouns and do you feel thats what should be used/will be naturally used in 20 years?

I agree with it mostky like new pronouns may arise and join our language naturally but I think yo is dumb and the idea that you can pick any pronouns you want

I'll happily use singular they for anyone who wants it. I won't use whatever made up shit some people ask for. English has been using singular they for gender-neutral for at least 600 years. It's working just fine.

Right?
I mean, I forget to use it all the time, but I try to keep myself careful about pronouns around people.

None of this bothers me, but I do get awfully nervous in public sometimes when I say sir or ma'am. I'm a polite person, but I know there will come a day where I happen upon someone who doesn't appreciate what I'll have said and then it will be awkward or bad.

Edit:
I can actually imagine a good sketch like this now, but the backlash would be crazy.

Guy: "Thank you, ma'am"
Girl: "Sir."
Guy: "Yes?"
Girl: "Thank you, sir."
Guy: "You're welcome, ma'am."
Girl: "Sir, not ma'am."

Etc;

I use gender neutral for anyone who asks it, but as a non-native speaker, it really messes with my head. Especially if it's someone I knew going by the gendered pronouns originally. So it takes me a lot of "Stop, think, then talk" and is somewhat distracting...but if it's what it takes to make them happy, so be it.

> that from now on bathrooms are preferred gender not gender exclusive

This has been debated as the deadest of dead horse, but that still never made sense to me. Bathrooms are not gender-specific, they're one of the few things that are very much biological sex-specific. They're literally optimized based on what's in your pants, regardless of gender. So it just makes sense that anyone can use either regardless of their "preferred gender", and very much based on what's in their pants require. And since it's not particularly nice to ask people what's in their pants, we should just have gender neutral bathrooms OR free for all.

But "gender preferred", or really anything related to gender (as opposed to sex/biology) and bathrooms just makes no sense.

Not really. The examples you hear tend to be highly exaggerated. What actually happens is they politely inform you you were incorrect, you make a casual apology and correct your wording, and that's the end of it.

Yeah, and if the person isn't polite about it, f*** 'em they're going to be assholes anyway.

Most of the time it goes like this:
"I was talking to him earlier and-"
"They"
"Right, I was talking to them earlier about"

No big deal.

And I am gender queer by any measure. I think this is bullshit.

To be honest, I've never actually met someone who was a raging asshole about using their preferred pronoun.
I've seen more people railing against it then anything else.

I learned in grade school in the early 90's that you're supposed to say they and them when you don't know a person's gender. I'm not going to call everyone that just out of political correctness or whatever. If I see someone who looks like a dude I'm going to assume they're a dude because they probably are a dude.

I'm open-minded and liberal about most social stuff. But like, singular they has been around for centuries. There's no need for other stuff just because you want to feel special. If you don't feel like a man or a woman, cool. We already have words for that.
