Seems a friend of mine was on the receiving end of some not so friendly remarks for being a Mexican-American. If it matters he was born in California. From what I've been told someone interrupted his dinner at some restaurant, asked if he (my friend) is Mexican, and then went on a rant about how his children were denied opportunities because of Affirmative Action. I do not know if said person randomly picked out my friend or just thought my friend looked well off. My friend works as a structural engineer for Southern California Edison for the past several years.

Southern California being rather diverse, I don't think Affirmative Action have ever crossed my mind. I myself am Chinese-American, born in California as well, and I never thought about whether or not I was accepted into my college of choice because of Affirmative Action. My high school grades weren't the best with a GPA of 2.8 or 3.0ish but the school I went into, Cal Poly Pomona, wasn't exactly top end either at the time I applied. I was heavily involved with sports, volunteering events, our music program, and took all the AP and Honor classes I qualified for. At the very least I know the job I have now is more due to a Boy Scouts leader referring me than anything else.

Do you feel the opportunities you've been denied/granted in life has been due to Affirmative Action?

Comments and opinions are appreciated,

Thank you

Part of me was thinking I'm going up against thousands of other Chinese-Americans for the same colleges, Affirmative Action or not, my actions/capabilities better speak louder than my ethnicity.

technically speaking before the nazis actually put it into practice eugenics was a pretty popular idea. IIRC the US had actually experimented with forced sterilization.

As for the topic, no. But there are times when I thought someone else was probably there because of it.

No, but I feel like knowing the right people and being charming during interviews has helped me immensely. The biggest hurdle for me was always getting the call back. I've never had an interview without a job offer.

I never felt or noticed my race having any effect on me in any professional sense, positive or negative. But I'm also kind of naive.

I will say though that my sister has to go by her middle name Marie on her resume if she hopes to get any replies, and she has a Bachelor's.

Bitch you haven't seen it for weeks.

There aren't many people named Albert these days, so I'm good in that department too.

That also reminds me of that scene in Family Guy.

Peter: Your name is Jamal?
Guy: Yeah.
Peter: But... you're white.
Guy: So?
Peter: ..This can't be the first time you've had this conversation.

While I can't quantify how many other opportunities I may have lost due to affirmative action (because it's usually impossible to know the exact reason), I know from talking to a friend who worked in the HR department of a company where I interviewed that I was passed over for diversity reasons. Of course, there have been other times a less-qualified candidate got a job I had interviewed for, but there could be any number of possible alternative explanations including personal recommendations, etc.

tbh, Asians do frequently complain about affirmative action programs because so many Asian students are able to get into good colleges based on their own merits. As such, they sometimes do the same thing as white students and lie about their ethnicity. That said, it's possible that it may advantage lower-performing Asian students applying to less impressive schools.
