eh

i think the fire and brimstone interpretation is a little too easy, and may have all been an allegory for the comparison to how 'great' heaven would be (unity with god vs separation from god)

fear of hell has been an easy way to control people so churches leaning in to that way of viewing the commentary on separation from god after death is understandable

but francis doesnt want control

It'll be interesting to see how Christians react to this.

Specifically how many will be angered at the idea of hell not existing. Even more specifically, why they want that sort of thing to exist.

This pope is a literal heretic and it seems he wants to be loved by everyone more than anything but this seems to be the trend of religion in the West. If he were a true believer in the faith he would push on despite how unpopular it was even though Catholicism has little place in this modernized interconnected techno world and can only exist as the shell it currently is.

It has nothing to do with what they want or don't want. What the Pope is saying is blasphemy and against their own Scripture, doctrine, dogma, and tradition.

What they want doesn't matter it's more about how the Pope is basically spitting on their own belief system. I mean religion isn't really about consensus it's based on actual doctrine.

Personal desire has nothing to do with it and people being angry doesn't mean they WANT hell to exist. Anyone who isn't a moron should be able to see that.

Christianity and Catholicism are not the same thing. They are similar yes, but there are vast differences. One of the big ones being that the pope has nothing to do with Christianity and is a figure head for Catholicism.
The other being that in Catholicism you don't follow the bible word for word as you would in Christianity. Growing up I was always told that they were just stories to help make you a better person, not something to be believed word for word.

While Pope Francis is easily the most Christ-like figure religion has seen in centuries, he is pretty obviously contradicting established dogma here. Hell, even Jesus himself mentioned a place of eternal burning and suffering in his parables, even if the notion of such a place actually existing was and is absurd.

Why shouldn't religions evolve like anything else? It's in their best interests if they want to survive the modern world indefinitely. They can't save souls if they die off.

Maybe an obscure religion that died was the true one and now everyone ever born is already damned because they refused to adapt to trends and no one is alive to show society the way. Good thing the very concept of religion is a joke or we would be screwed.

People follow the word of Jesus because it makes sense and is good. Why should we worry that a religion no one has heard of might be the one true religion? Say you are right and Jesus' word is wrong. Why should we be punished for following Jesus' word?

That being said, Jesus' word (not to mentioned the story of Jesus itself) tells us that while there is good on this earth and that we can bring bring to this earth as humans, there is also evil on this earth that we must be wary of.

Because if you're wrong, and damn not even all Christians can compeltely agree on what God wants, then you might be fucked and your entire life was a lie. And who knows what that true deity thinks about non-believers or what his moral code is? Maybe what some religion deems as an evil spirit is the true god and we'll all suffer for not killing puppies as tribute.

Honestly, it takes a great deal of arrogance to follow a religion as you have to insist it is true and that you will be fine even if it turns out false.

I grew up Baptist with parents from Methodist and Lutheran churches. It's not by any means a majority view.

I think you and Zikten might also be conflating two things. The belief that some of the unique tenants of Catholicism that differentiate it from Protestantism preclude it from being Christianity is not a very accepted belief and is pretty hard to substantiate, as even Martin Luther himself wouldn't claim that Catholics weren't Christian even despite all the flaws he saw in how the church was being run (and the two branched have reconciled much more in the years since then).

Where I normally see this attitude crop up is instead in regards to how "poorly" people who call themselves Catholics are at practicing their faith. While every sect of Christianity has Easter/Christmas Christians, Catholics often seem to bifurcate into very devoted (mass three nights a week, never miss) and extremely undevoted, but still refer to themselves as Catholic because technically they were brought up that way.

No, I'm specifically talking about the doctrine and dogma within the Catholic religion is what many Protestant religions have problems with such as Catholics viewing the Eucharist as the literal body and blood (basically Catholics are technically cannibals) instead of it being symbolic, Protestants believes that only through faith you are saved while Catholics believe that works can also save (so basically Protestants believe even the ignorant can go to hell while Catholics believe even other religions and Atheists can get to heaven as long as they do good deeds), Catholics bowing and praying towards statues (Protestants view this as Idolatry), etc. Not that I agee that Catholics aren't Christian, but I can understand and see why Protestants would view such practices as unChristian like. With that said, as long as you believe in God/Jesus and the Holy Trinity I think one can fit into any Christian denomination.
