what is your reason for following this stupid custom?

1. there is an ignorant belief that tip workers are doing it tough. when the fact is, they willingly sign up for this type of work to exploit ignorant customers. in the end they have a shot at making more than min wage for an unskilled role, provided the customer plays along with the scam.

2. you simply fear looking like you're poor or afraid the staff may sabotage your next meal if you ever return.

3. *strokes ego while thinking to themselves* "I bet i looked good giving such a generous tip to that hopeless bum. not only does the worker realize how insignificant he is, my action surely made every witness moist."

Because I'm not a cheapass. If the tip system wasn't in place food would be way more expensive, then everyone would be bitching how expensive it is to eat out.

Also, punishing the low skill staff by not tipping won't help the problem, it's just another excuse to be a cheapass. It has zero impact on owners. The only way to make a change would be to stop eating at sit down restaurants all together which does hurt the owners wallet.

Where else are they going to make up the loss of profit margins? They would be giving each employee at least a $5 an hour raise which could add up to a 6 figure loss per year if it's a heavily employed restaurant.

I disagree with the system that makes it necessary in order for service staff to get a decent wage, but I still tip because it's socially expected. I would prefer seeing gratuity factored into the cost of my meal automatically - and I'm noticing a few local businesses automatically adding a small fee to the cost of the bill to go directly to the staff. I think it's progress.

He's an idiot and doesn't know what he's talking about. Honestly, if you scrapped tipping most sit down full service restaurants would disappear to the likes of chipotle/Panera and other casual order at the counter places. It would only be present in super high end places which would just become more expensive in order to actually be able to pay a skilled wait staff.

Where do you think the "scam" is? Where do you think money comes from? The owner of the restaurant does not just generate money out of thin air. His or her money comes from the revenue generated from the patrons. He doesn't just have a big bag of cash in the back that he's too greedy to hand out to his employees.

If I order a burger and it's $9 I tip 20% and pay $10.80. If tipping is abolished the price of that burger simply goes up to $10.80 and I pay... $10.80, with less guarantee of good service. A lot of these anti tipping people seem to believe it's a matter of them paying the waiter vs the employer paying the waiter. I don't know how else to explain this. YOU ARE PAYING, either way. If tipping goes away, somebody else isn't picking up the tab. You're still paying it.

what makes you automatically target the employer?

the employee is the one that WILLINGLY signed up for the job. understanding that they can exploit a custom to make more than min wage, which is the alternative for these unskilled workers.

something the ignorant really need to read and re read to get it into their head.

its better to pay a set price than play a guessing game with johnny and suzie entitled. who have varying min tip expectations on different days and work hours.

How is a sit down restaurant going to be able to compete with order at the counter places? If all of a sudden have to more than double their payroll pay(just get to minimum wage) their prices are going to go up. lots of these casual sit down places are already dying off to restaurants like this with their prices where they are.

Restaurants will also not be able to find anyone who wants to work Friday and Saturday night, you know, when they're busiest. Why the hell would someone want to bust their ass on a busy Saturday night when they can make the same money reading a magazine on a slow monday lunch?

And I don't know if you've ever actually been out of the country, but service sucks ass in Europe unless you're in a very nice place that can actually afford to hire staff that doesn't suck.

gee. how does the rest of the world seem to manage just fine. notice its the actual scammers/ex scammers that try to keep the dumb custom going.

there's also the ignorant belief from the scammers that hovering around the customer like a blood sucking mosquito = good service.

protips for being a good waiter
greet customer
offer recommendations ONLY if asked
take order
bring order
DO NOT approach table unless customer gestures for you

doing that warrants min wage. thats all the role is WORTH.

now of a customer feels generous, they can choose to throw the dog a bone. however, not doing so doesn't make them a "dick".

I tip fat because I've worked in restaurants and understand how hard it is to do the job when severely understaffed and most of the customers are dicks and think they're entitled to good service but not entitled to tip.

Plus I understand that customers will foot the bill either way. If they get rid of the tip then food costs just go up because waiters will have to get paid that much more. Someone already said this but I don't get why people think tipping would ever go away without menu costs also going up. It's pretty basic economics unless for some reason you believe any smart business would just eat that loss.

If it was minimum wage and no tips do you know who would sign up for it? People who don't give a shit about making an impression or speedy service because they're not working for tips. So if it were minimum wage not only would food prices go up, a fact you keep denying, but service would be worse on average too.
