They don't give Nobel prizes to theory that hasn't been experimentally confirmed (that's why the Higgs didn't get one until a few years ago, for example), but theory is very much necessary for the advancement of the field (and theory gives direction to experiments, and vice versa). Even something as seemingly without practical implications as general relativity can turn out to be important; it turns out that you actually need to account for it to get accurate GPS, for example.</quote> Right.
