5. Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddys Kong Quest (Shonen_Bat)
![]() This is my favorite 2-D platformer ever (My second favorite may surprise people even more, but nobody nominated it!). I love the look, feel, and sound of Donkey Kong Country 2. The various locations in this game are really good (The pirate theme is very cool), with an excellent soundtrack to enhance it. Diddy and Dixie are a great team, and they give you new teammate abilities to help you take out enemies you otherwise couldn't defeat and to reach bonus areas. Dixie's ponytail whirl is ridiculously good. It enables her to cover large distances while slowing your descent to make the platforming easier and is invaluable during certain boss fights, particularly the two duels against Kaptain K. Rool. Speaking of which, I love both of those fights. It's not a simple "jump on his head" or "throw something at him," but K. Rool throws wave after wave after wave of various obstacles in different patterns. One of the great thrills of this game is being able to defeat him without taking a hit, which I haven't been able to pull off with Diddy to this day. Hopefully, I will eventually accomplish that someday! Donkey Kong Country 2 has masterful level design. It's an offshoot of Sonic's momentum-based platforming, although it uses enemy and item placement instead of speed to achieve it. It's one of those games where you want to replay the levels just to try to get through them more smoothly, and if you do it just right, you can roll through the level moving from one setpiece to the next. One of the biggest appeals of Donkey Kong Country 2 is finding all its secrets, whether it's the bonus rooms or the Hero Coins, which might be the single best collectible ever. They're strategically placed in each level, and many of them force you to think outside the box, thoroughly explore, and be swift to get them. Plus, there's the fact that Cranky Kong spends the entire game talking smack about you, so you're extra motivated to get them all so you can shove it in his face (as well as shove Mario, Link, and Yoshi off of the award pedestal). Then there's the Lost World, which you gain access to little by little as you earn Kremcoins from the bonus stages, and some of those stages can be pretty rough but satisfying to beat, especially Animal Antics. Perhaps one of the coolest new gameplay touches in Donkey Kong Country 2 is the fact that now you can transform into the animal buddies, so they can revolve entire levels around their particular set of skills. It just expanded all that they could do with the game in terms of level design. Those animal stages can be kind of hit or miss sometimes, but they can be really fun when they get it right, too. This game is just a sheer joy to play, and I never get tired of it. It's a perfect combination of style and substance. Bonus Question: What is your favorite 2-D platformer? Third straight exact hit for AxemRedRanger, and NBIceman got it right, too! Bunch of people whiffed on this one though! --- ... Copied to Clipboard!

4. Super Mario Galaxy (Shonen_Bat)
![]() I'm kind of glad both Super Mario Galaxy games didn't get nominated here because they're essentially tied at this spot for me. I probably favor the sequel a little bit over the original, but I just love the concept of these games. I really enjoy space and interstellar travel as the theme for them, and it's just a blast (sometimes literally) flying all over the place and messing around with all the crazy gravity gimmicks. The camera work and presentation during some of the setpieces where Mario is flying through the air are excellent, like in Melty Molten Galaxy where Mario zooms out of the volcano as it erupts behind him. I'm not a huge fan of motion controls overall, but Super Mario Galaxy managed to make them feel good most of the time (with a couple of notable exceptions). While I enjoy Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Sunshine had its moments, I was glad that Super Mario Galaxy brought the mainline series back to being more of a traditional platformer instead of being a big open world type game. Now the individual worlds can still be pretty large, but there's more of a focus on precision jumps and using the elements around you to maneuver through the stage. Some of those elements suck, like the rolling ball, which is the absolute worst thing in the game because of the motion controls, but for the most part, it handles really smoothly. I loved the Purple Comets because they would give you a special challenge, and some of them could be pretty tough, like doing a run through a level or a boss fight without taking a hit or beating a Cosmic Mario in a race. Super Mario Galaxy has a lot of worlds in it, with some of my personal favorites being Melty Molten, Battlerock, Dreadnought, Buoy Base, and Gusty Garden. I think the boss levels are really fun, too. The final one is super good, and I love the final showdown with Bowser here. The bosses aren't very hard, but it's satisfying just slapping him around. Plus, the music really helps it feel epic. Both Super Mario Galaxy games have outstanding soundtracks. I love orchestral sound because it can make stuff feel grandiose. I'm big on atmosphere and appropriate music can go a long way toward establishing it, and they nail it here. Perhaps the thing that puts Super Mario Galaxy over the top is simply this: Playable Luigi. Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Sunshine jilted the poor guy, and even Super Mario Odyssey relegated him to an alternate costume for Mario, but both Super Mario Galaxy games let him have his time in the spotlight. He even handles differently than Mario, since he can jump higher but has worse traction, similar to how he controlled in Super Mario Bros. 2. Also, the Cosmic Luigi races might be the hardest part of the game because he doesn't mess around. Unlike Cosmic Mario, he actively aims for the shortest routes, so you have very little leeway to screw up. Also, I like that Super Mario Galaxy ships Luigi/Rosalina because the dude just needs to leave Daisy in the dust! Bonus Question: What is your favorite 3-D platformer? Thanks to AxemRedRanger attempting to game the system, he has his fourth straight exact hit. Some people were way off on this one. --- ... Copied to Clipboard!
