Keep in mind, most people who are in hiring positions haven't applied for a job with a new company in fifteen years.

I literally had this conversation with my boss last month:

"Blah blah blah career path blah blah"
Boss: So I'm hearing you say you're pretty content where you are.
DevsBro: Not really.
Boss: Ok, so where would you want to be?
DevsBro: Well, my favorite thing I studied in college was Computer Architecture, but we don't really do that at this company.
Boss: So like, you're six years into your career and just now thinking about this?
(DevsBro: YOU KNOW NOTHING!!!)
DevsBro: Well, when you find yourself in a line going all the way around a four-block building for admission to a job fair, things like what you want to do go out the window pretty quickly.

They still think applicants have bargaining power. They're the Bruce Wayne to our Carmine Falcone. They think because their pension got cut they know about the ugly side of employment but they don't.

boomer logic is so absurd. i hear crap like this too from my coworkers. it's crazy how out of touch people are, and a lot of times they act like the way they want things to be is how it actually is

my friend is in computer science and doesn't even have a degree and he negotiated his salary up 25% and got a 10k bonus on top of that

I work in nonprofits and I've also negotiated my salary

it's really common after you get to a certain point in your career...

i bet your friend in computer science will not have a good time if he tried to switch companies, since like 3/4ths of jobs out there will not even glance at his resume if he doesnt at least have a BA.

bargaining power is not just negotiating salary, it's having some sort of power in the hiring process rather than having to bend over backwards to get even the most basic positions

he is getting his BA, my point is that he already has the ability to negotiate his desired compensation, which is what I thought this topic was about

what other kind of power do you want in your negotiations? I've also negotiated about my schedule, time off, etc

I mean it happens bro, I realize not everyone can and not every position

Depends on how much experience he has, which is far more valuable in the IT/CS world than education. Not having a Bachelors only hurts his chances for a management position really.

It really is annoying.

My "desired" salary is seven trillion dollars a year. Since we're probably paid in arrears, I'll work for two weeks, take that first paycheck, and retire.

It's fucked because obviously I want to make more than I make now, but if I blow up some huge number, they'll laugh me out the door, but if I ask too low, then I might be screwing myself and moving companies for pennies more.

Is this legit the best thing to do? I always put an amount down because I really don't want them wasting my time if the job pays far below what I'm looking for.

I just had (what I think to be) a decent idea

Fill the box with gibberish failed coding text, like when a website has failed ascii and so it fills with weird gibberish like "&A0233" or what the fuck ever. Make it look like a coding error.

Then if they bring it up, you can at least trigger a conversation about it and speak in person with reasoning to support yourself, as opposed to just putting in a number that they might just disregard right off the bat.

But many times people don't look at those things, it is computers. The computer might bump you out of the system for that.
