VOX - Russia hacked the Olympics and tried to make it look like North Korea did it

Russian military spies hacked hundreds of computers at the 2018 Olympic Games in South Korea and tried to make it look like North Korea was the culprit, according to a new report. It is likely retaliation against the International Olympic Committee (IOC) for banning the Russian team from Olympics because of a widespread doping scheme it used to cheat in previous competitions.

The Washington Posts Ellen Nakashima reported on Saturday evening that the GRU, Russias military intelligence agency, accessed as many as 300 Olympics-related computers earlier this month, according to two US officials. To cover their tracks, and to pin any suspicions on North Korea, the hackers used North Korean IP addresses, among other tactics.

Officials in Pyeongchang had already acknowledged that the Winter Games were hit by a cyber attack during the February 9 opening ceremonies but hadnt said who did it. That night, there were disruptions on the internet, broadcast systems, and the Olympics websites. Per the Post, many attendees werent able to print their tickets for the event, which left seats empty.

My first thought is China would not be happy about destabilization on its border, plus both China and the U.S. would almost certainly get drawn into that war and that could only be good for Russia.

Kind of a history/religion question, but have we had anybody on a Presidential ticket as religiously driven as Mike Pence in recent years? Just people nominated to be President and VP, not necessarily counting lesser candidates like Rick Santorum but if there's somebody noteworthy there that's cool too.

I feel confident we have, and my first guess running backwards in our timeline is Jimmy Carter...but I don't actually know that kind of religious history well (or history in general, rabble rabble).

Pior to the Reagan/Carter election the evangelicals really sort of stayed out of politics for the most part, occasional forays from Billy Graham notwithstanding. Its sort of ironic and notable that the evangelicals went to Reagan because Carter was the actual Christian of the two.

Bush/Dole/Bush all tried to appeal to them but youre right in that they didnt dress EVERYTHING in evangelical language the way Pence does (though W was at least a born-again himself).

Before Carter though? You really have to go all the way back to McKinley and William Jennings Bryan to get people who spoke the way Reagan/Carter/Pence did and do.

As a Christian i appreciate someone having what i consider to be Christian values.

But I do not think those values should be affecting policies in any significant ways.

Voting against drugs because you believe they have harmful impacts? Great.

Voting against drugs because the bible says not to imbibe any substances that would affect your state of mind? Not okay.

Voting to allow religious displays at schools (eg 10 commandments) because you think religious texts from ANY religion should be able to be displayed? Great.

Voting to allow religious texts of only one specific religion to be displayed because that one is your favorite? Not okay.

You can support legislation that corresponds with religious values, but it should be done because they are legitimate non-religious reasons to support them. And in many cases there are corroborating reasons but too often those get ignored and the line between church and state isv ever blurred.

Thanks Eddv!

I think of Dubya as pretty high on the list since he had that comment about us going to war because he spoke with God about it. He also spoke out against Muslim discrimination right after 9/11 though, so at least he wasn't only pro-Christian with religion...plus he didn't have a labeling catchphrase like like Pence's Christian/conservative/Republican bit.

James Madison was also very religious, and appropriated funds for bible distribution and congressional chaplains. Oddly later in life he apparently reversed his position and thought that paid chaplains and president-led prayers were unconstitutional.

Sometimes I wonder when/if we'll ever have a non-Christian President, let alone an openly atheist president.

Trump has enough Christian advisers that he doesn't qualify as 'non-christian'. I'm sure he's a big fan of the prosperity gospel. Especially since Paula White is one of his advisers.

Now you could say he doesn't act Christian I suppose, though that borders the no-true-scotsman territory. His religion is more of an act than anything probably, but on the other hand I'd say he probably DOES believe. If only because the prosperity gospel likely feeds his ego. I mean the idea that an all powerful being favors him? Yeah, that's probably in his wheelhouse.

Both Adams was a unitarian, and Jefferson and Washington didn't openly practice any sort of christianity.

Between Coolidge and Nixon we only had one particularly religious president and it was JFK. They were all christians but it wasn't really a part of their public persona. Hell, it only was for Kennedy because it helped him win the northeast and midwest irish populations.

Can you just imagine if Obama did that though? Like just for a moment think about the Republican response if Obama asked for donations to his campaign using photos of Sandy Hook victims. I mean if he did that, I'd be outraged. I can only imagine how Republicans would react.

TALKING POINTS MEMO - Data Clashes With Emotion As CPAC Immigration Panel Goes Off The Rails

Struggling to be heard over the loud applause that ensued, Bier responded, If you look at the data, the people committing crimes are overwhelmingly native-born Americans. So if you want to talk about the effect of immigrants on the crime rate, they actually lower the crime rate, resulting in a safer society. Obviously there are some immigrants who do commit crimes, just like there were some who committed crimes back when the Irish were the ones coming in.

Oh, Im Irish, dont you talk about the Irish, an older woman angrily called out.

Federal Court rules against Justice Department, saying that Discrimination against LGBT is NOT okay by current laws. Of course, our 'pro-lgbt president' and his administration argued that it's legal to discriminate against LGBT people, and have zero interest in making a law that makes it illegal. I'm sure shortly we'll be hearing about 'judicial tyranny' from the anti-lgbt crowd who think it's okay to discriminate (but cry when stores don't say Merry Christmas)

Donald's pretty sick-minded to build himself up as a hero while these professionals unfortunately had their fears be costly. This is one of those times we could honor the officers proven to be brave enough to follow through at this kind of danger, but instead Donald found a few people hard to defend so suddenly the draft dodger's making himself into Rambo. It's gross behavior.

Trump's got an idea to fix all this: A ratings system for games... and movies.

Apparently he thinks the ratings system is only for sexual content.

"Like Call of Duty. I hear you can hook up with prostitutes! Like there's this hot coffee thing in it, and you literally have sex with a prostitute. Now me, I would never hook up with a prostitute. In a video game. I have in real life, but never in a video game. I don't even play video games. I've got more important things to do. #MAGA"

-yeah Page did X and Y, but trump didn't know about that! He never would have worked with him if he knew.

-yeah manafort did X and Y... But trump didn't know about that!! No way!

-yeah gates/flynn/trumpjr/kushner/etc did X and Y, but trump had no knowledge of their unsavory dealings.

The only "innocent trump" is a trump that has managed to be blind to the wrongdoings of sn absurd number of his associates. If you are somehow still trump loyal despite the wealth of reasons not to be then that starts with the perceived guilt of people like Carter Page.
