As in, remakes that retained core gameplay/story/atmosphere elements of the games they are based on while therefore making the originals completely worthless in comparison.

I'm not sure if something like the latest DOOM game counts (I haven't played it), but it would have to have the same general level design, etc. for me to say it "replaces" the original.

It really isn't. It's just the same story retold, but the gameplay and levels aren't close enough to count as a remake.

I think it's a hard question to answer because some people are elitist shitholes that will nitpick the remakes and claim the originals are better
I have seen a pretty long post about why Nightmare in Dreamland was a bad remake because of some silly stuff, can't find it but I found one picture there was in that post-

Basically complaining that the platforms in the remake are floating and not part of the mountain, and stuff like that

Then you have people prefering the original Red Blue of Fire Red Leaf Green because they want to have Missingno and other glitches, seriously

And then you have people preferring the original Majora's Mask because the remake doesn't have rainbow staircase

Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia is pretty unarguably better than the original Gaiden.
Final Fantasy 4 DS, kinda. It's a bit more arguable than the above though.

Monkey Island 2: LeChuck's Revenge Special Edition. The underlying code is identical, they've just added voice acting (good), a new interface (bad) and modern graphics (ehh...). Hit the Classic button and you've got the game as it was in the DOS era, but with voice acting! The same but better.

Sadly, the SE of the first Monkey Island disables voices when you go into classic mode, but there's a mod to rip all the voice files from it and add them to an old DOS copy of SoMI which you can then run through ScummVM.

Fire red and leafgreens flaws go way beyond "no missingno" the game itself is front crammed with tutorials, the gameplay is slower, and despite the bevy of new pokemon released at that point, the game strictly locks all but the original 150. Really the only "pro" they offer is better looking sprites.

No remake makes the original completely worthless unless they're very similar.

You basically listed two games that are completely different experiences from their remakes. Especially Castlevania 1 and 4. Might as well say Twin Snakes overwrites the original.

I'd argue Metroid doesn't fit this at all, but even more so Castlevania 1 is better than 4. Better graphics and more movement control doesn't mean your game is designed better.

Like Zero Mission doesn't even retain the feel of Metroid 1 to me at all either. It's so much more guided it just invokes Fusion and Super design more than the original.

I mean, I understand your intentions with the topic. Just picking at the definition because it's the opposite of what you said. What ties these good answers together is that they don't replace the original at all and offer completely new modern experiences (for their time anyway).

Edit: REmake is probably the singular example. I keep thinking in 2D for whatever reason.

Doesn't really matter what you've heard about Super Castlevania 4 because it isn't even a remake. It has the same story as the original but that's it. None of the levels besides a small segment of the intro stage are the same at all.
