20. Guren no Yumiya
Attack on Titan
GavsEvans (1/5)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XMXgHfHxKVM" data-time="

Pretty much iconic at this point, but not without good reason! The hard rock vocals bounce off the dramatic orchestra pretty much perfectly. It's an incredibly unique song that fits the show well, and it's a shame the other OPs are pretty bad.

19. Tsukiakari
Darker Than Black
Turnsniper (2/5)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2bAPhU9YSIE" data-time="

Damn good vocals with a really good chorus. It's a lot of fun to listen to! Especially the bits just after the two minute mark.

18. Puzzle
Welcome to the NHK!
pyresword (1/5)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hHs5AjAvFoA" data-time="

Gotta love that trumpet and the dual vocalists! There's a good allusion to be made about how the vocalists represent the characters in the show, but even on it's own, this is a wonderful song. I'd probably actually enjoy the full version more, though I haven't heard it yet.

17. Deep in Abyss
Made in Abyss
Eerieka (1/5)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EJYKsY0Vcts" data-time="

This may have been my favorite 2017 OP? I'd have to dig through my AotY votes to find out, and that's too much work. This song sounds pretty damn adventurous. That whimsical piano and the fast drums do so much here. It's damn catchy all the way through, as well.

16. MY MaiTONIGHT
Love Live! Sunshine!!
WhiteLens (2/5)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dy0igUHs2J4" data-time="

Absolutely disgusted with myself. I'm really into songs with oriental influence. Combine that with something really poppy and I guess even these horribly structured idol songs can sound outstanding. Don't get me wrong, I still hate parts of this, but it's more of a hatred toward the fact that it should be better than it is. It's a damn fine song regardless. I mean, now that I think about it, the melody is basically just a faster Reset from Okami... Yeah, this makes more sense now...

15. Knew Day
Hai to Gensou no Grimgar
lefty (2/5)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SsZ1UkTugeM" data-time="

Grimgar is a severely underappreciated show that will likely never get a second season. Hell, I completely forgot it existed until this was nominated! The violin in this is insane. The melody is beautiful and accompanied by some great vocals.

14. Eau de Vie
Shiki
FL81 (1/5)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wA5CJrla26s" data-time="

This song's really damn cool for a clearly atmospheric track. The constant melody is great, and the way it builds on itself sounds fantastic. Thankfully, it also ends before it has the chance to get dull!

13. Inside Identity
Chuunibyou Demo Koi ga Shitai!
Kokoro (1/5)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pZ_lcMNvCZk" data-time="

I hated chuu2, but god this song rocks. The constant wailing guitar in the background is great, and the occasional synth additions are pretty much perfect. It never lets up on the excitement, staying fun constantly.

12. The Battle of Concepts
Haikyuu!!
Koala (3/5)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IpfJrqxsyJ0" data-time="

This is some top tier hype music that sounds straight out of Gust's best work. The guitar is great and the violin is fantastic. It's constantly epic and fun.

11. M17
Kara no Kyoukai 2
lefty (1/5)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0vWzIqra0Hg" data-time="

I just got done trolling the anime topic about how I'm not a huge fan and massively overplaying my disdain a few hours ago. But hey, the music is never something I'll hate on. This track is fantastic. It's emotional, with some excellent use of each instrument.

10. This Illusion
Fate/stay Night: Unlimited Blade Works
Reg (3/5)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zc6G2yozzSg" data-time="

God, remember when LiSA was the hot vocalist for these bombastic opening themes, rather than the talentless shits they're buying out now? Those were the days. I don't remember the last time I heard her in anything new, and a quick MAL check shows she's been relegated to mostly ending themes lately, which is a damn shame. Anyway, I made a joke about how I wasn't bitter at the time of listening to Reg's noms, and it was all well and funny, but also maybe a bit too true in this case. Not saying this is some outrageous over-ranking, as I still think it's fantastic, and the rest of the top 10 checks out, but yeah, this probably should've been dropped a bit. STILL! LiSA is one of the better singers to hit the kind of success where I'm able to pick out who's singing theme songs. Most of them are bad because the industry regurgitates soulless garbage when they need something to feel epic, but LiSa's work always feel pretty heartfelt. She has wonderful range, and uses that talent to it's fullest here. The main melody is typical bombastic stock music, but LiSa adds so much to the song. I wouldn't call myself a fanboy since I haven't really looked into anything she's done outside of themes, but dammit, she needs more work. She literally got dropped from SAO and replaced by one of the shittiest vocalists I've ever heard, and, what do you know, the show basically started sucking once that happened. At least I think.

9. Roundabout
JoJo's Bizarre Adventure
Reg (2/5)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Tdu4uKSZ3M" data-time="

It's a damn shame this song became a meme. Memes blow. Yes doesn't. They're probably my favorite prog rock band (Not really that huge of a feat though), and Roundabout is their magnum opus. That bass is fucking insane, and the constant progression is always fun to listen to. I do think it overstays it's welcome a bit too long, but I don't ever dislike it. It's a damn fine song.

8. Jet Set Run
My Hero Academia
Koala (2/5)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U_FDru9B670" data-time="

Oh ya, more epic shounen battle jams. This one uses a mixture of hard rock and orchestra as well. The orchestra has a much higher focus here, however, as the guitar backs the brass and strings more rhythmically. It feels very empowering overall, staying consistent throughout, never becoming overbearing or slow. Don't actually remember where this plays in the show, so I am sad.

7. Hikari Are
Haikyuu
Reg (1/5)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dfMb37KGqdE" data-time="

Damn, any song that starts with "Woah oh-oh-oh etc." raises a massive red flag for me. Usually it's just a bunch of shitty pop rockers who die out once they stop being hot. But hey, Hikari Are changes tunes pretty damn quickly. It's still pop rock and all, but it has a very unique vocalist, capable of sounding smooth most of the time, but hitting those high notes so damn finely. Best part is when it brings back the woah oh oh-ing in a fashion that sounds pretty damn cool, making me eat my own shoe. I think the main thing about this song is just how damn good the chorus is, and they fucking know it. They pound that shit at you for such a large portion of the song, and it just never lets up. Great anthemic track, would totally have gotten boners to it in middle school.

6. Orange Mint
Tsukimonogatari
TRE (1/5)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yvit1jnercw" data-time="

At first, I had this as my #1, thinking that it wasn't even close once the list finished. Then I just decided to stop being a bitch and focus on my top 10 a bit more, relistening and writing more thoughtfully and I kinda realized, "You know, this isn't as good as some of this other junk."

I have expressed my love for Orange Mint a few times with the anime crowd, though I'm not sure how much it sticks because most people seem to think it's one of the worst Monogatari OPs, and I'm not about that toxic discussion, especially with something as subjective as music. My opinion that they basically composed the perfect synthpop song still stands. The 90-second version would've gotten a 10 rating and nothing would've challenged it. Pretty much everything about the verses and chorus strike me sharply, wrapped into this beautiful composition without flaw. From the synth to the little avant-garde intricacies of the rhythm to the monotone singer that still manages to show more emotion in her voice than basically every one of those dumb singers they sign on for inoffensive "epic" opening themes, to, well, you get the idea. It's amazing, to say the least, that a song manages to tick with me in such a way without any real emotional connection, as I was pretty turned off by the series at this point.

But, you see, Monogatari originals tend to get a bit... tricky once you start analyzing the full versions. And that's really for one reason in literally every one of them. The fucking bridge. They're always terrible, killing the entire pacing of the song and providing extremely flat, cringy, and uninspired "twists" to songs that are otherwise known for being unique and creative. I don't think anyone likes every Monogatari OP out there, but dammit, nobody can deny that they all sound unique and at the very least fun. But does anyone actually like these bridges? Seriously, they just come in to muck up my overall opinion of a song, then they leave and the song goes back to being fun.

I kept dropping Orange Mint place by place, but I'm pretty comfortable with it right here. Maybe I'm more forgiving of the bad section on another day, but dammit, I can't reward the people behind these compositions with a #1 spot, and I know they're reading this.

5. unravel
Tokyo Ghoul
Nio (1/5)
https://soundcloud.com/zolomolo1117/unravel-tk-from-long-tosite-sigure

Another song that I keptg having to drop, but this one more because I just wasn't feeling it as much as others recently. Maybe a week from now this changes, but the current top 2 have been switched, like, 10 times today, so it might be more accurate to say there's a chance unravel is #1 an hour from now. ANYWAY, there are some people who will have you believe that TK from Long Tosite Sigure is a bad singer. These people are wrong, and probably also think What's Up People was too low on my list. He has a damn beautiful voice, capable of bringing out some of the rawest emotion I think I've ever heard in a singer. You got nerds like Jeff Mangum who everyone thinks is the best at this but fuck no. It's TK from Digimon Digital Monsters. Every second of this song is a whirlwind of emotion, and he's able to dip in and out of these quieter bits into the blaring chaos so damn smoothly. Anyone who's watched Tokyo Ghoul can tell you how brilliant the OP is, even if they don't like the song, and that's because the art direction there perfectly understood what TKO from the 20/20 Experience was trying to create with his voice alone, and maybe the lyrics too, but I don't get Japanese. You can't have the visuals work without the song, and that's objective fact, so you haters just got got. Anyway, this is a damn fine piece, and yes, I do think that calling yourself TK from Long Tosite Sigure is stupid, thanks for asking.

4. Secret Base - 10 Years After Ver.
AnoHana
Turnsniper (1/5)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ndH6UqA0QSo" data-time="

You know, AnoHana had some pretty dumb writing, unlikeable characters, and sometimes didn't really make logical sense.

But it was also the best drama ever created. And fucking HELL if it didn't make you suffer from hardcore feels, you either never grew apart from your friends, or you never had any to begin with. And this song immediately hits my brain when I'm thinking about the show. I try to separate the show from the song in these, but I'll admit there's always bias, especially when a show that good contains a song this good. It's bittersweet, yet uplifting melody is accompanied by beautiful vocals. Honestly, doing this write-up brought a tear to my eyes, because I never really think about why I love a song until I'm writing about it. This is really why I did these in the first place, because while music has never played much of a role in my personal life, it has the power to evoke the strongest feelings out of me. Now I'm regretting skipping all of the intricacies that came with these topics, and thoughtlessly blazing through the middle section. Yeah, I made a dumb mistake, but, hopefully, like the show, you guys will forgive me, right? :(

3. Fruits Candy
Cardcaptor Sakura
Raka (1/5)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=63UceXudIhY" data-time="

I don't give a FUCK

2.

Okay but seriously, call it nostalgia or whatever, but I completely forgot about this song. It was basically like rediscovering an episode of a cartoon you loved as a kid, and suddenly these joyous memories come flooding in. I think I've made it known that Cardcaptors was the first anime I actually watched from start to finish, even if it wasn't really what pulled me into the medium. This song comes in with this catchy ass diddy about eating candy, and my 13-year old ass is laughing at how cheesy it is and how it kinda sounds like she's saying "Kamikaze Jelly Bean" in that one part. But once I heard that first second, the entire song and my memories of it came flooding back. And despite all that, it's pretty damn close to perfection as far as feel-good pop garbage goes. You get the chorus presented immediately to hook you, then a more tepid slow section to settle you down, only to ratchet it up again with the same chorus that hooks you to begin with. It does all of this in 69 (hot) seconds, when so many other songs can barely figure out how to cram shit in within 90. And when it's so consumable and complete as is, you start to notice all the little touches that go into it, like how there's this bit of reverb in the third line of the chorus, and the song is basically shit without it. So thank you Raka, for bringing this song back into my life. A god damn classic, and fuck you if you think it's lame because it totally is and I don't need you to tell me.

2. Natsu Matsuri
ReLIFE
WhiteLens (1/5)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uY8bHooOVdM" data-time="

Soooo damn good. Starts with this slow, almost ominous intro, then this guitar kicks in out of nowhere and the song just doesn't let up. You get that wall of noise dipping in and out of the song, the heavy oriental influence on the melody and within the backing drums, the unpolished but emotional vocals, really it's a song with tons of neat quirks that all happen to be to my liking. I am a bit ashamed of myself, as I don't remember this even playing in ReLIFE, which is made even worse because I binged it in a day, which I rarely ever do. I wish momre shows like that existed... Anyway, this was a pretty tough decision, and it feels weird to put a song that struck so many chords with me at #2, but here we are...

1. Requiem
Dusk Maiden of Amnesia
Koala (1/5)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JhH4zIV0-Zs" data-time="

So yeah, I've gone on and on about my favorites having some wide range of instrumentation, poppy melodies, usually some synth, etc. But the best song I heard in this batch only uses a piano and a vocalist, and I' honestly surprised I put it up this high. It just goes to show that someties simplicity is what brings the most out of a song, especially when the parts are pretty much perfect. The piano creates a truly haunting, beautiful elody, and the vocalist.... Well, let's just say this ight actually be the best vocal performance I've heard. Like, bar none. Her range is incredible, and she doesn't fret away from those high notes that should break her voice, but dammit, it's always so smooth. Honestly, what put this over the edge in the end, is that I a now actively searching for a way to view this show simply after hearing the song, which rarely happens for me, and considering how difficult it is for me to spontaneously watch an anime on my shitty 90s Internet, that's a bit of a feat. I think Requiem (ha) for a Dream might be the only other piece of media I've wanted to check out solely because I heard a song from it, and Lux Aeterna was my favorite song OF ALL TIME for a while. Requiem is just that damn good. Today alone, I've probably spent over an hour just listening, and absorbing every bit of it. I doubt this'll be a super popular choice, because I'm guessing it relies a bit on context, but hell, I love everything about it, and I can't see myself changing this for at least another 30 minutes.

The ReLIFE OVAs?

I'd guess they're going to have to structure it in some way to accommodate the people who've only seen the anime, but there's no way it's humanly possible to fit everything that the manga hasn't covered into four episodes unless the OVAs are like at least an hour apiece. A lot of content is going to have to get cut.

ANYWAY I know I said earlier that I wasn't feeling it this year, but I'm just gonna provide a bit more context.

I was initially going to forego the project this time around, but I got the idea to rank user-nominated anime, which sounded pretty fun. I ultimately backed out of that because I figured it'd just be b8anime dudes and they probably get enough of my show thoughts in the topics. But I had already gotten the ranking blood flowing, and just threw this up without actually thinking about whether or not I really wanted to do it. Of course, we got more nominations this year than either of the previous ones, so I was kinda locked into it. So I wasn't super into this from the beginning, and it probably showed through my dickish write-ups. Having to deal with my shitty Internet sometimes refusing to load songs was basically the straw that broke the camel's back. It made the tedious part of the list, the big middle section with all the songs that I don't really care about, feel even more tedious, and at that point, I wasn't really enjoying it. So I blazed through the list up to the top 10, because I actually felt I had stuff to say about most of these, rather than simply calling it good because who wants to read a ton of negative write-ups? The write-ups I did tonight were ones I actually had a lot of fun with, so I guess that's the silver lining? I doubt I'll do this next year.

Anyway, if you guys actually are interested in a user-nominated anime ranking, feel free to let me know, as I'm still interested and this seemed like a good place to shoehorn it in. And make sure to check out Kokoro's rankings later, even if you didn't nominate anything! He's a bit slower than I am, but he also puts a lot more effort into it.

I would be interested in an anime ranking but I'm also a b8anime dude so you probably weren't wondering about me!

Anyway, I enjoyed following along even if my nominations did poorly. I'll listen to the top ten when I get home from work and see if they're really better than the Watamote ED.

Is it even possible to do a anime rankings list? A lot of people would nominate animes you never saw and there's no way you have time to slog through all of them. Unless you limit noms to those you have completed.

He could rank the ones he hasn't seen by how interesting they sound based off a synopsis or something.

I'd just tell people to nominate something else. That's what Leonhart did with games, and his topic turned out great.

Besides, I have a MAL account, even if the scores are all there...

Well I do know you watch a lot but wasn't expecting 400+ anime. Would certainly be interesting if you do rank anime next time.

I dunno if I'd follow a rankings topic that closely since I've watched comparatively little anime to a lot of people here but I'd at least nominate stuff and see how low it finished

Hmm, maybe I should do some sort of ranking topic sometime. Leonhart's games topic was pretty cool.

Speaking of the ReLIFE manga, it literally just finished, so if you want to get into it, now's the perfect time! I'd recommend reading it either way because the anime moves at breakneck speed. It covers 5 volumes of the manga in 13 episodes (and does a fine job of it all things considered), but the manga lets the characters breathe a bit more. I liked Chizuru a lot after watching the anime, but she's legitimately one of my favorite female characters after reading the manga.
