Forgot to mention - Tyler J (Cleanprincegaming on Youtube) has been doing a bunch of interesting analysis videos on various games and the backstory behind their development and marketing. It's pretty good if you're actually into that sort of thing.

no... I appreciate what he does, but he's a little *too* obsessed with focusing on problems in the game industry. like, ok, there are problems, maybe there are a lot of problems, but where's the good stuff?

To be fair, he does talk about games he likes, just less so in his actual Jimquisition episodes and more in other videos on his channel.

But honestly, negative criticism is almost more important and necessary than positive criticism. Because when an awesome game comes out that tons of people love, they're going to blast that shit across the entire Internet in the desperate hope that they can evangelize everyone to love their particular favorite baby as much as they do (even if that sort of hype tends to die down over time). But having someone call out industry bullshit (and occasionally pre-emptively warn potential buyers that a game is going to have those sorts of anti-consumer practices in a game and detract from the overall experience) is pretty invaluable, because most people DON'T do it, and most publishers have a vested interest in silencing that sort of dissent.

I've been steered away from buying games I would otherwise have wasted money on (like Shadow of War) by negative Internet reaction, and I'm very happy it happened. Whereas I almost tune people crowing about how awesome [insert current flavor of the month game here] is because people always seem to be far more ready to heap praise on games that barely deserve it than they are to be critical of games that have terminal problems.

I don't understand how people like that insufferable lard.

Because he's right 90% of the time.

And because a lot of his persona is pretty clearly a deliberate performance. In the same way the Redlettermedia Star Wars prequel reviews are presented by a "character" and not as a serious critical film review (that everyone would have found dry and boring - and certainly wouldn't have constantly forwarded to friends until it pretty much became memetic). In the oversaturated world of Youtube videos, you pretty much have to be an over-the-top character to get enough attention to grow out of being a niche.

And honestly, playing a ridiculous cartoonish villain character is still vastly preferable to the usual immature overreacting shouting manbabies that flood so many popular gaming channels (and Twitch streamers). Just because most YouTube videos are either 12 years old or have the emotional maturity of the same doesn't mean every host or performer should come across like a sixth grader with terminal ADHD.

Don't you only care about the story in games? Dynasty Warriors 9 is a broken ass mess with the best narrative in the series. You'll love it.

As the narrative is entirely cribbed from Romance of the Three Kingdoms (which I've read), run through a slurry of poor adaption and even shittier voice acting, I'm going to have to pass.

Also, the fact that you felt like making that statement at all indicates to me that you have an almost pathological misunderstanding of what I actually mean when I say narrative is crucial in games. Which I'd say makes about 97% of your post entirely wrong.

i know some people who say that they prefer avoiding all reviews out of their mind and playing the game or watching the movie unbiased. and they usually end up liking it. even dragon ball fucking gt
ill tell you what, it's a stupid fucking mindset and these people who don't like viewing things with a critical eye are the problem.

Why is that? Personally, I don't normally watch gaming news because it's kinda boring. And I'd rather watch gameplay(not gamig news, per se) by people I like. But why is it bad for people to play a game or watch a movie without spiking anything?

The extent to which it's a deliberate performance doesn't necessarily diminish the criticism of said performance. Sasha Baron-Cohen's Borat is just a character, after all, and generally irritating. More broadly, people put on over-the-top characters and other gimmicks *because* they lack substance... and, for that matter, most of the personas and gimmicks used today ran their course ages ago.
